The level designer snuck in an amazing little reference to [the 1880 painting by Arnold Bocklin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle\_of\_the\_Dead\_(painting)). This game rules btw.
this is making me remember our promise
[COMPARMENTALIZING TRAUMA]
I spent like few minutes just thinking about how do I connect Doom and Signalis…
oh wonderful here comes the PTSD
ACHTUNG
Now that I think of it, there is one Adler line that fits Doomguy...
"I HAVE BECOME WHOLE AGAIN. I wear no mask. AND I HATE EVERYTHING."
Well, less everything and more everything from hell, but point stands.
I see 512s everywhere!
This
I don’t see it but maybe I’m not looking hard enough.
It's the land mass in the back right. Perhaps it looks more like the 1883 painting in the wiki I've added than the photo of the one I've taken. Bocklin made several renditions.
I think the issue is more that your screenshot has the setpiece object you're wanting us to pay attention to in the background, off to the side, and far away, accounting for less than one sixth of the screen space.
I feel like this is one of the few instances that including a red circle would have been good.
Op could also literally just look right, it's not like it's a movie or cutscene
That doesn’t look the same as any of those renditions lol
It looks closest to the 3rd version of it. But yeah it does not look much like the version op posted. No doors, can barely make out that those are supposed to be trees in the middle. And of course the screenshot isn't focused on the example.
I just had to do a deep dive of internet learning to figure this one out.
It's a pretty naked homage. The general structure of the "walls" matches what is consistent along all six versions of the painting. The foliage in the middle is the largest departure, only sp much that the cypress trees in a six versions are perfectly upright, but in-game, the foliage seems to expand horizontally outward as well.
It also seems like we’re looking at it from a different angle than the painting. If we could move about 70 degrees clockwise I think it would line up better
Yes it does.
Dark pillars in the middle surrounded by solid rock.
🤯🤯
no. that's rock surrounded by more rocks. i don't see it either
Might need to get your eyes checked then.
Yeesh I thought of Signalis first instead of the original painting.
Same here, getting that damn key from the painting
Another link between Doom and Animal Crossing, because it's one of the paintings you can collect in New Horizons. It's called the "Mysterious painting," and it gives villagers the creeps when they observe it in the museum.
The villagers need to remember our promise smh
i can kinda see it but not really
but the screenshot is missleading, should have added a "zoomed" in screenshot of just the island
What a terrible post
Oh cool Day of the Tentacle reference
My first thought seeing the Doom screenshot was "Is it supposed to be an homage to Xen from Half-Life?"
Day of the tentacle reference?
That’s what I thought. Apparently not though based on the comments. Still have no fucking clue tbh.
Op sux at screenys
The one time we need a red circle, there is none.
Sorry but they look nothing alike.
Also in Silent Hill 2 remake. Signalis seems to have started a trend.
I don’t think there’s anything to see here. You just want to see something but it’s not there.
Man that is a stretch
As a fan of this series of painting, it's really not. It's a very well known painting and the thing at the top right is very clearly a reference to it.
Then it should be easy to explain how if it's super clear. It just looks like a differently shaped island with a few elements coincidentally in a vaguely similar position
I just did under your other reply. It has pretty much every element of the painting in the same spots... Go research the painting a bit more if you can't see it.
So, all it takes for it to be super clear is to look at a different set of pictures than the ones provided and to do a bunch of research on art history? That's not very clear at all
I mean, to me it's super clear already. But I'm saying if you don't see it maybe more references will help you.
I guess maybe it's not very clear if you dont have a good understanding of perspective and don't see that these are not "negative space" but rather cypress trees.
Don’t worry, it’s super clear to me also.
Reaching.
This is such a far cry lol
Beautiful, this is my favorite painting
I have it as a sleeve on my left arm
It seems to be vaguely similar at best. I feel like if this were an intentional Easter egss, it would be a little more like the painting.
There's multiple versions of this painting, this one may not be the best to show the similarities, but it's very clearly a reference to it.
Wow, that's quite a catch! I had to really look to see what you were even talking about. I do very much love that painting too, that's really cool.
Possible but feels like a stretch.
Do you remember your promise?
Sesbian lex
Perhaps, this is hell.
The hole with the tentacle is also a dead ringer for the game "Barbarians", a side scroller from the 80's.
That cosmic horror level is so wild, the floating octopus demons with legs as tall as skyscrapers just casually milling about disturb me greatly.
That is a really cool easter egg
Are the sceptical people not looking at the good part of the picture? Or are they looking at it and not seeing the similarities?
It's VERY clearly a reference to the Isle of the Dead.
How is it very clear? Those two islands look nothing alike. Oh, there's some slightly negative space in between two hilly bits? Really, that's enough?
The painting has many iterations with somewhat different shapes. But anyone somewhat familiar with art history would see that it is intentional.
If you can shift the perspective you would see that the rocky formations are actually very similar, including the dock part. Beside it having, you know, not "negative space" but coniferous trees. Looks like it has the entrances on the right side rocks, too. And I'm not sure from this perspective but it looks like it even has a small boat about to dock like in all the paintings.
Its not in the center of the image and therefore is completely invisible and undetectable, forever lost to time. /j obv
I love Böcklins art. Some fun facts about this image:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ldkXDLF3U
Wow, Art Cubed.
If I’m understanding this correctly, did they create a 3D model interpretation of this painting, and the player is viewing the island from a slightly different angle? (Amazing if so)
Even having it pointed out I really don't see it. There are two land masses in roughly the same position but not the same shape. It just doesn't seem like it was intentional at all.
Screw this post, how hard was to screenshot the direct set piece instead of making us look for answers in the comments
This is a huge stretch.
Omg!!! I'm so happy you noticed this! He is one of my favorite artists and I'm so happy to know other people know of him. I've asked people over the years and nobody had heard of him. This made my day!
One of my favorite paintings.
They have the same painting in the silent hill 2 remake
There are so many references to classical paintings in the game. It’s really cool!
Very nice
Haven't played it yet, is it good?
To those who don’t see it: look at the island in the top right.
To the OP: maybe take another screenshot where the item you are talking about is in the center of the image. Cool find, but post is a bit hard to see.
Sometimes a red circle would be very helpful

What about commenting on a post?
Got em
OP is getting a lot of validation because he is smarter than the rest of reddit. We need to struggle to understand the painting as vaguely represented in the game and that gives OP delight.
Are people really struggling that much? The painting is literally half the image. Did people not see it then immediately look at the other half of the image for what is similar?
Doing the measurements: It's less than 10% of the screenshot. "Half the image" my ass.
The painting does take up half the image lol he didn’t say the reference in the doom screenshot takes up half the image
I can’t tell if that bottom painting has smudge marks on it or that stuff in the middle is actually part of the painting
Am I the only one who feels like this is still a stretch?
I see it now. Thank you.
