This shit is so hard to navigate and if you want to go to a different section or look something up you have to go all the way to the top. Piracy is looking like a mighty fine option right now
Netflix goes by the "if it ain't broke, break it" rule
Spotify abides by this too
They just did something good tbf you can now view oodles more previously listened to songs than before which is a nice change
How do you do that?
Click on recents under the panel icons at the top of your home page and it should take you to a list of older things
ITunes too. They always we’re moving ui elements and forgetting to make them tab-key-reachable. You HAD to use the mouse. So the JAWS screen reader didn’t see them and you couldn’t tab cycle thru to play a specific song, say. Made it useless for blind folks.
I swear the last time I used Spotify it had the equivalent of YouTube shorts in there. What are we doing with these apps?
So does Youtube
Or "...cancel it"
This is the second time already
They did create Chaos Monkey which is specifically designed to go crash production services on purpose to test their infrastructure lol.
“Nobody Wants This”
Accurate
"If it ain't broke, fix it until it is."
"If it ain't broke, you're not trying"
Fucking hate this thing
Ditto
I love that they barely ever mess with the UI on AppleTV.
I’m not a big Apple fan but Apple TV is the best streaming device by a mile
Given it’s barely a gaming unit it’s super overpowered for what it needs for streaming too, so has some of the longest supported lifespan out of currently available Apple products too. Plus your tv manufacturer can’t sell all your usage and viewing habits.
Most people I know use $200-300 TVs, so it feels weird recommending a $150 streaming device. Those are the TVs that desperately need a device though; I’ll usually recommend the $30-50 Roku while giving Apple TV a shoutout. I love my Apple TV though.
I currently have Apple TV on my older TV and using native WebOS on my LG C2. Been waiting for the new Apple TV revision to get a second one, though leaks make it sound like the main changes are improved gaming, AI, and a camera, none of which I care about. I wonder how many people care about Apple gaming; I feel like most people that are interested in tech enough and can afford an Apple TV would have a console/PC.
Honestly my newest AppleTV is a 4k2 and even my older 4k1 beats the crap out of most modern smart TV’s for responsive UI. Brand name manufacturers cheap out on specs hard because they don’t care about consumers on a 3-4 year old tv, then they fill it with ads and trackers to slow it down even more.
It really needs some cloud gaming partners though. Would be a perfect STB for cloud gaming.
Perfect TVs would be ones that are great displays, and have them leave the UI to the AppleTV. And disconnect their Internet/Wi-Fi, so they can't report on your habits.
Also, my Sony TV that used to work pretty nicely, convinced me to download the update. Stupid move on my part to plug it in and let it do so. Now, when you first start the TV, it starts showing any content for about a minute, and then it goes dark while displaying "Connecting to external speakers", sometimes it switches back correctly and sometimes it goes to an input menu. I am sure the Sony sound bar is part of this mess. Maybe I need to update the soundbar too.
Was this starting late last year?
I was surprised Sony dropped an update on my 2013 X series Bravia that fixed that, was a long standing bug that impacted a certain implementation of HDMI / CEC that Apple managed to trigger in the iOS 18 update.
Wasn’t just Sony, but was mostly Sony, and they were pretty good at addressing it even on the older TV’s.
Even that 2013 OperaTV Bravia 4k works better in a smart home than the new ones though. New ones you get whatever features they’ve exposed which is often only power on/off. Mine? Full HTTP Get API that you only seem to get in commercial units now and some clever cookies have made bridges to expose every smarthome feature available.
As someone who has played PC games all my life, and tinkered heavily with my Mac and MacBooks, Apple gaming sucks and I think it’s because there is little interest because it sucks so there is little interest. Like a snake eating its tail.
Game devs have to re do a lot of work to make things run on iOS and there are still funky things going on cuz Apple is very specific and not very tinker friendly at all. So devs ignore Apple, but cuz Apple is ignored, it is never talked about as a marketable output (like they just won’t sell as well)
I know Apple has limited some of its “gaming” to the Apple Arcade (which is actually pretty worth it now, stardew, terraria, and even some in-house games were fun) but these are all simpler or already native to Mac.
Whiskey used to be a thing but pretty sure it’s shit the bed now.
All of this was to say, I wonder why they’d add gaming functionality when they don’t really have any intense games that would require it. But maybe this is a sign there is something in the pipeline
I just am not too confident about Apple/Mac gaming due to experience and like I said, feels like a self eating cycle of sucky game = no interest > no interest = no profit > no profit = low effort game > low effort game = sucky game
Idk just sharing my experience and opinions
Apple refurbs are often available around 100$ and basically like new and even have warranty.
