It’s NOT a lubricant. Literally “water displacement 40”. It’s an anti-rust thing. Plastic on metal does not give us rust.

WD40_UK

While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is actually a unique blend of lubricants.

Our product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.

It’s a common myth that it’s not a lubricant!

I had a problem with mice in the garden once, and a friend told me to spray WD40 everywhere, so I did.

It didn't work, but at least the mice stopped squeaking..

Reminds of that king of the hill skit where Hank pills out a can of WD40 and cannot open the lid, so he pulls out a smaller can from his hip and uses that to open the bigger can.

Timeless classic

Visible-Stress-3667

Not a first. A lot of industrial places (like mines and mills) will have wd 40 in vending machines

etotheapplepi

Mine owner didn't budget for a few cans of wd40.

Mine owner pro tip: buy a vending machine and stock it with wd40 to earn back some of the wages you were forced to pay

Visible-Stress-3667

Lmao, you don't pay. It's just to keep people from overusing and/or stealing. Some companies can be overly stingy though. You "buy" things with your employee card. Its also a pretty convenient way to get certain work supplies without having to bother the people in the warehouse.

matthew2989

Dual duty, stops abuse and helps with inventory tracking. We have the same type of system for our cutting inserts, collets, taps and solid carbide tooling etc. Ours is only for inventory management anyways but for larger workplaces i can certainly see theft being a problem.

jeffnnc

Yes. Fastenal has been putting WD40 in their vending machines for several years. Maybe this is the first WD40 only vending machine.

When I went to trade school for automotive we had a vending machine with WD 40 in it but this is next level.

domesticatedprimate

I speak and read Japanese and the language on the machine is not Japanese, so I assume it's Chinese. My guess is Taiwan because I can't imagine Line, a Japanese social media platform, is popular in mainland China. I could be wrong.

Ryan_225

Yes, you are right. Line is the most popular messaging app in Taiwan

domesticatedprimate

Who knew! I live in Japan where I use LINE myself (all-caps is a hallmark of English words in Japanese! lol) and it seems like such a culturally Japan-specific platform that I honestly never expected it to take off anywhere else.

Japan has a vending machine for everything.

domesticatedprimate

It's not Japan (I speak/read Japanese). Somewhere Chinese. My guess is Taiwan because I didn't think they used Line (Japanese social media) in mainland China.

obviouslypineapple

You're probably right. It's not using Simplified script. Under the bill receptacle I think I see NT which would indicate its Taiwanese currency too.

LukeSkyWRx

It’s not a lubricant, let’s all say it together.

CaptainPunisher

It's a lubricant. It's just a shitty lubricant that will dry up quickly and see the same problem arise soon.

WD-40 is good for breaking stuff free initially. After it's loosened up, clean the WD-40 away and use a proper lubricant: oil, silicone spray, grease, Teflon spray, ... Definitely use something better than standard WD-40 on fast moving chains and gears.

LukeSkyWRx

It is a water displacement system, basically a corrosion inhibitor, and the low surface tension makes it a nice penetrant oil.

Too thin to be a good lubricant.

CaptainPunisher

I know what it is and what it does, but it IS a lubricant. For that matter, water is also a lubricant. But, like I said earlier, it's not a GOOD lubricant, and we agree on this.

lawnmowertoad

How often should I re-grease my nipples?

CaptainPunisher

Before and after marathons, when you notice them starting to get dry, and whenever you cook bacon (wait until it cools before applying grease).

lawnmowertoad

WD= Water Displacement

rlnrlnrln

The W in 10W-40 motor oil means "Winter", it doesn't mean it's not a lubricant.

WD-40 is not a good lubricant for long-term use, though. Neither is water or bacon grease.

LukeSkyWRx

It was designed specifically to displace water for electronics I believe.

Vending machine + Line QR code points out it being in Japan. And of course Japan has vending machine for everything.

domesticatedprimate

Line is indeed a Japanese social media platform but the language on the vending machine is Chinese, so it's not Japan. Line is also used outside Japan.

CatimusPrime123

Now they need rows for the following: Hand Cleaner, hand wipes, universal-fit disposable gloves, rectangular dust masks, a basic multitool, a small flashlight with a AA battery, a small pack of paper towels, and some basic safety goggles.

BenjiSBRK

Japanese people definitely have weird beverages taste

Japanese Chinese. The language on the vending machine is Chinese.

BenjiSBRK

Damn, my bad. I didn't look closely enough.

Aren't there katakanas though, at the bottom right ?

domesticatedprimate

There are no Katakana anywhere on the machine, though some of the Chinese characters may look similar because Katakana and Hiragana were originally based on them.

This is actually kinda cool but where would you actually have something like this? If I go to the hardware store for some WD-40 I’d be kinda pissed if they had this instead of it just on the shelf. Especially if this thing ate my money & didn’t expel the product. Like most vending machines. I take it back. This would SUCK!

I remember being in Germany in the late 80s early 90s and some of the train stations literally had vending machines with Seiko watches in them you put your money in and the watch was dispensed out. It was wild.

[Plumbing parts] is the vending machine that needs to be made. I busted an angle stop under my kitchen sink on Sunday afternoon. All the hardware stored were closed until Monday morning. I had to shut off the main and have no water until I could buy the replacement. If there were a plumbing vending machine, I would have gladly paid double to fix his sooner.
