When I first became a member of PCMR 4 years ago, I actually thought this was a feature of Steam.

Blue_Bird950

Honestly, automatic updates are such a useful feature that people often forget how annoying it is without them. The only real exception is driver and OS updates, since those can actually hurt performance.

or when programs get worse, which is rare with things like steam but lots get enshittifed or have awful redesigns

Mr_ToDo

There's also the weird ones that have some better and some worse features

Back in the day that meant you'd up or down patch depending on what you wanted(assuming you even knew you had the option anyway)

If you haven't tried one yet, wait until you try a proper OS package manager. One place to update everything about your computer from the operating system to the software you are running. It's a massive productivity booster when you have several dozens of things to keep updated.

No-Advertising-9568

Legacy Update does that for Windows. Took about 2 days to fully update my Win7 Ultimate VM, but it does metric butt loads in s single pass. See Legacy Update 😎

Mr_ToDo

Not having OS and driver updates can also hurt performance though. No real winning there

But yes. Not having to hunt down patches anymore is great, especially for old games who's sites may or may not exist anymore so you have to roll the dice on if you want to trust a third party download to get them. Now if we could only get one service that properly supported using any patch level we wanted without jank that'd be the bees knees

or how annoying it is when they don't work properly, like with firefox's setting

https://preview.redd.it/ntpv6i6m5vbf1.png?width=365&format=png&auto=webp&s=0faf742e2d938e618ee6d4e7f7a970a786d56718

what it actually means by "when firefox is not running" is "when you next launch it, half a second after the window opens"

ZYRANOX

I think that's a great feature. I hate background tasks. I hope all apps only update on launch. If you have even somewhat ok Internet this should be a 5-10 second waiting time. And popouts that say "update and restart app" are even worse I never want to update while using the app.

Steam's no problem for me, discord tho? i mostly use it from the web so every time i open it locally it's like "Updating: downloading update 1 of 11" and it takes forever

alala2010he

You can switch to Dorion, it's basically Discord but lighter on both CPU and RAM, and updates are instantly because it uses the web version of Discord (though the app itself does need updates, but those are optional).

You can get it by pressing win + r, typing "winget install SpikeHD.Dorion", and waiting a bit

Thanks. How to learn such run commands?

alala2010he

I don't really know how to explain it in general, but if you want to learn winget commands, here's a nice resource: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/winget/

If you run into any problems, ChatGPT is pretty great at helping you with this kind of stuff, or you could ask on tech support subreddits specialised in these things.

irasponsibly
Fedora 40 KDE / 6700XT / R5 7600

NB: do not run any commands chatgpt tells you to run unless you know exactly what they're about to do, and do not trust chatgpt to tell you what it does. doing that is a quick way to rm -rf / your machine.

alala2010he

Agreed, but it's usually pretty safe nowadays (I use it daily for over a year and haven't run into problems with its commands), though I often do have a slight understanding of what it's doing (like I know to watch out with any command with rm, mv or cp in it), and the person I recommended it to probably will have too, because I think they'll notice it if instead of winget list --all ChatGPT recommends sudo rm -rf /

I've seen enough threads of "help, Cursor deleted my home directory" to be skeptical. It's a good idea to warn a newcomer (with unknown skill level) that it's dangerous, even if you know the danger well enough to mitigate it.

alala2010he

Even if I didn't know anything, every piece of code ChatGPT gave me so far hasn't been dangerous, and I would be fine if I knew absolutely nothing about how commands work.

Also, Cursor isn't a chat model of itself, and it allows any chat model to modify your system automatically, so it should be pretty obvious that that's a lot less safe than just using a chatbot for guidance. That's why I didn't recommend "just install Cursor with any chatbot and let if modify your system in any way it likes" but "if you can't figure out how to do a certain thing with winget you can ask one of the best chatbots on the planet for free guidance". It's also not like they don't know anything about what they're doing; that's why I also recommended the official winget guide first, and ChatGPT as an alternative so they at least have a slight idea of what commands do.

Mostly issues with watching streams or streaming you also dont get all the discord settings or customizations in web.

Also right clicking stuff is wonky like you cant copy images unless you click first and performance of web is fine in text chat but gets worse in big vc with camera or streams on.

Steam launches much faster if it is properly exited. However no one does that, so it verifies every time. Wouldn't be surprised if your distro on shutdown sends an exit command to steam instead of a force close.

If you have a native Steam package, then Steam just updates whenever you do dnf update or whatever the appropriate one for your distro is.

People keep mixing up that the bottom part of the updater window says "verifying installation". Even when using the beta branch of Steam, an update for every single Steam launch is not normal, or at least not as common. If it's a real update, the window will say so at the bottom.