I don’t think so. It’s extremely subtle in showing you which show you have selected and it’s a hassle just to go to a different episode that isn’t the next one in continue watching. You click on the show, start the show, go to info, then details, then get redirected, then you can scroll down to episodes. There should just be a previous episode and next episode button when you pause each show.
That's Apple TV+ the streaming service, I meant the streaming device. Though I think you can aggregate shows into one platform, that's probably as you describe, but I just use it as an app launcher and each app has its own UI. I agree the Apple TV+ app UI is not great, but there's some amazing shows I still think it's worth checking out (my favorites have been Foundation, See, and Silo).
Ohh my mistake. Yea, there are some great shows. If you like Foundation and Silo, you’ll probably like Murderbot as well. I’ll have to check out See. Haven’t heard of that one.
Yeah great platform for Sci Fi. I’d rank those three in the order I listed them, better than Silo and Silo was great. I’m currently watching Murderbot, enjoying that too.
Except their UI sucks
I don't know if my Netflix is messed up but it's almost the same movies on every row.
I scroll down and down and it's the same shit with a few different movies mixed in. It's so hard to find anything to watch.
Tip. If Ur using a TV remote. You can hold the back/return button to go back to the top bar
A big cluster fuck. Hard to find what I want to watch.
that's what they want. because the reality is; a lot on content already left netflix.
It’s been impossible to find titles since the update that got rid of the star rating system. You can’t even find all their titles without specifically searching for them in the search bar. If you search by genre it only shows like 50 movies. They have thousands.
They don’t want to be a catalog. They want to be a labyrinthine clusterfuck that uses algorithms to push slop down your gullet while simultaneously forcing you to spend as much time as possible “engaging with” (endlessly doomscrolling) their platform.
They don’t care if you find what you want. In fact they want to make it harder. It’s their guiding principle on all UI changes.
Well said. I’m canceling my subscription.
This, and it fluffed up my algorithm! I watch a lot of... Well, light films and shows. ><; I like cartoons, and animated films like Disney. Now, it keeps auto-directing me to murder documentaries because they are 'popular now'. NO! I will not go from watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, to a documentary show thing, of a little girl being killed in her own home, and police being useless f'ing trash and blaming her parents and refusing to believe anything else for years! Frick you autoplay and Netflix for putting this on when I couldn't turn it off!!!!@#$
May be worthwhile checking your password hasn't been compromised/view history to ensure someone else hasn't been using your account. Sounds unusual that "lighter" themed programs usually aimed at younger audiences would get recommended programs with adult themes unless it's some sick joke by a jaded developer. I would feed this back to Netflix support at the very least, especially so if you are the bill payer for the account.
I am definitely the bill payer, and the first thing I did was check my account access history, only me. It used to have the watching list on the top, now it has the Doc & Reality stuff, but it's all criminal things! No nature ones like Blue Planet, just death and horrible, nasty people and things. When I finished with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it started autoplaying those at the top. Not to mention, it's not keeping track of what I am watching, as I couldn't even find the one it auto-played to downvote it.
That's just one of its standard categories though, everyone gets that like they get nostalgic 90s, offbeat comedy, action packed, bingeworthy series, etc. I see all kinds of categories I couldn't give a shit about, I just skip past them.
I don't care that they are there, I care that Netflix is autoplaying children being murdered after I was watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and it seems to autoplay what's at the top row. :Edit, Actually, I do care. I want my watchlist to be back at the top, as well as them fixing the auto-play!
Prime is pulling some bs now where 3 mins before an episode ends it just autoplays the next ep. Shows that have no end credits keep being cut off halfway through a scene, it's ridiculous. I have turned off autoplay now but even then you get this huge overlay asking what to watch next - bitch I aint done with this yet
I really hate it. I hate that the selected show takes up half of the screen so I lose overview and I hate that the audio for the show starts playing 0.3 seconds after it’s “selected.”
There used to be a way to get rid of that autoplay bullshit, but you had to log into your Netflix account on a browser and go deep in the settings. But last I time I opened Netflix (months ago) they deleted my preferences.
Weird, my autoplay off seems to be holding on so far. I probably just jinxed it.
I always mute as soon as I open Netflix, because that annoys me SO much!!
Yes! I just got comfy in bed, turned on Netflix and said “wtf is this!!”
