I thought it was cool listening to the podcast when he said he grew up playing on relatively bad teams/underdogs so he could show everyone how good he was
Me but those teams are me
You're the kind of guy that makes other people look good.
Yeah and you’re a 49ers fan 😎 💥
As an ISU fan it was incredibly clear how great he was. Dude came in to one of the consistently bad teams in the Big 12 and gave us 4 amazing seasons with nothing but some great RBs and a pile of scrap.
WVU fan — IIRC he demolished them most or all of the time
There was a reason many of the other Big 12 teams started calling him Corn Jesus.
i am a fan of one of those big 12 teams, tcu, and ive never heard him called that. and based on google it looks like it had nothing to do his actual play but rather a terrible commercial he once did.
i do remember him having one of the worst interceptions ive ever seen in a game against us
Hey we had solid receivers, too.
Our O-line was garbage. But don't disrespect Butler and co.
So nothings really changed for him in the nfl then, got it
Nearly got Matt Campbell a tippy top tier college job. Which he apparently doesn't want, but still.
When he played Oregon in a bowl game I knew he was a baller.
As someone who never follows college, do you happen to know why he went last then? Wouldn't the fact he managed to do something with nothing at least get him drafted in the middle rounds? Was it because he's not necessarily that athletic? I can't imagine that his short area quickness and how he escapes the pocket to extend plays as well as how well he reads the field wouldn't help his case.
You can never know for sure, GMs don't exactly publicly throw out their reasonings for passing on players...
But from a quick search it looks like his measurables were pretty dang small for a QB and the success he had was in the Big 12, not the most competitive conference with really OU, TX, and occasionally OSU being the only real competition most years.
But I'm not a big draft guy, so maybe there's other reasons people talk about... My answer here was based on like 5 minutes of searching on Google.
I’d guess it had to do with the fact that he would make risky throws wayyy more often in college, as if pressing and not staying in rhythm. I think he felt he had to try and do more when the team was at a disadvantage, so that could be part of it.
People say he got drafted into the perfect situation because when he got here the 49ers were basically built around the QB to win now. So “all” he had to do was operate the offense efficiently, (which is still extremely difficult as we’ve seen QBs like Mullens, Beathard, and Lance fail to do so). Shortly after he took over he was able to elevate the offense while staying in rhythm and not taking unnecessary chances. I also think Kyle and our previous QB coach Brian Griese really schooled him on a lot of things during his rookie year.
Brock also credits being able to practice against guys like Bosa and Warner as being huge for his NFL development.
not my favorite website, but they did get this one right; proper summary and quote along with a link to interview.
got to give credit to Brock; talented, resilient, plus he's media-trained in the "tell them nothing for 2 hours" school.
Yeah I've been a fan since he was at Iowa State. Matt Campbell is not only a great coach, but a high-character leader of men.
Notable today as he talked about how about 20 of our guys got better NIL offers and chose to stay and play at ISU. Love what he's done with the program
Matt Campbell has Bill Snyder potential.
Is it a good interview?
From someone who never listens to this podcast, it was fine. Nice to have on while doing chores around the house or walking the dog. There are a few funny moments in it but it’s the same old basic Brock (not derogatory)
The podcast is called "Bussin`with the Boys" that should answer your question lol
Yeah fuck actual football players talking about football where’s my talking heads that haven’t played a competitive sport since they were on the highschool JV team
For one, Taylor Lewan is a certified piece of shit
Gee I don’t think that’s what the fuck we’re talking about rn but let’s change the subject I guess lmao
I will not stand for this Trey Lance erasure
Who?
The Chargers QB3
TIL Trey Lance is on the Chargers
The Cowboys let him walk in free agency and traded for Joe Milton. Now he's behind Herbert and Heinicke on the Chargers.
What happens when you name your kid Trey
Never heard of him.
Gotta be written down to get erased
damn
yup... i own 2 Jim Druckenmiller jerseys & only wear them when we play Dallas; we're undefeated esp in the playoffs.
i own 2 Jim Druckenmiller jerseys
But… why?
What else is he gonna wear when Druckenmiller jersey #1 is dirty?
Wear a Dana Stubblefield or Justin Tucker jersey?
thank you.
Trey Lance has such a weird career arc. Since high school, he's thrown fewer passes in live games (no pre-season) than Brady did his last year in Tampa. Despite this the 49ers traded 3 first round picks for him, and since then his only real sins we're happening to get hurt on a team that had a 3rd stringer that just so happened to be good enough to get the 49ers to the super bowl, and then getting traded to a team that had a QB that finished 2nd in MVP voting that year.
