Harder for other snakes to swallow.

I'd be interested to hear how the horns benefit the snake. As amusing as it is to picture it locking horns with a rival snake to establish dominance, I'm guessing that is not how their purpose here. Is there thorny vegetation in it's environment that it hides around?

I'm walking along, lost in the desert, barefoot because my shoes kept me from burning up on reentry into Earth's atmosphere.
Inadvertently, I step on a spike which really hurts. Next thing I know, the spike is moving, and I feel a sharp pain on top of my other foot.
I raise my second foot to look and I see two punctures. I lower my foot to get out of the area and step on two spikes. Dammit.
