What happens if it touches the ground?!
I’m not willing to find out. My grandparents have both since passed away without revealing why it is doomed to a life with no ground.
It knows what it did.
Putting the rock in air jail like my cat
Do you want to pee on it?
Damn ass rock
Damn, ass rock
Damn-ass, rock 🤘
Damn_ass_rock
Every time I quote this video to someone they look at me like im insane. Glad to see it in the wild.
Does it have a snail with eternal life inside?
Ive been looking for my racing snail.
r/UnexpectedNeverendingStory
Decoy snail
Well I mean OP did say his grandparents passed so....
Were your parents Greek gods by any chance?
My mind kinda went here as well. Like, is there some kind of creature being cursed to be trapped in stone for so long as it never touches the Earth?? That is some Hera type shit right there. Probably one of Zeus' sidepieces inside.
Zeus visited grandma. Uncle now trapped.
Or it's a weight to keep the flag pole straight.
won a gardening contest against athena
Well, bitch should have thought of that before getting challenged to a gardening contest by Athena
It is an earthquake detector
Gary's weather forecasting stone!
Well your grandparents didn't think this through very well. If you simply bury it, it will certainly be touching the ground.
OP, you must never let the stone touch the ground. Your grandparents did this for a reason. Would you want to be the one responsible for bringing incredible misfortune to your family, insane natural disasters hitting the house, and years of bad luck?
When you sell the house, make sure the new owners know of this too.
Find out if its cursed!
They probably stubbed their toes on it and decided this was a fitting punishment.
I bet all the rock did was rock out and a unhappy person shammed it
maybe it’s a stand for something, the rock is there as a weight it keep it steady.
That's absurd. That is very clearly a cursed stone from the Olden Times of unfathomable creatures and demons that was hidden away during the Changing. If that seed of primordial evil ever touches the ground again it will unleash horrors this world hasn't seen in billions of years. It is banded in iron to cage those foul powers and the voices that would otherwise drive a mortal mad.
you’re right, i’m so embarrassed i didn’t even notice, i’m so sorry.
FREE ROCKY!!!
DO NOT-- For the CURSE!
Touch it. Dare you
It's not touching the rock that's the problem. It's the rock touching the ground that we all fear.
Time ceases to exist.
The old gods are released
The straps make the rock wobbly and unstable. Keeping it off the ground and leveling the points that touch the ground makes the stand more stable. It may just have been a pole to tie things to - clothesline or backyard lights maybe.
Some SCP shit, undoubtedly.
That’s the only thing that’s been holding the earth together since 2012.
The grandfather dies
The snail will find you
Better to not mess with that rock
Despite all my rage I am still just a rock in a cage.
Someone will say that the rock should forever be caged.
what is lost can never be saved
It’s actually an ancient Viking torture device - the Fårfůllnirdottirssons brjóta höfuðkúpu á spjóti.
...A Møøse once bit my sister
Mynd ü moose bites kan be pretti nasti
I heard this in Betty White’s voice.
Back in St Olaf
Now I will never be able to read that again without hearing her voice
When combined with all the other devices it creates one of the worst torture devices known to man.....let's see how you holding up
Anthropology 101
I can see her writing this on a chalkboard while sipping urine through a purple curly straw.
Rose Nylund, is that you?
The wide stand leads me to believe this is actually the Fårfůllnirdóttirsson brýtur endaþarm á spjóti. Very close resemblance though, I can understand the confusion.
Yes, the usage technique varies among different Viking clans. Decades of study required, unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be) there’s no living masters of their use.
What?!
Why would they torture rocks? I cannot imagine they would feel it.
Bro that rock's living out a midlife crisis and a Smashing Pumpkins lyric at the same time.
Someone will say that this rock cannot be paved.
I’ve been crying for days in this hole in my heart.
maybe it was a jank-ified base for something and the rock was a counterweight for the top
Get outta here with your sensible, logical thinking.
I like the idea of a jailed rock better.
Jailhouse rock! 🎸
House Rock Jail!!
you’re right: it’s rock jail
Hmm, interesting, but nah, imma go with lifetime game of “the floor is lava” with the ordinary looking rock.
Christmas tree stand?
I think yours is the best guess.
Stone covered in blood: zombies (pub still open)
Go to the Winchester, have a pint, wait for this whole thing to blow over.
Shawn of the dead type shit
I think those are usually suspended in the air, on a chain or rope or something, so it can show wind, or whatever.
Edit: my theory is that it's a Christian thing https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/s/ew7njRTkpz. But the stone simply being a weight is also very plausible.
