Xu’s lawyer said on Tuesday that he is a victim of mistaken identity, that his surname is quite common in China and that his mobile phone had been stolen in 2020. The 33-year-old IT manager at a Shanghai company appeared on Tuesday before an appeals court in Milan, which will decide whether to send him to the United States. The man was arrested last week after he arrived at Milan’s Malpensa airport for a holiday in Italy with his wife.

With this administration I honestly have doubts that this is the right Chinese guy.

Ah yes the classic deception of this Chinese guy and that Chinese guy.

Yeah, the fact that any news outlet is running anything they say as if it was back is absolute journalistic malpractice.

The DOJ? This same one that said there isn't any Epstein files? Laughable murica, very laughable

I’m sure China has the kind of government that just lets its contracted hackers freely go on random holidays to Europe… they totally don’t lock down their passports and just let them leave the country at will… right?

yes, I would assume high-demand positions of importance probably result in greater renumeration, since that's pretty standard in literally every market economy.

I'm more interested in what a 'state-sponsored contract hacker' is. a member of a cyber warfare unit? someone related to an intelligence agency? a guy who works in IT? 'state-sponsored' is such a meaningless term, since it literally can mean apply to any organization or individual that's paid in any part, platformed, or just supported by the government. there's a big difference between a government worker, who is directed entirely as policy of the state, and a guy who works at a place that receives government funds for separate functions.

China isn't North Korea. Also, pro-China downvote brigade found out that there are other subreddits beside /r/worldnews apparently.

I think just seeing the word China is prob enough to send some old people spiraling. They instantly start shaking and foaming at the mouth.

That’s crazy. If the charges are true, it just shows how far these state-backed groups are willing to go—even targeting vaccine research during a global crisis. But if it’s a case of mistaken identity like his lawyer says, that’s a whole other problem. Either way, this is gonna get messy between the U.S., China, and Italy.

hmm, not really, just another same old story of spy/prisoner exchange, there are plenty of American/Italy guys in China to make the trade tbh.

Go look up yanjun xu case, it's just the same old game played all these years.

"Global crackdown" sounds a bit hyperbolic for the arrest of a single individual.