Yeah it sucks my continue watching bar never shows up anymore or if I'm scrolling it just repeats the same shows
At least it's self aware
Nobody Wants This
Netflix has always had a fuckass menu.
Imagine going to a restaurant where each page of the menu has duplicate dishes on every single page and they're all under nonsense headings like "When you're hungry" or "I'll have what they're having".
I'm about to unsubscribe over this, I can't navigate more than a few seconds before I'm just so mad I go to one of the other services. Why keep paying for something I can't even bring myself to look at much less use?
That's a truly perfect description of it. It's horrendous.
Cannot stand UI elements that wildly change size as you scroll onto them. Just spend all the time trying to stare only at the smaller ones as you scroll.
Yeahhhh. I logged in last week to the new UI and immediately said “what the fuck is this shit”. It’s bad, bad. Like, I’m not going to use Netflix bad.
They took away the new and trending category that was on the side. Now I have to scroll down and just hope it displays it to me.
It’s the biggest piss off and super annoying to navigate to the search option
Netflix is like a baker that came up with a really good recipe, but then decided that instead of frosting, they should use dog crap and broken glass. It's baffling really.
EVERYTHING about Netflix is designed to keep you scrolling for longer and watching less. I could only speculate (and I have my theories) why every single update has made the platform harder to navigate and to identify new titles, but that’s undoubtedly been their north star in all these UI redesigns.
Self aware of their bullshit
This is why people break the law. The legitimate ways of doing things are such a pain in the arse that it is way easier to just do it dodgily
Fire the UI designer unless the point is to limit the amount of content a person can see at a given time to ultimately make it harder for customers to realize content has been removed.
I’m pretty sure the point of every UI update is to make it harder to identify new titles, so you spend more time “engaging with” their platform. But at some point they’ll take it too far for even the most braindead doomscroller. Everyone has their limit. I quit Netflix like 2 years ago and now only download it for a month at a time every now and then to watch something specific. Browsing Netflix to find something new is intolerable.
That’s 100 percent what it’s about.
I fucking hate sideways scrolling
Curious about what's even on Netflix that's worth watching these days, is there anything actually good on there that's not somewhere else? I've been coasting with Disney/Hulu and Crunchyroll for years.
YouTube did similar shit last year too. Why would I want to see many options on my giant TV screen when I can see only 4 instead?
YouTube is annoying me with the “who’s watching” nonsense I have to click every time. It’s just me. Why do I have to click the only option every time lol.
Yeah I hate this fuckass bullshit menu!! Glad to see I’m not alone in thinking this!
Absolutely hate it. I also find it super stressfull how they start playing trailers with full volume within seconds.
Is there even a way to look for specific genres now without having to scroll all the way down until you find it?
Hate it so much
i hate how movies just start playing and you have to go to their website to change setting.
Nothing good on there anyways. Cancel it.
I hate it. Several streaming services do this when they blow the picture up of the one you have selected, which is just terrible and useless.
Also, hold in the back button on your remote to get back to the top menu - at least they added that function..
It feels like all the research and usability studies we did 10-15 years ago about location, user preferences, color, etc. all went out the window and now some jackhole with an art degree from the 3rd rate community college thinks they know UX and UI design.
They got that Fortnite ui...
tbh the only thing i don’t like about it is that you have to go all the way back to the top one row by one to get to the search button, but otherwise i think it looks fine
If you go all the way left it goes to the top. At least it does on my LG TV.
i will have to try that next time, thank you!
What infuriates me is on the firestick clicking back a couple times doesn't ask you if you want to exit the app, you literally have to go to the menu and scroll all the way down to the exit button to get out.
The show just next to Bridgerton being nobody wants this
is perfect
What the hell man- if it ain't broke ....
It allows them to have less content, since the viewers can now see less content. Therefore saving them money for shareholders.
Fuck the shareholders man
Every time a bad decision is made its because of the greedy shareholders
Have both netflix and Amazon prime subs but watch the content on Stremio, simply to avoid the shite interfaces on both.
"Nobody Wants This"
Damn right they don't, change this shit back.
I canceled my Netflix a few months ago. I’ve been traveling since March but it wanted me to log into my home WiFi. I sold my house so…no. I go to the chat to explain my situation. The chat is an AI bot, it asked me for what my screen said—I wrote down exactly what the screen said and it said is that all the message error said. I responded with “that’s all.” And the chat ended because it interpreted that as ‘goodbye’. I cancelled my Netflix that night and decided if they want to cut corners on the customer facing side, I’ll cut them out of my bank account.