Original post title was too much of a joke for the moderators. “ rock at my grandparents house was doomed to never touch the ground again”. I’m not sure what it did to deserve this, I can only imagine grave crimes against humanity.
Wait until it gets too many upvotes, at which point they'll delete it because the post transcends from 'mildly interesting' into 'interesting'. BTDT.
I believe it. Happened to me in a different sub yesterday. Post went from funny to too funny. Too many upvotes for my first post I guess? They locked it also because people kept upvoting it. Isn't organic engagement good for subs?
There is nothing organic about this site or any site that uses algorithm based content direction. When you are on the front page, the posts you see aren’t random or posts that are actually the most popular of all posts. They are the posts that meet certain metrics based on your browsing history. Spend the day looking up Ireland and suddenly you will start seeing more Ireland oriented posts.
The point is that people upvoting a post they like in a community is good for the community itself. I dont understand MODs deleting and locking a post that has 15K upvotes in less than 5 hours.
The algorithm finalizing the # of upvotes based on all the secret factors is a whole other topic.
Yeah or be me and start having serious discussions with my SO about getting a dog and suddenly my Reddit front page goes from cats to dogs.
How does that make sense though? I'd imagine if this blows up that would mean many people find this mildly interesting, not that it went from mildly interesting to interesting.
It’s a very rocky road to get a post online…. showing myself out
Happened on my first post too. The mods here are weird about it.
For the crime of a split infinitive?
There's an immortal snail in the center of the rock
Former murder weapon! If the Weapon used is incorporated into a structure then it's difficult to prove that it was used to kill someone.
4 more legs and it will be an indoor rock spider.
Sorry I'm much more than mildly interested at the lost story of the caged rock.
Free the Rock....Free the Rock.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can’t lose
Or must not be loosed.
Damn, what’s its crime?
Someone probably stubbed their toe in it one time too many.
Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal!?
Wonder whose soul is trapped in that rock?
is this art?
What's on the other end of the rebar?
Just a regular severed human head, nothing special
Nothing surprisingly
My first thought the rock was meant to act like an anchor so it didn't topple but I still can't think what it would be used for lol
Maybe it was meant to keep an outdoor umbrella from tipping?
Yeah maybe if it's one of those little cocktail umbrellas
Emergency zombie apocalypse melee weapon?
I like the way you think
Perhaps the spindle arms to make it a coat hanger have been lost? It's possible they would have the coat hooks welded to a nut with a set screw and it simply got lost at some point.
I assume this is some stand for something ... My grandpa would have totally done something like this to make a sign to sell something, or maybe hold something... Is there anything that looks like it would just slide over the re bar around there?
After reading all the comments. There’s either a snail inside or something bad will happen if it is let out, and yes it whispers quietly when you walk by.
It looks like a balast stone ( weight) to keep like a floor lamp or something like it to keep it from falling over.
4 billion years old stone laughs at your feeble able attempt to imprisone it.
it has time on its side and knows the weak metal binding it will only be a blink of time compared to its eternity of stonyness.
It knows what it did wrong.
Despite all its rage, it’s still just a rock in a cage
The Lore must be revealed.
Why?
It’s an SCP, better keep it contained. If the rock touches the ground who knows what could happen
Why has this rock been put in jail 🤣
Floor is lava champion of the century!
What... what did the rock do?
It knows what it did
It's actually believed to ward off evil spirits; old settlers thought that placing a rock at the origional ground level created a barrier by "walking through the ground" as the homes were made below that level. Some strange tradition originating in old eastern European tradition and folklore going back as early as the 1300s. If you haven't been attacked by vampires in your home it might be true. However I could just be stoned and made it all up. The chances are about the same.
I’m stoned and you absolutely had me going. I read a lot of folklore. That shit sounds totally plausible.
The rock knows what it did.
"Oh, that? Grandma stubbed her toe on that rock 20 years ago, so grandpa put it in air jail"
OP discovering that their grandparents were SCP personnel in charge of the SCP: tiny meteor. If it touches the ground from any distance, it will immediately cause cataclysmic meteor impact
This needs to be part of a story.
The rock is the prison cell of Sha'tala. If it ever comes into contact with Terra firma it shall unleash the fury of a 20,000 year old ancient deity that has been imprisoned for millennia!
He was locked away by the ancient Song Chi people in the fringes of Mongolia. They are not remembered to this day due to the erasure of their history following the war with Sha'tala. The only way to stop him/ her (it's an Omni sexual deity) was by the entire community, save one brave blacksmith to combine their essence to produce a stone of such high quality and purity that it could contain the vengeful Spirit.
