Total sales for slow-life RPG FANTASY LIFE i: The Girl Who Steals Time have surpassed 1.2 million units, publisher LEVEL-5 and developer LEVEL-5 Osaka announced.
Not sure if I’m just out of touch but the success of this game is surprising to me. Do these games usually sell this well? It wasn’t on my radar before but now I’m considering giving it a shot
Cozy/ life sim games became very popular during Covid, especially Animal Crossing.
Fantasy Life can also look like shovelware/mobile-slop on the surface, but the underlying game is actually great. Needed some good reviews and word of mouth to really get going.
its a good polished game , too sad the multiplayer aspect wasn't what I thought it was
I’ve been wanting to give it a try. I love Stardew and liked coral island but hesitant to buy into hype.
Its not a farm sim. It has some farming but its like 2% of the gameplay. No romance either.
Theres combat, crafting, and gathering with a good storyline and a massive map to explore. Doesn't take itself too seriously either. Its lighthearted and kind of silly.
The multiplayer wasn't what I was expecting either. I thought it would be a box standard co-op mode. Shame as cross play would have been nice. Could have played it on my Steam Deck while the GF was playing it on the Switch.
yep. stardew valley, a similar game, has just become the highest rated game on steam after 9 years. That is how popular these life sim games can be. personally if you havnt tried this genre and want to i'd play stardew valley first since its dirt cheap. like $15 nzd. this one in the article is nearly $100 nzd.
The 3ds game was one of my favorite games in the 3ds entirely. It's just so chill and charming to play
I played the one on the 3ds (the only other game in the series?) very recently and while kind of mindless, it reminds me of old games when I was resource gathering and leveling up jobs like when I was a teen playing Runescape and Ragnarok Online or the much later Recettear.
What stood out most to me was how charming it was. It looked kind of generic and devoid of Level 5's normal charm which is why I ignored it for the longest time, but they really took the time to make all the NPCs have colorful dialouge. I had to skip most of the tutorials because there's just too many of them, but I always felt bad because you really miss out on learning the relationships of the town NPCs.
Like I said earlier, I just played the first game so I'm not really itching to play the sequel which looks exactly the same at a glance, but I think for older fans of the game looking for something cozy to play in bed, now is their time.
The original Fantasy Life for the 3DS was a great game, but it dropped at a time where cozy games weren't the powerhouse genre as they are now (2012, Stardew Valley would release in 2016).
It is a simple action-adventure RPG that I feel like drew a lot of inspiration from Final Fantasy XIV in terms of how jobs work, or "Lives" as they're called in Fantasy Life. There are combat jobs, gathering jobs, and crafting jobs. You can freely switch to them at any time. There are class objectives to complete to "upgrade" your class. The gathering lives feed the crafting lives, which feeds the combat lives and character customization. It's a really addicting loop. There is also a lot of fetch quests and stuff to explore -- there was always something to do.
This Fantasy Life i for the Switch/Switch 2 does just about everything better and is at a time where cozy games have a huge market. I've been playing it, sunk 60hrs into it. I've beaten the game and I think I've seen most of the major content, but there is still a ton of recipes to unlock, fetch quests to complete, things to make, and things to master. I'm hoping they come out with an expansion like they did with Fantasy Life for the 3DS. It added quite a bit more content in an already feature-rich game -- I imagine an expansion on Fantasy Life i would be even more massive.
It’s honestly a great game if you enjoy just mindless activities like gathering and crafting. It is a more childish story though but that’s not where the meat is.
Me and a buddy were talking and kind of shocked no one really has taken this genre and made a more dark/mature game with it.
I'd never heard of the game prior to buying it and bought it on choice of some good reviews it's absolutely a blast and super cute I'd recommend
Do these games usually sell this well?
No.
And success is relative. Selling 1.2 million copies is not great for a company that sold over 3 million copies with the first Professor Layton game (not counting re-releases).
Not much options for switch 2 games
Uses Kernel Level Anti-Cheat
Easy Anti-Cheat - Requires manual removal after game uninstall
Damn, was about to buy, but that sort of stuff just rubs me the wrong way.
I’m glad we got this game but I was absolutely disappointed by the multiplayer after having played basically the entire campaign and dlc on the 3ds coop.
Deserved. This game focuses on being fun over anything else.
As a 36 year old man with decades of gaming under his belt: this game is simple for what it is. It's built for play for young kids. But, every single ounce oozes charm and love. I've laughed and chuckled at the dialogue, which is varied with subtle themes adults will pick up on, e.g. is subtly sexual but still kid-friendly.
Every part though was crafted with love. Very clearly not the goal of a ln MBAs spreadsheet, but rather true craftsmen that made a little gold nugget.
10/10 for kids. 6-10/10 for adults depending on where you are on the numbers go up spectrum.
kinda sucks that this didn’t get a worldwide physical release seems like a awesome game
Absolutely deserved. This game is one of the best relaxing games I've played in years. Bonus points because my baby boy loves watching with the cute animation style as well.
Physical version is Japan only left that out he title
It looks interesting but I'll wait for sales... and on steam deck. I dislike the EULA on switch and the price of one doesn't seem entirely worth it. Maybe when switch 2 OLED super happy XXL buy me again model comes out...
So glad a company like level 5 who is using ai is succeeding/s
Everyone who supports this game just want developers to be replaced by ai
If only the co-op wasn't terrible I would play this with my friends...
Better sale than death stranding 2
What’s that got to do with anything?
Didn’t Death Stranding 2 post this same number in like 2 weeks of being on the market?
It wasn’t on my radar before but seeing the sales and discussion about it the last few weeks I’ve looked it up and I’m very interested I’ll just play a bit more of my backlog first and see if it goes on sale
I would love to buy the game used but I can’t
Will it be a real physical game or those stupid key card games that don't count as real physical game.
The Japanese switch version is a real cart and is openly available on sites like play Asia. It is multi language (will play in whatever language your switch is in) and has a switch 2 update if needed.
Thanks I appreciate the info so safest to buy from play asia
Bought the switch1 version of Amazon Japan for the same price as the digital version even after shipping and tax
