I finished watching The Burning (1981) after finishing the first friday the 13th movie. I liked The Burning much better.

it had a better character developing. it is considered a copy of friday the 13th. But i liked it much better. haven't watched other friday the 13th movies. I know jason is shown in realtime from 2nd movie. but I hope there are some character development in other movies.

I found The Burning to be more evil, all the lads are shithead pervs & bullies. I found myself wanting everyone dead.

It's also the origin of Harvey Weinstein as a producer.

Very good podcast episode of With Gourley And Rust about it here

The Raft scene is one of my, favourite sequences. Both films also had effects/me up by the Legendary Tom Savini.

The difference with the burning is it spends half the film with the ridiculous campers then kills them all off at once and isolating the survivors, creating the slasher sequence half way through like a "reveal"

I was interested until this.

This is how they made the character development so good in a 1 hour 30 mins movie. I actually cared who is going to be killed and who is not unlike Friday the 13th movie.

I mean only one of them has George Costanza with beautiful full head of hair.

In any case, yes I also enjoyed The Burning more than any Friday 13th entry

Un-sarcastically he really fucking does. Saw his live show a few years ago and it was incredible. Jokes, stories, singing.

Jason is a treasure!

He’s deliciously fun evil in an episode of Criminal Minds!

I'm still questioning if he had a wig on in The Burning or not. But man I never imagined George costanza selling condoms and porn lol

Now watch Madman which was made at the same exact time as The Burning and also is about the Cropsey urban legend. Its a sillier campier take but I enjoy it because i like sillier campier movies. Its funny how similar all three movies are and they all more or less just organically happened to be conceptualized around the same time, despite it seeming like they ripped each other off (in reality they all basically just saw the success of ultra low budget Halloween and decided to rip that off, they just all happened to decide to do the same thing but at summer camp for some reason).

I think The Burning is a better written film with better developed characters. It's also, certainly, a more "active" film whereas F13 is a fairly slow burn.

That said, where F13 tops triumphs is the ending. Everything from the reveal of Mrs. Voorhees through the the finale is slasher gold, and it really cemented the final girl chase/fight that became a genre trope. The Burning fizzled out in the finale. It's easily the worst part of the film, and by the time it comes around, all of the "worthy" characters have been killed off and there's no one left to root for.

I didn't like The Burning. It was too overstuffed, too many characters. I cared about Alice in Friday the 13th and Betsy Palmer was simply wonderful as Pamela Vorhees. I could barely remember who was who in the last act of The Burning.

I could remember because it’s Alfred and he’s awful.

I think The Burning is probably just the better all around movie. I like the first Friday the 13th but as a standalone movie it isn’t spectacular or anything

There's been a theory that the head they used at the beginning was Mrs. Vorhees from the end of Part II. I consider them very close, other than the hospital / city setting in The Burning.

I love this slasher! I actually liked the characters, the gore and Rick Wakeman's fabulous score!

The Burning is much better than Friday the 13th. It's the 2nd best slasher film of all time to Halloween (1978) imo.

Too bad there was not any sequel of the burning. really need a remake atleast

I suppose the best way to phase it is Friday the 13th adds more value to the horror universe than The Burning due to quantity but the Burning is better than any Friday the 13th film.

I don't think The Burning needs a remake. That would be like saying Sleepaway Camp needs a remake. Can't top perfection :-)

Same. When I watched 'The Final Girls' and 'Of a Violent Nature' both reminded me of 'The Burning'.

That might be because despite all of its flaws, The Burning pretty much gives you everything Friday the 13th just promises to give you. By that I mean, you have the camp setting, you have actual campers and counselors and you have a hulking killer mowing through them like weeds. You don’t really get that in the Friday movies until part 6.

That being said — if you’re looking for a truly great campers in danger slasher movie, Just Before Dawn is by far superior to Friday the 13 and The Burning in just about every way.

Most people seem to. I think it's because things happen in The Burning and Friday the 13th (1980) is just boring.

Never saw the burning but the original Friday kinda blows imo.

The F13 movies get way better. Part 2 is my fave, closely followed by 4 and 6. After 6, your mileage may vary.