They see him in practice every day
Wanna see Kellen mond?
Nah not really
Why not?
I see him every day
If I recall correctly Mond threw such a bad interception that Collinsworth said something like “that pass was so bad even your mom would be embarrassed.”
Zimmer was so checked out by then. It was entertaining at least.
One of my favorite all time for coach quotes. I laughed harder because scouting that year I was very down on Mond obviously.
his only real sins we're happening to get hurt
His other sin is that he’s not good at football
Thank you. No idea what kind of narrative dude is spinning in his mind, but it’s complete fan fiction.
Reminds me of that Moneyball quote, “So if he’s a good hitter, why doesn’t he hit good?”
Trey is a nice guy that was drafted 3rd overall, people are going to hand wave away his lack of actual football skill for a long time because of that
Homerism is a hell of a drug. Plenty of Niner fans used to try to convince of what I coined "Schrodinger's Lance". If we never observe him sucking, then he will always exist in a state of pre-success.
Yeah those fans existed, but I was never one of them.
I was willing to believe for his first two seasons that he had tremendous upside, but now he’s entering year five. Dak’s injury last year would have been his perfect opportunity to prove he can be a starter in the NFL. He just isn’t the guy.
Not just niner fans, I got called crazy by Giant fans in 2022 when all I said was trading 3 first for Tray Lance is the biggest draft risk ever. I was told I was crazy because he got traits. Like I did not even say he sucked yet just a risk.
Haha… I forgot about this quote and it’s perfectly applied here
That’s not true. If those were his only sins then he would have started over Cooper Rush last year. But he didn’t so that means he’s still worse than Cooper Rush after four years in the league.
We also saw Trey Lance throw 5 ints in a pre season game
We also saw Jimmy Garoppolo throw 5 consecutive INTs in practice and go to the Superbowl.
Don’t gotta convince me I’m a Trey Lance believer as much as is possible, it’s just you gotta assume the coaches are seeing a lot more than just bad pre season games in the practices. At this point he’d need crazy luck to get another starting chance
Don’t talk about my boy Cooper. He’s trying his best. 🥺
I mean this is true but it’s a little bit of hyperbole.
That’s not Trey Lance’s “only sin,” so to speak. His main one is not being able to grasp NFL level offenses, or being able to read NFL defenses in real time. He just isn’t good enough. I only say this because some people still try to act like he was screwed over in SF, as if he would’ve panned out if he just had a little more time—which is just factually false.
His problem didn’t seem grasping the offense. Based on interviews the team thought he was more than smart enough. But the inability to perform in real time like you said plus the pressure of it all seemed to have gotten to him. He could become a good coach one day though.
NDSU offense was pretty close to a NFL style offense IIRC.
Lance did well at NDSU because the FCS is weak and he was always one of the biggest and strongest players on the field. He tried to truck an NFL defender and was put on his ass immediately and everything went downhill from there. He can't throw with any touch, he can't make decisive reads, and he makes the the wrong decision on read options half the time.
NDSU had a bigger talent advantage than Bama or 90s FSU ever had. From memory the best FCS team he played was like 70 spots lower in Sargins rankings and most over a 100 spots lower.
But the inability to perform in real time
That doesn't make sense. He outproduced Lamar, Hurts, Allen, Fields, etc. throughout the same timeframe at the start of their careers. It's still an incredibly small sample size (the equivalent of 4.5 games), but it still happened.
Lance also got omega fucked by COVID. He had his one good year then COVID hit and NDSU had like one game in the fall then he declared and then they had the rest of their games in the spring. Granted he never should have declared and maybe he could have been something if he declared as a 5th year senior like Nix or Daniels with a boatload of college experience but yeah COVID really fucked him.
It could have hurt his career long term, but it also could have been his saving grace allowing him to declare with one college year and get drafted high rather than have a potentially mediocre college year and being NDSU and all get drafted pretty mid. It at least got him 34 mil.
Yeah really depends on how you view it lol I don't know if I can blame someone for getting 35+ mil and entering "too early". QBs can rise and fall the draft board so insanely quickly - look at Ewers who was projected as top 10 and then dropped to the 7th round. Hell, even Brock Purdy had "first round hype" in 2020 before falling to Mr. Irrelevant.
Honestly, I think its more that I disagree with the people who say that he never should have declared. Do you think that he would have improved in college? I might have thought so before there seemed to be no real improvement with 4 years of NFL coaches.
