Going to be honest here, I would have been shocked if it wasn’t inhumane. That would have been the newsworthy and surprising title.

Yeah, we all saw the tours. Inhumanity was the selling point. Ghouls.

The place they're calling Alligator Alcatraz with the stated fantasy of walking inmates off a plank into the swamp to be eaten isn't meeting our humanity standards??

Next you'll tell me that guns are meant to shoot things like some kind of socialist

I didn't see a water treatment plant onsite. One can only imagine where the waste water is drained. When will Florida environmental groups file a lawsuit?

cdbutts

I live there, there are very few people that give a shit about the environment. No one recycles, no deposit on cans or bottles, bars and restaurants just throw them in the garbage. The government releases water from Lake O that is contaminated by big sugar into the local estuaries, no emissions standards for vehicles, I could go on and on. There are people and groups that do care, and do good work, but it’s an uphill battle when the state government doesn’t give a damn about the environment.

The part that's surprising is that they were able to report it so quickly.

Tents and cages in a swamp. During hurricane season. Inhumane barely scratches the surface.

Fandango_Jones

Apparently its an accident if someone dies by totally predictable natural disasters. Unless you setup camp in an empty riverbed while rain is in the forecast. Thats a tragedy.

AktionMusic

Their next camp will be in a Texas floodplain, watch.

FEMA has the flood data and maps of all of the low areas. They know exactly where it is most dangerous to build.

ledfrisby

Of course, that will help them with their scheme to drain the operation funds from FEMA. (source)

It will cost Florida approximately $450 million to run the facility for one year, according officials.

Florida will submit reimbursement requests to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), according to DHS which said FEMA has roughly $625 million in Shelter and Services Program funds that can be allocated for this effort.

NickDerpkins

It is so appalling that emergency aid for sheltering meant for when people lose their homes is instead being used to rip people out of their homes.

ice-eight

450 million for a series of tents and chain link fences that is similar to what most music festivals construct in like a week. Not even the whole festival, just like the badge pickup and merch stand and maybe some of the food stalls. For 450 million dollars.

bobandgeorge

$450 million that was supposed to be used to help Floridians get shelter after our homes get wrecked by hurricanes. Wouldn't be the first time this governor stole money that was meant for us.

SkolVandals

Oh so this is one of the FEMA camps they lost their minds about under Obama. As usual, it's just more projection.

wahoozerman

I hate this as much as the next guy, but we should be accurate about facts, so I am adding more info here. The Shelter and Services program is funding that comes from DHS's budget and is administered by FEMA. It is specifically allocated by congress to provide housing and other services to immigrants requesting asylum. This is not FEMA disaster relief money and spending it on that would be illegal. FEMA is only involved because of their expertise and contacts with local organizations who provide these services. (Which is, apparently, no longer needed because we're going to just stuff them into inhumane government detention camps in swamps.)

Specifically, this is the program the Republicans were bitching about under the Biden administration that was placing asylum seekers in hotel rooms, instead of being spent on hurricane relief after Helene.

They didn't put it in a swamp to keep people in. They put it in a swamp to keep people out. Namely media, lawyers, rights advocates.

It's in the Everglades to keep heat off the eventual atrocities that will occur.

holystuff28

I think another inescapable horror is that leaving the lights on 24 hours is DEVASTATING to the local ecosystem. The lights are so bright they can be seen from 15 miles away. It's so desperately sad that they are doing this in an incredibly fragile ecosystem. It's torture to the individuals caged their and the animals that live nearby.

It’s also psychological torture for the people being kept here. It means extreme sleep deprivation.

I’m sure there’s no temperature control in that giant tin warehouse. Probably be 110 with 120% humidity on a good day. Maybe the goal is for occupants of the concentration camp to request slavery just to get out of hell

This is a full-on concentration camp and everyone fucking knows it: even the vendors supplying services and materials are literally masking over their identifying marks and logos because they know they’re basically supplying a modern concentration camp on U.S. soil.

Too inconvenient, organizing is socialism and maybe complaining loud enough will inspire someone else to do something.

The Portland sub is a great example. Everyone cheering on the grandma's and toddlers at the No Kings demonstration but talking shit about all the people who were a mile away at the ICE detention center saying they deserved to be arrested. The one thing I was allowed to have in Jail was a "Religious item" I had on prayer beads at the time of my arrest and they asked if I used them to pray. I said no. I could have kept them.

This is a blatant erasure of natural human rights

Edit: it seems that suggesting humans have the natural right to food, water, and the right to believe what they want in terms of religion, has made a bunch of people upset. Shocking.

this reads like an excerpt from a letter that escaped Auschwitz.

Like actually, I don't think there's a fundamental difference here.

These camps will be swept away in hurricanes, and there will be a severely defunded FEMA trying to save them. FEMA was defunded by the administration who built the concentration camp in a hurricane-prone swamp. This all looks incredibly intentional.

Post hurricane, they will rebuild the facilities exactly where they stood. literal rinse, repeat until hurricane season is over.

Mark my words: It won't be gas chambers they'll use for this genocide. It will be 'unpreventable natural disasters' and 'we did everything we could to save the prisoners, but they're prisoners, so do they really deserve saving compared to others trapped by the hurricanes?'.

BadWolf013

I mean, they already did that in New Orleans during Katrina. Over 600 inmates were abandoned in the prisons throughout the city and left to die or starve in the aftermath.

Here are some testimonials from inmates who actually survived. It is amazing that they are still here to tell their stories.

How is that possible? It's been open for literally a week. This would imply to me they sourced maggots to intentionally make the food unpalatable.

“I told you once that I was searching for the nature of evil. I think I’ve come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants. A genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.” ― G. M. Gilbert

There’s a guy I like on TikTok named Jesse Crosson who was in prison for almost twenty years before he received clemency, and he spent the last few months of his time before that still in prison during Covid. He said once a very popular book in his prison, and I guess by extension a lot of American prisons, is Stephen King’s “The Stand.” He said it’s for one image in particular: all the CO’s and administrators die because of the superflu which leaves the prisoners to starve to death in their cells. During Covid, Jesse said there was real panic they’d be left to rot there.

I remember hearing that and despite hating the prisons in this country, I just couldn’t ever believe something like that would ever happen. We wouldn’t let it happen. We’re better than that.

Alligator Auschwitz is designed to fail, literally. A hurricane will annihilate this place. It’s designed to massacre people through whatever ancillary and extrajudicial systems they can think of to kill others. They’ll leave them there the moment they can. Jesse and the prisoners got it better than us: they know what these authority figures will do if given the chance. They’ll leave them all to die.

I can almost guarantee if this place falls because of hurricanes, conservatives are gonna say “it’s sad but they wouldn’t have died if they were in their own country”

dstroyer123

The irony, blaming God for a flood that killed mostly "white evangelical children". Like by their own standards if God uses disasters as "punishment" against sin, then what does that say about what evangelicals are doing? But no, these people refuse to think critically about their own beliefs.

This is what happens when so many millions of people give their hearts and minds to a political party that is lying to them constantly for 50 years. This started decades ago and the GOP has a voter base that has descended right down into hell for them. All while claiming they’re 100% righteous. It’s a really ghastly thing to bear witness to, that these people can simultaneously be so EVIL, while claiming they are perfectly GOOD.
