Amazing. Plus the bonus reminder that insurance companies are cunts.

Insurance company: fingers "not medically necessary"

I would have bought a 3d printer and some monopoly money so good on him.

city-of-cold

Friendly reminder that this varies by country (and company.

I work for an insurance company in Sweden, and we actively look for reasons to payout, if there’s even doubt to begin with.

I suppose it helps having universal healthcare so in most cases you’re fine even without insurance. Which means insurance companies actually have to compete to find customers and you can’t compete if you keep denying shit.

you guys still use insurance companies lol, they are the biggest scam on the planet f*ck em

I happen to like cunts. What I don't like are insurance companies.

Capital-Blacksmith19

That's amazing, I love his ingenuity! But the insurance company? "Fingers are not medically necessary."?! Let me duct tape your left hand into a fist and see how you manage without your fingers. Idiots.

SlotHUN

Yeah. A working man doesn't need fingers? What do you think he uses for work, his elbow?

gatsome

Wait til you discover how few teeth are “medically necessary” and not simply “cosmetic”

Nazeem750

yeah that made me super mad, you can't do anything without your fingers!

denjin

I agree its BS, but isn't the fact that he built himself a new hand, without fingers, suggestive of the insurance companies point?

DASreddituser

no because 99.99% of people cant do that and the insurance company will always dent at 1st because they want to make you appeal for the insurance you already have been paying for. because some.people wont appeal and that helps the company make more money. It's legal insurance fraud and it's scummy. there is a reason we have 3rd party arbiters but even then the made rules are still in the favor of the company.

Capital-Blacksmith19

Can't argue with that logic, but I still think the insurance company was wrong in that comment even though they did turn around and reimburse him later.

SpicySushiAddict

There was a tangible cost in materials, time, and expertise.

He absolutely has grounds to sue the insurance company.

denjin

I said I thought it was bullshit, but from a purely medical perspective, losing the fingers on his non-dominant hand hasn't actually affected his abilities as en engineer.

His most recent parts / iteration was hit by $400+ import tariffs and it's still cheaper to pay them than have the aluminum parts made domestically. Bit of a bummer since he's trying to improve both his hand and another electrician with a similar situation.

Im just over here shocked that it said he “was” suffering from multiple myeloma 4 years ago. 11 years ago, when I lost a parent to MM, the odds were highly against remission or an operational cure. MM is nasty and it’s amazing he has overcome it.

What is the actuator in these fingers? Like what causes the fingers to contract, I know it’s electric but what is the muscle like mechanism that causes the contraction?

Affectionate-Memory4

It's not electric. Purely mechanical and based on the movements he can still do. His youtube channel has a lot of the build process and discussion of it.

rezzmeh

Thanks, do you know if it could be done electrically to enhance the power

Affectionate-Memory4

Probably, but I'm fairly certain Ian has said before that he wants to keep it purely mechanical. 1: he's a machinist and can remake or upgrade any part that fails that way, and 2: it always works the exact same, no weakening as a battery runs down or needing to be charged.
