Ever experienced existential dread about the nature of your consciousness?
Every single day.
This game is fantastic. Seriously, if anyone thinks they might like it, grab it and give it a go.
Best horror game ever made
This might confuse people. Id say its best in narrative/story, but not in scarier.
The theme is very scary and it made think about it for weeks. That's the most effective kind of horror, not jumpscares or stuff like that.
Well, for me I disagree. Other games cause me way more anxiety and make me wanna stop playing the game, because of how much scared i was. It was not the case with SOMA.
SOMA gives you a "hopeless" and "empty" feeling by the end. Very melancholic, i would say. Its not a good feeling by any means. But i wouldnt consider it as "fear" or as "scary".
It's kinda a litmus test for existential horror, similar to Lake Mungo (although SOMA is less divisive because it does have more action - although the real horror isn't from the monsters in the game, but the thoughts the plot evokes afterwards - similar to Lake Mungo)
Well, good example. Lake Mungo didnt scared me at all(only that kinda jumpscare scene we all know). Again, i think it falls into the "empty", "melancholic" side of things. Which does not make me feel fear per se.
But oh well, people are different and have different approaches to feelings. There is nothing wrong if that is the scariest game ever for some people. I dont have numbers, but im pretty sure the general consensus is that SOMA is not a super scary game. People would list a lot more of other games before naming SOMA as the scariest game ever. Just like they would name other movies before Lake Mungo, for example.
Exactly! Some horror does nothing for me - fx I found the reveal that the evil in Sinister was of demonic origin and not a cult/serial killer deflated all the horror for me. But that doesn't make it a bad movie per se - we just have different things that disturb us! What brings is together is that we like to be disturbed though, whether it's serial killers, existential dread/loneliness or demons. "I delight in what I fear" - Shirley Jackson 😊
Fear is subjective but for me I cant think of a scarier/more disturbing gaming experience. I definitely agree with you on the narrative/story but the variety of encounters, monster design and world building really bring this to the top for me, right up there with Half-life Alyx. I would love any suggestions!
Visage is definetly the scarier game i have ever played. RE7 and Alien Isolation are good experiences as well.
RE7 was absolutely amazing and very scary IMO, Alien Isolation was great but I felt it just got too tedious/repetitive, especially on the hardest difficulty (similar to Amnesia: The Bunker). I haven't got to Visage yet, I will definitely be checking that out!
I never played PT, but people say Visage is PT without being PT.
I just bought Amnesia The Bunker this weekend. Ill have to play it. Also, people say good things about Madison, but i never got the chance to play it.
Do you have any recommendations for me as well ?
The Bunker is overall a very quality horror game with a lot of freedom to solve but a minor spoiler I think everyone should know about it is finding the lighter immediately and start burning the bodies scattered around the map, the rats in that game make the experience extremely tedious and annoying and really start to take the fear out of things
Seeing that you're a fan of Art (he's my favorite slasher by far) I would highly recommend the entire Outlast series ESPECIALLY Whistleblower. The co-op game (Outlast Trials) is also excellent and can be played solo (although it is a lot more fun with friends).
Wish I could play this for the first time again..
Good news! You can make your friends play it while you watch lol
Surely this is a precursor to SOMA 2 announcement.
You start a new game and it's just you sitting in darkness for hours unable to interact with anything.
I’m surprised it wasn’t already on Switch, they should at least do a Switch 2 Edition
Yeah they should let you play as Mario in the game
Probably the best horror game story I've ever seen. Highly recommended to everyone who likes sci-fi horror stories.
Preferably play it on PC as Switch port looks... rough.
How are the jump scares? I don't do well with horror games, but if it has a good story...
I don’t know why people are telling you this game doesn’t have jump scares. It definitely has a few. It also has a few small “pipes burst with steam” style scares. This isn't five nights at Freddy’s but there are a couple times you can get pretty easily snuck up on.
That said, you can play a safe mode that disables enemies from attacking you. They won’t chase you, but if you get close they’ll shove you back. Otherwise the enemies don’t interact with you and you can play the game at your own pace. I love safe mode and recommend it 100%.
If I remember correctly it doesn't have any jump scares, but there are enemies you have to run away from and they can corner you.
So there are high tension moments that might stress you, but otherwise it is a pretty sensible game when it comes to respecting players. It is mostly a psychological horror.
Terry Akers would like to speak with you.
Hardly any from memory. A couple of tense moments that might catch you off guard but the horror comes more from the story/implications of the narrative, not so much visual scares.
Might have to finally check this out
Still lives rent free in my head 10 years after playing. Late at night when I can sleep just churning thru that existential dread and philosophical conundrums again and again. 10/10
Cool fact: The protagonist’s name is Simon because “Simon Says”. 😎
This game feels like an obscure sci-fi novel from the 70s, which is part of what I love about it.
Truly terrific and a must play for fans of narrative driven Sci fi/horror
Incredible game. Played it years ago and I still think about it now and then. Possibly the greatest narrative of any horror game I've played.
If you’re in to horror at all this is a great game. Atmosphere is amazing.
Such a great game and what a twist at the end!

Nobody has said that, shut the hell up
Are you really still contributing to console wars in the year 2025? Celebrate that a great game is getting a wider audience.
Where are we? On a Xbox Facebook post in 2011?
I'm really not sure what you're upset about. Is this affecting you in any way? Does Soma coming to the Switch take away from any other game that has come out / coming out soon? You're just a bitter old fart.
"so many games to play at launch!"
rofl this game will be 10 years old come September.
You're not wrong, but Nintendo glazers will say otherwise.
Yet literally no one in this thread has said anything remotely close to that.
As if we're only talking about the horror subreddit, you rube.
WTF does it matter if the Switch subs are happy for the game's release? You turned the post into console war bait.
Aren't you the one crying tho?💀
Imagine going to these lengths over a console. Get help.
You're the one that felt the need to comment about the "console wars". I was just agreeing with the guy that said something about Nintendo fans. But you post in the Nintendo sub, so I guess you feel the need to white knight for Nintendo. Miyamoto won't fuck you, bro.
Nice to see Soma still getting attention.
Actually quite relevant more than ever, because AI scientists are having so much trouble with alignment and SOMA does a good portrayal of what it’s like if AI were to follow human-directed objectives without understanding what those objectives are for.
Legitimately one of my favorite games. These days I just toss it on story mode and enjoy myself with the narrative but this, Prey, and Moonfall always hit.
