This highway used to have a 420km marker, but it kept getting stolen, so they changed it to 419.9km

Thats even more unique, wouldnt that be more likely to be stolen? I know i'd want one.

Of course you need to know when you are exactly 420km from ... something.

If you have been driving at 110kmh for like 4 hours, it is always good to see "Look we are 420km from something!".

Gnomio1

I’d be very pissed that my speedometer read 110 km/h but after 4 hours I had only travelled 420 km, and not 440 km.

WiseDirt

That'll happen if you put smaller tires on your vehicle without recalibrating the speedometer. Smaller tires means each wheel has to make a larger number of rotations to cover the same distance. Your car will think it's travelling at 110 kph, but really you might only be doing 105. This will also make your car think you drove further than you actually did and throw off your odometer readings.

That's rounding errors 4 u!!!

Captain_no_Hindsight

Most speedometers are very optimistic. Check your GPS next time you drive. The speedometer is probably reading 5% to 10% more than you are actually driving.

On the other hand. If it happened to read too slowly, there would be a massive class action lawsuit against the car manufacturer for speeding tickets.

On the US interstate system, the mileage is marked within each state. The southern end and the eastern end are the zero point.

This particular highway is in the state of Colorado, and this sign is 420 miles (actually 419.9 miles) from the eastern border. Colorado had the same problem and came up with the same solution. But we use miles, not kilometers.

TenaciousLilMonkey

Isn’t the western end the zero point.

It’s the start of the highway, and is how you tell someone exactly what part of a highway you’re stopped at.

Yeah they just changed the group of people that is going to steal the sign from potheads to road sign enthusiasts. It’s still going to get stolen regardless.

  1. Set up a vending machine instead of the signpost with signs inside.

  2. Paint 420 on the side of the machine.

  3. Profit?

Fucking dumb that it was such a problem. Now I'm wondering how any road signs stay up for Interstate 69.

I live between exit 68 and exit 69. My brother stole the mile marker for 69 when we were a kid. I bet I saw that mile marker vanish a few dozen times and they used better bolts to just have the metal pole it was on cut off.

I'm from Europe and I had no idea that 420 is reference to cannabis culture. Now I get it why that marker was stolen. Well... I'm also old fart.

In the town I grew up in there was a Mary Jane Ln street… so of course me and my friends yoinked it multiple times. Then the town got wise and put the street sign at the very top of the of the street light pole. Needless to say that challenge was accepted. Don’t know what eventually happened to mine, but I hung it proudly in my room for a few years as a younger rascal.

I love in Canada by the American border, and the highway that goes to the border I'm Niagara falls is literally called hwy 420. As you approach the border there's TONS of signs warning drivers to get off the highway before stuck at the border if you have weed.

Lots of pple get stuck on it and end up getting busted at the border cuz they missed the last exit or turn around.

Can't apply rules in that 0.1 space

Unless they moved the sign 0.1km, they should’ve placed a vinculum above the 9.

Same thing happened with the 420 mile marker here in Colorado.

OutdoorAdventurer12

Something similar happened with the km marker 666 on highway 401 near Mallorytown, ON but I'm not sure if it was being stolen or religious folks were making a big deal of it lol.

How is this new sign not even more probable of being stolen?

Should have used a mile marker instead of km.

how did they notice it was stolen the first time? Or the second time, or even the third time for that matter... who pays that close attention to mile markers?
