There's a funny old giant bomb bit where the Konami execs catch Kojima mocapping a plant with a fan blowing it in different directions, and they were like we're shutting this shit down!

Purrceptron

There is no big secret. He spent way too much money, took way too much time to finish the game, and spent way too much time on obscure kojima details

iampuh

Developing videogames is expensive. That's what happened. Kojima isn't exactly what one would call budget friendly. Also we have to look at the time he was fired. Japanese games and games in general had issues selling, because of all the free to play live service games. They went for the quick buck instead of putting in effort.

I laughed so hard when they revealed his real name was John McClane. I was like "Ohhh, that actually kinda makes sense now" Then they revealed that he got his nickname from something completely unrelated to the movie Die Hard. Kojima is such a troll.

Kojima directly stated that he loves Die Hard so much, he literally named the character for the movie.

The engine is out of this world. There were some portions with Neil Vana that were crazy, and not just during the John Metal Gear parts, like you could see it accurately portraying small eye movements and eye glints.

OrwellWhatever

The decima engine is so fucking good it's unreal. Even when I was playing Horizon Burning Shores, I kept stopping every 30 seconds to take screen caps because I couldn't believe it was real

ZsaFreigh

100%, until DS2 came out, Horizon: Burning Shores was the best visuals I'd ever seen in a video game, including anything on PC.

zxcymn

They've always been leaders in graphical fidelity. Metal Gear Solid on PSX and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 on PS2 were all mind-blowingly realistic at the time of their release.

versusgorilla

MGS1 squeezed everything out of the PSX, it's insane looking at what else came out in 1998. Tomb Raider 3, Resident Evil 2, Ocarina of Time, all games that were great but you can feel the videogame-y qualities, the bad or no voice acting, the videogame-directing, etc. MGS1 you can still watch the cutscenes as a movie. There's reveals in the Codec sequences that are beautiful, set to music, etc. It's insane.

MGS2 looking the way it does as almost a release title for the PS2 is INSANE. It was 2001 and I think only Final Fantasy X comes close to where MGS2 is in direction. Technically, it's another masterpiece. The details where you can shoot through bottles of food in the kitchen areas and the rice/grain falls out, the bottles go flying and land elsewhere in the room. It would be a couple years until Half Life 2 and other games really figured out what Kojima had quietly done in the background of MGS2.

And then releasing MGS3 at the end of the PS2's lifespan seems insane, like he improved on MGS2 by leaps and bounds somehow. The foliage in every map, the guards AI is insanely improved, the story is more beautifully directed than the games preceding it. It's insane what he could accomplish, two of the best looking PS2 games in the entire console library.

The craziest part is the first 5 minutes of the DS2 walkthrough where they show landscapes rendered in-engine. It looked indistinguishable from a high-budget movie.

The Decima Engine is cracked.

I was messing around with the photo mode for Horizon Forbidden West (runs on the same engine), and if you zoom in close enough on a character model, you'll see detailed skin pores.

Wes_Warhammer666

Seeing the little peach fuzz on Aloys cheek was unreal the first time I played around in photo mode. Such a tiny little detail but to the human eye it adds an exponential layer of realism since that's the kind of thing we subconsciously notice is missing when the uncanny valley hits.

Midgar-Knight

It’s more enjoyable and approachable than the first, if you only focus on the story/combat you’ll have a blast, I haven’t finished it yet but it’s one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had. Except for completionist, I feel it’s too much grind to 100%, but I will do it regardless

IamChicharon

Do I have to know the story from DS1?

CalamariFriday

There is a thorough recap of DS1 on the main menu of DS2. So I would say "No" for the most part.

inounderscore

The recap doesn't do it justice. There's a very pivotal sequence in early game that crushed me so hard because of the time I spent in DS1. And then another big moment. I got invested in all the characters from the first game and that brought so much impact to DS2's events that I'd really recommend playing 1 first to really connect with the game at least on an emotional level.

padraigharrington4

grillarinobacon

He's not mentioned in the game at all, nor necessary for the story of 2.

LordSloth113

I think he was referenced in passing one of the times they mention the battlegrounds Sam got pulled into in DS1

Midgar-Knight

I went and saw the recap, crazy how they just put 17 slides, I would assume Kojima would’ve loved to put a 1 hour scene explaining the whole story lol

Potato_fortress

There are some parts the recap covers but doesn’t really extrapolate on so their importance might be lost on someone who hasn’t played the first game. That said, these things are relatively minor and everything else going on around them is weird and distracting enough that even if you don’t understand the small details of everything going on it won’t really matter.

The slideshow recap at the beginning covers everything a person needs to understand about how the world functions and characters over-explain past events (then even say “but why am I telling you, you were there.”) Honestly you could probably get away with watching a relatively short (comparative to playing DS1,) recap on YouTube and be more than prepared.

ImNotSkankHunt42

There’s a lot of weight to it and also the characters, there’s a reason why the audience at SGF cheered at the starting credits…

But I think is one of those games that you could play the sequel then the original and you would feel the emotional impact.

I did play RE4 before RE2 (OGs) and pretty much felt like that.

-Z0nK-

I've heard pretty much the same from a gaming podcast in my country and oh well... guess I'll watch a 3hrs DS1 recap movie and get DS2.

versusgorilla

Yeah, if you just do the main-plot-deliveries and the standard orders, you can get a lot of the fun gear, and if you're not opposed to spoilers, then you can find a list of the preppers worth maxing out stars for specific gear and tools. If you knock the difficulty up, it basically just makes combat harder, so you can play this game really more like a Metal Gear action game than DS1, which really insisted on being delivery focused.

zanghfei

MGSV didn't have DLSS and raytracing back then, and I had i7 3770 with GTX 960. Running with Day 1 Nvidia driver for MGSV and it ran super smooth on 1080p, and go over +100 fps on high-max. Btw, the game release in 2015. We're getting old.

Death Stranding 2 will be perfectly optimized for PC release without fail.