The Blacksmith then forged this prison into the iron constraints you see here. With his final hammer blow he lost consciousness, tumbling into the fires of his own forge. With his death, came the end of this once great people, but they had accomplished their mission. They had protected the Earth from the machinations of Sha'tala. At least for now.
Years later, a weary traveler found the prison stone with a note saying, "Protect this stone with your life, for if it should ever touch the ground, the ground will boil as lava, and the wrath of the immortals shall fall upon you, and all you love."
As such, it has been passed from family member to family member, always with the same dire warning. Until the most recent generation.
OPs grandparents were too busy ruining the housing market, and complaining about millennials to remember the danger which they held, so they allowed it to rest in their garage, and when they passed it was given to OP, but with no mention of the warning.
Now the question is, are we in good hands? Or will OP reset the world by bringing forth the deity and destroying all life upon Earth? (The plus side is that real estate costs will take a nose dive.)
More like 石’tala, am I right?
Uhhh, sure?
Kinky
That’s the biggest spider I’ve ever seen. NEVER EVER REMOVE THAT ROCK.
Standing bird feeder pole.
Why am I now feeling sorry for the rock?
This was once a pet rock. People can be so cruel.
Rock and ball torture
that rock will outlast the metalwork. stay tough, rock!
It will outlast the iron. Give it time.
The rock will outlast us all. One day, long from now, he will touch the ground once again. I, for one, am glad I won't be around to feel his wrath.
So what kind of crime did the fae inside it commit and what will happen when it finally feels the cold embrace of earth once again?
Just asking bc this writer’s block is baaaaaaaaaad 😭
Why?
Geologist here! The steel or iron will rust faster then the rock so rock will be free in a few eons :)
Whatd he do to go to rock jail?
Never ever let it touch the ground. For generations.
For the first time in my life I feel sorry for a rock. Pft.
What was the crime?
This is something I'd see in one of those weird late night cable auction shows.
Item #283794 The Lonely Stone
"A stone contained within a steel apparatus that prevents it from touching flat ground ever again."
Never say never. Eventually it’s steel cage will rust through and the rock again will once again be grounded.
That rock will outlive the iron holding it. It’s a lesson of persistence.
This is some Old Testament shit, right here.
Rock in the iron mask
Don't worry, the metal cage is temporary and the rock will still be laughing in 300 million years
Like...tilt it on its side, see if it touches the ground, and report back on the results. Just turned 60. As far as I can recall, im calling that an extremely condensed version of the scientific process.
The rock knows what it did.
What did the rock do to deserve such a fate
This is like the Greek torture of Tantalus except for a rock.
Tantalus stood in chest deep water stricken with thirst. Also while starving with food just out of reach.
The food and water would recede or rise when he tried to reach either.
For the rock the ground is always there.....mocking him. - Werner Herzog
That's clearly a weather rock. It's dry so it is not raining.
Are we torturing the rock?
They had a custom Festivus pole!!!
Never seen a rock cage but I've heard of a co... Wait nvm
The metal will rust. The rock will fall and touch the earth again. Persistence and strength will overcome man's feeble attempt to prevent the inevitable.
Your grandparents are into BDSM lol
The paper and the scissors caught it cheating.
Is their a snail inside the rock by any chance?
The rock has done no crime. Release it at once!
Is your lineage German? This is an old lower German superstition/aberglaube for prosperity. It is called "Stein liegt nicht auf dem Boden." It derives from a Prussian fairytale from the 1500's, I think, involving a witch and a golem. Something to do with night visits and stories coming to life, but don't let this distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table. I miss shittymorph ... I'm just not as good.
I enjoyed it… but you might gat a copyright violation from shittymorph.
For the love of god, please don't let it touch the ground, this year has been rough enough. Don't unleash the curse!
That’s what they would attach the “yard sale” sign to
Put a bird feeder on top,set it out in the yard. Rock can look longingly at the ground.
Ungrounded For Life
Make it a mic stand
The rock will last much longer than the metal cage and will so inevitably return to its right place on the ground.
Sounding in the end of days.
I think they call that a catheter
Take my angrery updoot
Are we not doing phrasing anymore?
Id give that cage no more than 100 years. Depending on the environment it could be gone in 20-30
How long do you think until the end of days?
How about friday?
Thursday sounds better, I never could get the hang of Thursdays anyway
