Nikola Jokic has informed the Nuggets he will not sign a contract extension this offseason, team sources told The Denver Post, as the three-time MVP intends to wait until next summer to engage in contract talks.

Jokic has a minimum of two years remaining on his current supermax contract, as well as a player option for the 2027-28 season. Tuesday was the first day he was eligible for an extension that would add up to three years and $212 million to that deal.

When the athleticism doesn’t pop out on screen (like with guys like Wall, Westbrook, Rose), you can usually get back to pre injury form without missing a step.

It's actually the opposite. The guys who have an abundance of athleticism are the ones who can afford to lose it. Now Jokic is an outlier, but these guys who come into the league solely based on skill, once they lose a touch of their athleticism find their way out of the league.

frick224
:phx-4: Suns

Yeah, usually with super skilled but unathletic guards especially, once they lose some athleticism they can't get separation any more.

But like KD, I think Jokic is big enough that even if he loses athleticism, he can shoot over guys and see everything.

Mobile-Entertainer60
:okc-3: Thunder

It's the "get more guaranteed years on the books right now vs an extra guaranteed year later in his career" decision. If he sees himself playing until age 38 or older, signing now was the smarter decision because of how the extensions would line up with the over-38 rule, but it's not some humongous blunder to pass on an extension this year.

chizzmaster
:den-3: Nuggets

NBA contracts are a fucking mystery to me, this shit is way too confusing

Mobile-Entertainer60
:okc-3: Thunder

Jokic is extension eligible because it's been 3 years since his signed his current supermax extension. The maximum extension years is (6- years left on current contract). He currently has 3 years left, including a player option. If he signs this year, he converts his 2027-28 player option year to a guaranteed year, plus 2 more years, so the contract would run through 2029-30. By not signing this year, he will still be eligible to sign an extension next summer which could add 4 years instead of 3 (because he has one fewer year left on the existing contract). Or he could wait all the way to just before he has to decide on his player option in 2027 to sign a 5 year extension. The numbers would look bigger the longer he waits, but that only matters if he doesn't get another contract afterwards.

The over-38 rule is to close a loophole that allowed teams to pay players into retirement as a way to circumvent the salary cap. If a player turns 38 by the beginning of the season (October 1), that contract year counts for the over-38 rule. Contract lengths are truncated to 3 years (including existing+extension years) once a player is age 38+; the Lakers couldn't sign Lebron to a 5 year deal this year even if they wanted to, and Paul George was up for grabs last year because a 5 year contract from the Clippers would have fallen afoul of the over-38 rule. For Jokic, he turns 38 in February of 2033, so the 2033-24 season is the first year the over-38 rule applies to him.

If the most important thing to Jokic is to keep drawing a max salary for as many years as possible, signing this year was the way to go. An extension this year would have guaranteed him through his age-35 season, while ensuring he'd be extension-eligible in 2028. At that point, he could sign another 3 year extension that would take him through his age-38 season. By waiting, he'll only be able to sign a 2 year extension in 2028, because a 3 year extension would mean a 5 year contract+age 38 rule, which is a no-go.

I'm not exactly sure why Jokic wants to wait. I doubt it's because he wants to leave, and I doubt it's because his agents don't know about the over-38 rule. Maybe he just wants to wait and see how things transpire before making a committment.

the over 38 rule was a good point by OP, hadnt thought of that

basically its a provision to prevent teams from rigging contracts for old players, because you could give them a cheaper long-term deal (ie 4yr/40m instead of 2yr/40 market rate) knowing they were gonna retire a couple years into the contract — and somehow still collect the salary post-retirement

thats where it gets a little weird bc the assumption is that the player would still get to keep their salary after retiring. but maybe if the player was forced to medically retire (ie too old to play), that would be a example

but what the Over 38 rule does is frontload the initial years of the contract — before the player turns 38 — with the full salary (ie a 4 yr/40m deal, would be $40m across the 1st 3 years, $0 in the 4th year). that way if a player retires in year 4, theres no cap loophole, all the money got paid out prior.

so for a player like Jokic, that would decimate his team's cap if he's still collecting 35% of the cap supermaxes during the extension that would take him over the age of 38 after this upcoming extension. because, for example, a 4 year max would be frontloaded over the first 3 years (or up until he turns 38), instead of across 4.

Jordan

Castod28183

Definitely Jordan. Magic and Bird made the NBA relevant, Jordan made it a global phenomenon. Curry made the Warriors ownership tons of money, Jordan made EVERY team owner tons of money. That's why the Bulls paid him $30 mil when the highest paid players in the league were making $10-15 mil.

In 96-97 Jordan was making more than 50% of the Bulls ENTIRE payroll. He made more than every other player on the team combined. His salary that year was equal to the ENTIRE payroll of the 8th highest payroll in the league.

Going by that last stat, that would be equal to one player making $228,000,000 just for the 25-26 season.

fii0

So we got 228/82 = 2.78... Imagine playing one early regular season game of basketball, getting off the court, and getting handed roughly $2.7M

Even going by the 50% of the Bulls payroll, the Bulls were obviously the highest payroll in 97, that would be the equivalent of $132 mil...Or going by 2x the next highest player in 97 that would be equivalent to 118 million. That way, if he chooses to retire from MLB and dedicate his time to his wife and Ohtani Jr., he will be relaxing at home and collecting $68M/year for the next 10 years.

I unironically think that just because Jokic also plays League of Legends, he isn't above trying out Uma Musume. I'd fucking hold out too for a super duper max if I see how fucking hilarious the horse girls in that game are.

We can’t possibly have Jokic.

We don’t have enough to pay for my ideal lineup in 2027: 1 Luka - 2 Wemby - 3 Jokic - 4 Giannis - 5 Ayton. 😗

Disastrous-Ad2800

not to mention legitimizing trading away your star player and getting the No.1 pick as compensation from the NBA.... funny how that used to be a conspiracy theory, now it's the new normal....

  1. Trade Reaves to OKC for 2 Nuggets picks
  2. In 2026 offseason, offer 5 first round picks for Jokic (2 Nuggets picks, 3 Lakers picks) Have Luka tamper with Jokic so that he makes the Lakers his preferred 2027 destination, so other teams don't beat that offer.

when will Shams start posting about Jokic “considering his options”?

United_Equipment4398

The best is this year when Sham's said that he specifically said "for the FIRST TIME he is considering his options." So if that is true it means the 1000's of speculative "reports" that were previously on ESPN for the past decade were all false, or he is wrong this time or a combination of the two.

OKC has a horse track just 10 minutes from the Arena, & I just heard that OKC Nikola said your horses are slow. OKC will trade him & 50% stake in Remington Park.

As a free agent, he can sign an extra year with the nuggets compared to signing with other teams under the Bird rights rule, and he will also have the advantage of higher salary cap.