Plus, their selection and menu have been fucky for years now. Fuck Netflix, I’ll pirate.
shit is dog water
Making it impossible to find shit is probably a metric they want, keeps you scrolling through the endless shit content, and increases user time.
Most people only consume 1 to 2 hours of direct content at a time, if they spend 30 to 40 minutes cruising a menu then netflix is eating up 1/3 of all their content time.
Title made me spit my mf drink
This update is terrible. They removed or buried the coming soon section that I use to use A LOT to see what's coming next week, or what was announced for later this year etc to put it on my remind me list . Smh
Netflix does this because menu confusion keeps you in the app longer. That's why they do this.
my wife was telling the same issue in order to get back to the search bar. She'd have to be go all the way up so she passed it to me and I hit it the Netflix button and it took me to search icon.
I was on the fence anyway this did it canceled to many cheaper options
I hate it, but I bet they’re gonna start to have way less content to save money. Harder to notice when the icons are a lot bigger that there’s leas content, as opposed to the old little boxes.
I am glad I am not alone in feeling this is a horrible change. I was like "WTF is this?!?" to my wife when she wanted me to find something on Netflix for her.
I need Netflix to stop auto playing every single thing I scroll over after . 05 seconds.
How fucking shit is it!! Can’t even look by genre anymore. No need to reinvent the wheel when it’s rolling okay. They’re ass hats for this one
I hate how they advertise mobile games when you login....I came for streaming shows not fucking games
it's like they want people to pirate
The fact that to exit the app you have to go to the user pic then scroll down is criminal. The developers deserve jail time.
Fuckass is apt
The thing that always drives me nuts is that everything autoplays
Pressing 'Back' on the remote takes it back to the sections like Movies,Series, etc irrespective of how far you've scrolled. Hope it helps.
This kind of “change it because we can” bs annoys me so much
"Oh no it takes a few more clicks to do a thing, bEtTeR sTaRt StEaLiNg"
"What's a fuckass?" -Samantha Darko
I like it
Me too, looks way cleaner.
Wow, so glad I finally canceled in April, was not worth the $24.99 a month for mid-tier content
It's utter shite. I hate the fact that I'm now restricted to view only 5 items at any time.
Plus the nav bar being at the top and not the side is so bad as it takes forever to get to if you're at the lower end of the page. And it just just looks crap, the previous version was fine and worked well.
the repeated wallet raping by ever increasing subscription prices didn’t do it for you already?
I will add this as another reason as to why I pirate
Check out Kanopy or Hoopla through your local public library
You can go back to the top bar if you press your “return“ button on the remote. At least that’s how it works on my LG TV. Don’t know what to do if there isn’t one though.
PSA:
The UI has not changed on PS5. I would assume it's the same with PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X
Yet.
This is a really good example of the difference between UI and UX
And what's the point of all the blue surrounding the screen?
JustWatch is the solution. I only do my browsing there. I tell it which service I have, and it tells me what movies are available. It even links to IMDB so I can real an actual plot synopsis.
Get an Rbox.
As the movie says, Nobody Wants This.
Tbf, netflix UI has been disgustingly bad since launch
Its only good if you want to watch shows that they're shoving in your face
Ask my friends Seedbox and Plex how they get around this.
So you ever finish an episode or movie?
yar har diddle dee dee..
I hate it
Give those UI engineers a break, guys. They're only getting paid top dollars.
It’s ass but really I just wish the selected video didn’t take up half the screen with a different thumbnail. It just seems so much more distracting and difficult to scroll through options.
I hate the new direction of UI design. I want to see a bunch of things at once, not one thing at a time
I hear using Radarr and Sonarr with Plex or Jellyfin is where it's at
Heh
Not gonna lie, it looked exactly like this back when Netflix first started offering web streaming.
Can’t stand it
This has to be for tablets right?
Man I actually like this lol. I could never find anything I want on the old one anyway.
Netflix “allow me to show you multiple different genres that are all actually the same 6 movies”
If you have a Netflix subscription you've already given up on life.
You can press the back button to go to the top. Its easy to navigate.
Yup it's garbage and I don't like it one bit.
I hate it. It made me close netflix and use another streaming service.
Cancelled NF for the first time in a decade last month. I don’t miss it at all.
This fuck ass menu is really shit house
Pissed us off the other day. Had to fucking search for continue watching. That should be the fucking starting point!