No fucking way was Ewers projected top 10
Like Purdy, it wasn't directly prior to his eligibility, but there was 100% a time where Ewers was talked about being a high first round pick. The problem lies with him not playing/being as good as he was graded lol. He was losing draft stock value with almost every single game he played lol
Whether he was consensus top 10 projection or just in the 1st round, all I'm saying is that people that say "Lance should have stayed in college" need to remember that Lance's draft stock was never going to be so high again and will have earned him $40M+ over a guy like Ewers will in his career.
Trey outproduced Lamar, Allen, Hurts, Fields, etc. all throughout their first 4.5 games (about as much time as Trey got in SF). You can argue his practice was subpar. You can argue his mechanics weren't perfect. But you can't say he struggled so badly when on the field because he outperformed a lot of similar QBs over their small sample sizes.
And most of that occurred without Kittle or CMC, and with doghoused Aiyuk.
I can't even tell you how many people said something like "as if he would’ve panned out if he just had a little more time—which is just factually false." about Alex Smith.
Did you see them attempt to play him in a live game though?
Yeah all Trey Lance needs is a team where he might be the best starting option. So maybe NYJ? The Toronto Argonauts?
He and James wiseman should start a podcast
What would they call it? The Nah Area?
Mahomes and Allen were raw prospects from a technical standpoint but got by because of work ethic and good coaching allowing them to improve.
There's a parallel universe out there where they both busted and we're watching Anthony Richardson and Trey Lance become great leaders who adapted to the NFL... but it's not this one.
My only argument against Anthony Richardson being the next Josh Allen "he was always a top 10 QB in his class, 4 star recruit, with multiple years of SEC level coaching"
IMO part of the "model" if there will ever be another Josh Allen level of raw ability --> super star is never truly getting the opportunity. I don't think that it's a coincidence that as soon as he got non-JUCO or Mountain West coaching that he started improving. Add in the work ethic involved from starting from nothing... and that's where a lot of the improvement comes from.
Richardson has pretty much always gotten very good coaching with expensive staff and multiple years of being a top QB in his class. I'm mostly just saying - he could/should have improved earlier, if it was going to happen.
Wasn’t Mullen his coach? Say what you will about his head coaching abilities, but the man knows how to run an offense and coach a QB. If Mullen couldn’t get him there, then he’s not getting there.
There is a world of difference between Mahomes/Allen and AR/Lance
Mahomes started 29 games in his 3 seasons. Josh Allen started 32 games in college and 26 for Wyoming.
While AR started just 13 and Lance 17 games.
Game reps matter.
It is way too soon to rule out Anthony Richardson not being able to develop. He's pretty rough around the edges right now but he's only played in 15 games.
IMO the jury is still out on how his work ethic and coaching will help him improve
I don’t think it’s too soon, accuracy is the biggest thing you can’t teach besides physical attributes
That's a bit of a misconception. Accuracy can be fixed through proper fundamentals.
I was so angry at this team when he played his first preseason game. Knew he was going to be not worth it at all. Why the hell did they trade THREE FIRST ROUND PICKS.
Kyle Shanahan arrogance.
I know Falcons fans tend to think Kyle Shanahan is personally responsible for everything wrong with the world, but trying to upgrade the QB position was absolutely the correct move at the time.
Trey Lance happened because Jimmy Garoppolo was good but not great and was a lightning rod for criticism for pretty much his entire tenure with the 49ers. There were endless articles and talking heads saying very pointedly that the 49ers were successful despite him and not because of him.
Whether right or wrong, Jimmy’s injury history didn’t help matters, which created a need for another QB.
Obviously, we picked the wrong QB at the top of the draft and the 49ers brass deserves to catch heat for that, but trying to add a better QB to an already (very) talented roster was absolutely the right call.
In no world is Trey worth what he cost. No world.
Obviously, but you’re saying that with the benefit of hindsight.
Without hindsight it was still a colossally dumb move.
Lance was the least experienced QB ever taken in the 1st round. Literally no QB-needy team has ever taken such a huge risk in the history of the NFL.
Lance started just 2 full seasons at QB in his life, and one of those was in high school. And he was always on the most stacked roster in his division. In college he played on a stacked FCS superteam against defenders that would never sniff an arena league roster. This made him look way better than he was.
Then he sat out a season due to covid. That was also the year NFL teams had the least ability to due in-depth interviews and training sessions due to covid restrictions.
It was the riskiest year to draft a QB, let alone spend three first round picks and a third rounder to take the least experienced 1st round QB ever drafted, who also never played on a team that didn't have a massive talent advantage.
Ok.
