This has to be one of the biggest success stories in the history of gaming. The dev made the game by himself on a cheap computer out of his bedroom. (Yeah I know he eventually got outside help with the multiplayer, but for most of the development it was just him.)
He definitely deserves this.
Well deserved
Indeed! What a great game!
I don't understand that game. I'm a middle-aged dude in the IT field, and played FPSs all through school. Farming games with relationship mechanics "are for chicks", right?
Then I bought it after reading all the hype. And found myself grinding fishing at the end of every day to pay for more animals, and passing out in mines gathering ore for sprinklers, and desperate to get that greenhouse before the first winter. I was hooked.
Something about always having just one more simple thing you can do...
Worth every penny.
Stardew Valley somehow manages to be a game thats super cozy and relaxing to just go through day by day without a plan and just do what you want.
And also can be optimised like crazy and hvae every down planned out to the hour, a fully automated farm and have every single relationship perfected.
It also does a good job splitting the difference between those two. No matter where you lie on the spectrum in between the extremes you are likely to find a comfortable spot to sit down.
I last played SV years ago, and there wasn't much automation at all. Did they add more recently? Some stuff got super tedious for farming.
There isn't much like, factorio style automation, but you can make sprinklers and get jumino huts to harvest crops and that kinda thing.
That’s a whole separate thing. There is such a vibrant modding community around this whole game. It’s awesome
You leave Penny out of this!
The game fills the part in my heart, the part that wishes for a simpler life in small community, away from all the industrialization, to enjoy the beauty of nature and the simpler life
It can be as cozy or as hectic as you want it to be. I remember in HS someone playing it without touching the mines nor the fishing mini-game. Meanwhile when I played it, I got 30+ tabs of stardewwiki open, min-maxing every day, and having a plan out for the whole season.
Middle-aged dude in the IT-Field?
Sounds like the target audience
Sounds like RuneScape, I might try it.
The sooner everyone lets go of the idea that certain media or content should not be consumed by one gender because either society or some marketing bureau decided it was for another gender, the happier everyone in the world will be.
I know I'm a man, and I know I fucking love sweet cocktails and The Owl House. That, to me, makes those things manly. Because I like it and I am a man.
Had me in the first half, no gonna lie.
Such a graphically simple game, but such good mechanics and that perfect game play loop which makes you go "hmmm nah I'll stay up for another hour just to finish x"
Congratulation for one of indie title goat that ever released on steam, deserved it.
Recently? How big is your barometer on recently? This game is over 9 years old at this point...
FYI, for those that didn't read the article. The ranking on the article is based off of Top 250 best Steam Games and not SteamDB. Steam Top 250 has its own algorithm in computing their rankings as well as SteamDB's own ranking system so results will definitely differ depending on the source.
Steam Top 250:
SteamDB:
Regardless of the rankings, IMO Stardew Valley is still goated. I have it on both Steam w/ mods and on my Switch for a Vanilla experience.
steamDBs algorithm is more correct since its not weighted and is a true ratio between positive and negative review.
steam250 is weighted towards more reviews. Stardew valley is higher then portal just because it has more reviews.
I thought SteamDB grabs every review, not just your selected language reviews and even CD key reviews (that Steam ignores)
Been playing it a lot recently. Me and my partner have realised it has a lovecraftian feel to it once you consider a few things
Have you ever listened to ConcernedApe talk about the game? You can really feel it was crafted with love so that makes sense.
pretty sure lovecraftian doesnt mean crafted with love
Stardew Valley is the best game I've ever bought for my wife.
I just don't get that game honestly.
I wish I did.
I can see the appeal in this game, and yet it just doesn't click for me. Whenever I played it, after a while I found myself not enjoying it and felt "I'd rather play something else" more and more, and eventually just dropped it.
The game is not shit, it's just not for me.
I was like that too, until I tried it on the steam deck.
I sunk 20-30 hours in about a week and then moved onto other things because first winter is kinda boring. But I might come back at some point.
same it didn't really click with me even tho i like other life sim game (Animal Crossing New Horizon)
My virtual life in stardew valley is better in every single way compared to my actual life
This game is special to me because it brought my love of a farming game with combat to PC. Before it, the only game that fit that niche was Rune Factory on consoles and handheld.
I also credit it to contributing to the rise of cozy games, which have become my favorite genre as I get older.
I just started it again!
What makes this game replayable for you?
I 100%-ed it once, loved it, but can't make myself start over, because I feel everything will be the same?
I only played it once through on switch. Got it on sale for PC and felt like going back through for kicks. Plus my friends kid recently got into pc gaming and this is one of the ones he’s allowed to play.
Gamers: “Concerned Ape was able to build this game in a CAVE, With a box of SCRAPS”
Valve: “well, We’re not Concerned Ape”
Had it in my backlog for years and decided to give it a chance recently on my steam deck and it’s so good. Perfect game for on the go.
