Am I the only one who doesn’t want to watch stuff like this, I feel like when they show 20 min of gameplay and explain all the systems it kinda hurts the experience when you first play it

For games I am interested in I might not watch the whole thing, but I will check out a few minutes at least just to get a feel for it. I still want know if the game looks like it's fun or that it has the bones to be good. Otherwise, going in blind to a game can be a huge mistake.

Take Redfall for instance. Made by a good studio who made good games. On its face it should have been a great launch just like everything else they put out. However, I watched the gameplay reveals and never really felt too confident about it as a game. I didn't think it would be the disaster it became, but it raised some red flags for me.

Felt the same way about Starfield. On paper it looked super promising and it's made by this legendary studio, but then you see the deep dives and it's just kind of meh? Like this is the most hyped game since GTA 6 thats coming out?

So sometimes it's warranted to watch bits of these videos. Sucker Punch is one of the best devs out there, but you just never know sometimes.

I like to know what I’m getting into. It’s like them saying “here’s my game and why you should get it”. Too many times I’ve bought a game blind and it was trash

I think it’s actually great that they do this. But I wouldn’t watch this for all games yes. Just like I don’t watch trailers for movies. I’m not going to check out a gameplay video for DS2 for example.

But if you have no idea what you’re getting into, it’s only a plus that this is available online for people who do want to watch it.

Yeah if anything I prefer listening to a preview through audio on a podcast or something. I prefer to not watch any marketing before playing but by being online I’m bound to see some things

O-Mesmerine

then don’t watch it. no one is forcing you to. a huge team spent 5 years and god knows how many millions of $dollars making it, of course they’re going to market it the fuck out of it

Marketing and spoilers are two different things

Yes, you're the only one in the world who feels this way :p but in all seriousness I'm the same way. I like to go in blind and avoid any gameplay and trailers if possible.

I prefer this over cinematic trailers and whatnot. Gamer trust has continuously been lost every year by bad releases. When you get to see raw unfiltered gameplay lets you know how the product is turning out. Cyberpunk never had one of these and I knew it was going to be bad on release. Gamers need transparency.

Cyberpunk did have one of these, they showed the prologue heist, the one where you have to save the woman from the implant scavengers and end with the trauma team arriving on the balcony.

I remember that but it almost felt vertical slice-ish because after that there wasn't anymore raw gameplay. I mean just gameplay of you walking around the world seeing things happen naturally etc. Not super curated mission like the chase sequence when you're first trying to get into the city with V because they also showed that. Those were on very high end PC and they were telling people that this was releasing on a ps4 lol. Gameplay deep dives allow even for possible mistakes to happen just so people know its the real thing not ultra curated.

No. You almost literally always aren’t.

Exciting. I really hope they stick the landing with this one. Ghost of Tsushima is a fantastic foundation and they could really make something very special again.

Hopefully they announce some information on PS5 Pro vs PS5 version.

I loved Ghost of Tsushima so much when it came out. It was my game of the summer that year. If the sequel is even marginally better, I’ll be happy.

The Ghost of Yōtei State of Play gameplay deep dive will stream on PlayStation’s Twitch and YouTube channels on July 10 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST / 11pm CEST.

I’m still pissed they made a whole State of Play trailer just to announce that they’ll drop a blog post in July which will then announce the date for when they’ll finally show more of the game.

My hope is that this isn't just another VERY iterative sony sequel and they have some pretty wild gameplay and structure changes to the open world. The ubi formula of the first game wasn't enough to carry that game the whole way, I was kind of burned out by the end of the first region.

My instinct is that it will just be mostly more of the same as that's what most sony sequels this gen have been. Even death stranding 2 is shockingly iterative.

The thing that bothered me the most was the story not really reflecting your choices outside of the main storyline. It doesn't matter if you went to every bandit camp and challenged them all to honorable combat, because you did a shady thing one time you're the worst person to ever live.

Yea it was too repetitive. Hope they add some variety to the gameplay.

I LOVED the game but you're right i was pretty repetitive. Good foundation for a sequel though.

To each their own. Yes, it was somewhat repetitive, but most things are, yet. For me personally, I was locked in the whole way. For both Ghost of Tsushima and DS1. So far been locked in with DS2, transformative changes would be cool, but I would be quite happy still with an iterative sequel.

We got to stop with these unrealistic expectations. It's incredibly silly to expect a sequel (especially the very first one of the franchise) to suddenly "MIX UP" the formula, when 99% of games have been doing so for decades.

I don't even know where those expectations have started coming up. Sequels are iterative at their core. It's not about creating a whole new experience, but to improve and expand on existing ones (in terms of design).

As long as they improve the side quests and have more unique side content like fighting "legends" and I am happy.

I don't even know where those expectations have started coming up.

They come up because most sony games are narrative heavy, and virtually every single sony sequel that has released in the last 6 years has had a worse narrative than the original. So while the improvements in other places are nice, the story being worse makes the games feel like they have taken one step forward and one step back.

cardonator

Yep they are all graphically better, often have a few nice gameplay improvements, but the narratives are all dramatically worse.

The difference is back in the day the sequel would come out in 1-2 years instead of 5-6.

I would argue those sequels were also not as iterative as they are now because games now are too bloated in length and features. You look at MGS 2-> 3 and there's a ton of differences in those games because they're both only ~10 hours long instead of 50. You can look at mass effect 1->2 and (for better or worse) those games are very different. Devs had to scrap a lot of things they planned because of time and those would often get put into the sequel in some fashion.

Now though? What was missing in ghost of tsushima? It was an ubi style open world game that took upwards of 50+ hours to 100%. They left themselves little room to innovate just like most games do nowadays.

You also can't skip any minor cutscenes or any dialogue. You have to suffer through each one in excruciating detail every single time. These things really pile up.

It's also the first open world game where I felt keenly aware that it was formulaic. I was climbing up a cliff face and I just suddenly felt like wow this feels like the most bland and average cliff climbing. You could look up the definition of the most bland open world activity and see a picture of climbing a cliff face in GoT.

It's not a bad game. But it's 100% accurate to say that the open world did not carry it. I completely agree that it had already worn out its welcome by the end of Act 1.

I’m interested. I didn’t finish the first one cause it got so repetitive by the end of the DLC though, but there are things about the game I really liked, like the spectacular duel mechanics. Add more move variety and replace 75+% of the collectathon fluff with duels and I’m in. At the very least every enemy camp should have a unique duel, IMO. Clearing those bases was fun at first but they are all the exact same and it just got way too easy way too quickly on max difficulty. Add a tough boss fight at the end of each and that’d already be a huge improvement.

I really don't care about single game directs as I want to experience the games as spoiler free as possible.