Imagine what must’ve been going in York’s head when being told the last pick could be their best QB after giving up so much on Trey.
He was asked about this a lot during media week of SB 58. He seemed to handle it well enough because Kyle believed in Brock, and Jed trusts Kyle.
Huge cock Brock
I’m choosing to believe the only reason this was downvoted is because you got his nickname wrong.
BCB is the preferred nomenclature.
Hey wait a minute backup QBs with huge dongs is our thing
Who cares, tell us what Ja thinks
Win a ring and then he can gloat
Living up to the “slower” part of your username, I see 😂
Read the article and then you can comment
...? What part of this is gloating
The part where you simply don’t read the article and/or know how Purdy acts as a person
He wasn't gloating.
Top Bot Commenter three years running.
A swing and a miss
Apparently going on a podcast is gloating these days
not only did he not gloat, but he’s played well in the playoffs off his relatively small sample size. as good as his skill position players were in 2023, he paired them with a woeful offensive line.
one of the few cases where the QB really wasn't to blame for either of his playoff losses (broken elbow in 2023, broken defense in the SB).
if Kyle ever bothers to assemble a competent O-line, we might have a shot at a ring. BTW i hope he didn't gloat; haven't listened to the whole interview yet, just the relevant parts.
e: typo
Purdy does not gloat in this one bit lol. Idk what the hell the main commenter was trying to say
Eh, the defense did its job in that Super Bowl. Kept Mahomes to one TD in regulation. Not saying it was Purdy who failed by any means, but the defense did enough.
Edit: You all can blame the defense all you want. They kept the Chiefs to under 20 in regulation and got a turnover. The one TD in regulation came off a short field thanks to a special teams screw up. It wasn't them who fumbled in the red zone, muffed a punt, and let Chris Jones right through the O-Line and into Purdy's face on 3rd and goal in overtime.
Facebook-level take.
Is Brock getting canceled for this interview?
The Bots are wild today
You’re telling me lmao
“We never really talked about it” is the most male response to existential career upheaval I’ve ever heard.
"What happened?" "Nothing"
house burned down, wife left, and the dog died
Sounds like a country song
Didn’t talk about his mama or trains.
Or trucks, or prison, or getting drunk.
or mama...
"I was drunk, the day my mom, got out of prison..."
I love David Allan Coe
Or tractors on a dirt road wearing ripped jeans
A dirt road A cold beer A blue jeans A red pickup Rural noun, simple adjective
Was waiting for someone to cite this masterpiece.
Good girl in a straw hat
With her arms out in a corn field
That is a scarecrow
Thought that was a human woman, sorry
Not quite that extreme, but I was recently visiting with a good friend and his wife and she questioned me on why I hadn't bothered to come see their new house yet. I was surprised, because I had no idea they'd bought one. And they had the house for months already at that point. Buddy just never told me while we were hanging in the interim. LOL.
It’s funny how men don’t talk about stuff like that. We’ll just casually mention it one day years after the fact, lol.
Right! I had a good buddy break up with his long time girlfriend and a female friend of mine, asked me what happened...and I said "I don't know, I didn't ask" lol
We don’t ask them type questions. If they want us to know, they’ll talk about it.
Such is man law.
Got a similar story. Was visiting a friend, rang the bell, knocked on the door. No one opens. After a few minutes I called him and asked him if he moved. Yep he did move and I was at the wrong house.
But I kept the van tho!
Playing a country song backwards is the most uplifting thing ever where everything returns to its positive stable state.
"so when did you find out you were the best man?"
"Oh yeah he texted me and was like 'you wanna be my best man?' I said 'when?' and he responded 'in three weeks, I think it'll be a black suit, maybe tux'"
I was the best man in my best friend's wedding. The maid of honor gave the first speech, and talked about how she knew right away they were right for each other, because the bride raved about my friend after their first data. I talked about the 4 times she had come up in plans/conversation since they started dating.
Facts. Purdy, “we are absolute bros” but also Purdy, “We haven't really gotten to the details of, 'Hey, how do you feel with this happening?' or whatever. We just stay away from that."
translation: they worked together, they got along, both very churchy... not sure about "absolute bros”; tough to be that when you're competing for same job.
This so good man
From: "It's tough because Trey and I are tight, dude," Purdy said during a recent appearance on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast. "Absolutely, we're boys, and we're bros."
To: "We haven't really gotten to the details of, 'Hey, how do you feel with this happening?' or whatever. We just stay away from that."
Lmao absolute peak male responses almost like it's a Parks & Rec bit.