I had this game on PS5 and just couldn’t get into it, although I’d played a few similar games and really enjoyed them. I just recently got a steam deck, and picked this up alongside a few others in the summer sale.. something about the comfort and convenience of handheld gaming made this game “click” finally and I’m enjoying it a lot now. I’m just about through my first winter, got a nice little farm developing.. I can’t wait to work my way through the game at my own pace. It’s definitely a slow burner, but every time you play, you discover a few things, work out how things work.. it’s fantastic.
If I had to bet on which game was the highest rated on Steam, I would have said Terraria... and I would have lost.
This game saved me from crippling anxiety and I love it with the force of a thousand exploding suns.
I just really like fishing.
It’s a great game but it’s not better than Portal 2.
If you had the option of playing it in a MacBook air, Nintendo switch or iphone, where'd you play it?
The game is best in handheld form in my opinion, so either phone or switch. But check for differences in the versions, I haven't played those versions.
Both honestly
PS5 also an option
Probably a top 5 game of all time for me. I love it, the kids love it, the replay valley is through the roof. Really exceptional.
I just bought it and experiencing it for the first time.
I have it but I just never dug into it.
I posted a review just a day before. I'd like to believe that I had a hand in this.
Yall, do you recommend the Android version? Never played it but it looks like it would be a good fit for a phone game.
No this is incorrect checked on steamdb and portal 2 is still the highest rated game
They both have their own algorithms
Tried it once and found the walking speed too slow and noped out, lol.
You can get a horse and coffees/espressos which increase your movement speed!
You can download a mod to increase speed to your liking.
This is a lie.
Stardew valley is still behind Valves portal 2.
Portal 2 rating 97.72% out of 436,000 reviews
Stardew Valley rating 97.66% of 899,000 reviews
and yet i have 0 interest in playing that game.
u know what is also a very popular game Candy Crush. another game i dont care about.
just cause its popular with the masses doesnt mean its good.
Or just because a game is good doesn't mean it's for you.
I'm sure you like games that would be uninteresting to me, that doesn't make them bad games.
Comparing it to fucking candy crush...
I can't
Right? The problem with candy crush isn't that it's popular, it's that it's based on a highly predatory business model and is clearly designed as a vehicle for profit first and a game second.
Stardew Valley is about as far from that model as you can possibly get. And it's not like it would have been difficult to add micro transactions and other gacha elements to it, so it was very clearly an intentional choice by concerned ape not to.
Dude hating on stardew valley of all games LOL
Fucking unhinged
I get not liking it but of all games to hate this is a weird one haha literally a passion project made by a single guy.. it doesn’t get much more indie than that.
I have it on Switch and I absolutely love it. It’s probably my most played game of the last two years.
On a similar note: just because you can type out a comment doesn't mean you have more than 2 functioning brain cells.
It's not „highly played”, it's „highly rated”
To make such a dumb statement you either must be intoxicated, real tired, or trolling
It's the opposite. Just because you don't want to play it, doesn't mean it isn't amazing.
It's not my kind of game either, don't get me wrong, but it's still very obvious how well made and appealing it is to so many people.
Hating popular things doesn't make you look cool.
What games do you play or like?
Touch grass
Considering you write like a toddler, you probably wouldn't understand it anyway.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. I got bored playing Red Dead Redemption, it simply wasn't for me. But I known its a good game, it's just not my thing
Look at me, I hate this popular and well loved thing, I’m so cool.
I don't care for this comment so I've downvoted it.
And even though a comment has been downvoted by the masses, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad comment. But this one is. Downright shameful.
just cause its popular with the masses doesnt mean its good.
Have you missed the part where it's literally the highest rated game on the entirety of Steam?
If there's one game in existence which you should never criticise because it's just a really stupid idea it's goddamn Stardew Valley. Literally getting as close to the mythical "perfect game" as possible
Feel free to tell us what you play so we can laugh at you
The fact that an indie game is popular with the masses is a pretty good indication that it's good...Just cause you may not enjoy it doesn't make it a bad game... You just have bad taste.
It's definitely a good game.
It can be casual and yet it can be one of the most demanding, stressful games if you desire.
It's extremely deep and you can spend hours just planning before you try to execute your move
The Valve classic game the headline leaves out is Portal 2
Huh, I would’ve thought it would be HL2
I thought I could have been that or at least the original portal not 2
If I recall correctly Alyx has an higher user score than HL2
I think SV is better than portal 2
There i said it
That's alright
Heck I think Portal 1 is better than Portal 2, I like them both though just really surprised it is the highest is all.
It's like a BotW/TotK situation. I know Portal is superior mechanically but Portal 1 came first and was amazing. Portal 2 didn't add enough for it to eclipse my first experience with Portal 1, even though I adore both games. I also went into Portal 1 completely blind so I had no idea Glados was going to try to kill me halfway through. I thought it was a silly puzzle game with no story and I'll never forget the sinking feeling of being abandoned on the live firing range.
Portal 2 should’ve stayed number one