I used to be able to go all the way left and it would shut the fuck up when I'm trying to talk to my wife
Now they made it so I can't just stop it from auto playing for one sec so I don't have to talk for some dumb ass preview drives me nuts.
I’m still mad they blanked all the ratings when they switched to thumbs
i think it looks fine but it’s really frustrating after scrolling then wanting to search, you have to scroll all the way back to the top. i like the menus where the navigation is on the left hand side for fasting switching.
Welcome to Hulu's UI..
I gave up on Netflix years ago. Genuinely can't remember the last thing I watched that was worth my time. So much crap.
i HATE it. it’s making me literally not even want to use it anymore
I actually like it
Mine is full of games why should I have to scroll forever to get to the movies/TV when that’s the entire reason I’m paying for Netflix 😭
This makes me glad I don’t have Netflix
I hate it so much, i liked being able to see a lot of choices and with it so zoomed in now you can only see like 10 choices at a time
I hate the new UI too, but if you go all the way left it goes to the top. Not great if you have been scrolling right but if you have been scrolling down it at least saves a bit of time. The old UI was still better in every way though
Moving the search to the top is super infuriating
They looped back around to the way Netflix looked on my Xbox 360.
It’s awful. Suddenly everything is a phone even though it’s not a phone. Fuck Netflix.
I have almost no idea what is coming out anymore.
You don’t have to go all the way up. Press the NETFLIX button on your remote and it will highlight the menu
The new ui just feelS like it's shouting at me constantly.
I’ve been trying to think of a way to describe the new UI and “fuckass” is perfect, thank you
Good God.
I wish I could pay to make a ui worse what a cool job.
Do you watch a lot of shows just halfway or do those progress bars mean something else
Idk I think it looks better than the last one they had. It has the same issues but at least it looks better imo
i don't even like / use Netflix and i think the UI doesn't look bad compared to the old one
A tale old as time I remember when YouTube started redesigning its channel UI back in the day. Worst timeline.
My jellyfin still looks the same
[deleted]
That’s probably because TV networks keep going “we can be like Disney and have our own subscription!” And pulling all their content, only to realise oh wait we don’t have enough content so can only be a channel like paramount plus.
Firestick jailbreak ftw.
The back button on your remote will take you straight to the top bar. They definitely traded out a more readable and intuitive UI for no reason, but it's not that much less functional.
pstream.org
your welcome.
UI mfs be bored as hell just changing shit for no reason lol.
Got to justify the paycheck
Literally. Design people finish a design and then on to redoing it all over again lol what a life
I’m a UXer by trade. At a company like this, they get told to redesign by product leadership. Not because it wasn’t working, but because they use redesigns as a way to get users to have increased engagement with their product. “Oh, you got it down pat to get to what you wanted before? Time to change it all up so you can be reintroduced with our offering.”
Gets us talking about Netflix. Hell, gets us opening Netflix. Articles get written. Engagement goes up. Yay, we did it.
What Costco does by moving everything around every couple of weeks to make you search through the store and grab things you otherwise wouldn’t have
God I hate that so much. Supermarkets here do it as well. Luckily not as often as Costco apparently but it always annoys the shit out of me.
Any press is good press
They're not getting cut for AI designs?
"What if we just fucking ruined this entire thing?"
-Every website or streaming service when their UI works fine and is easy to navigate
Let’s take this design and barely change the visuals AND THEN JUST MOVE EVERYTHING.
But then again they can do something as small as change the color of a very small part of the page and people freak out.
I saw so many people saying “I thought my device was broken!” when YouTube changed the color of the navigation bar.
No matter what, people are dumbasses and will complain.
Or in any way resembles the familiar, navigable UI of another platform. No way we can have consistency across apps.
They’re trying to do the grocery store gimmick of putting milk and eggs at the way back of the store.
Let’s take this design and barely change the visuals AND THEN JUST MOVE EVERYTHING.
There is a good reason behind this, just not for you as a user. They make navigation obscure so you won't be looking for something, but watch what they recommend.
Or that you skip straight to the category/section you're used to, but have to scroll past other things they hope to draw your attention, whil you're looking for what you actually want.
Doesn't work with me, I turned netflix off the first time I saw the new update.
Usually changing it for the worse too.
This is like Microsoft Teams. Every couple weeks, I log in for work and it looks totally different. I have to set my status to busy, spend 20 minutes learning to use it all over again, and then take the rest of the day off (while staying logged in, of course).
Oh I feel this, Teams is legit the bane of my existence sometimes lol.
