this one's funny if you know that steam did basically format hardrives on a botched upgrade under specific conditions for their Linux launcher like 10 years aho
Really? Can you tell me more about it?
U guys r insane haha 😂
steam is so hot that it physically cant be liquid. Mist is liquid that is suspended in the air
Man i haven't seen this in about 15 years.
21 years long service.
Steam's no problem for me, discord tho? i mostly use it from the web so every time i open it locally it's like "Updating: downloading update 1 of 11" and it takes forever
You can switch to Dorion, it's basically Discord but lighter on both CPU and RAM, and updates are instantly because it uses the web version of Discord (though the app itself does need updates, but those are optional).
You can get it by pressing win + r
, typing "winget install SpikeHD.Dorion", and waiting a bit
huh, didn't know about that, thanks mate!
Thanks. How to learn such run commands?
I don't really know how to explain it in general, but if you want to learn winget commands, here's a nice resource: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/package-manager/winget/
If you run into any problems, ChatGPT is pretty great at helping you with this kind of stuff, or you could ask on tech support subreddits specialised in these things.
NB: do not run any commands chatgpt tells you to run unless you know exactly what they're about to do, and do not trust chatgpt to tell you what it does. doing that is a quick way to rm -rf /
your machine.
Agreed, but it's usually pretty safe nowadays (I use it daily for over a year and haven't run into problems with its commands), though I often do have a slight understanding of what it's doing (like I know to watch out with any command with rm, mv or cp in it), and the person I recommended it to probably will have too, because I think they'll notice it if instead of winget list --all
ChatGPT recommends sudo rm -rf /
I've seen enough threads of "help, Cursor deleted my home directory" to be skeptical. It's a good idea to warn a newcomer (with unknown skill level) that it's dangerous, even if you know the danger well enough to mitigate it.
Even if I didn't know anything, every piece of code ChatGPT gave me so far hasn't been dangerous, and I would be fine if I knew absolutely nothing about how commands work.
Also, Cursor isn't a chat model of itself, and it allows any chat model to modify your system automatically, so it should be pretty obvious that that's a lot less safe than just using a chatbot for guidance. That's why I didn't recommend "just install Cursor with any chatbot and let if modify your system in any way it likes" but "if you can't figure out how to do a certain thing with winget you can ask one of the best chatbots on the planet for free guidance". It's also not like they don't know anything about what they're doing; that's why I also recommended the official winget guide first, and ChatGPT as an alternative so they at least have a slight idea of what commands do.
It's just the install instructions from Dorion's git page.
Web discord has really poor performance though, especially for things like streaming.
You miss out on some features though as ur using browser
Can you name a few? To me it seemed like the exact same as the app but with different technical settings (like hardware acceleration and caching)
Mostly issues with watching streams or streaming you also dont get all the discord settings or customizations in web.
Also right clicking stuff is wonky like you cant copy images unless you click first and performance of web is fine in text chat but gets worse in big vc with camera or streams on.
I only use discord through the website and it has so many issues. Mainly that watching a stream is always max volume and the volume slider does absolutely nothing to save your ears. Even muting the stream doesn't work. I reported this bug years ago and they never fixed it

For every update Steam does, Discord does 5-6 times more.
Steam takes like 10 seconds to update, I see no problems
Steam: 10 seconds
All the games in my library: Sir, we need 430GB of updates plz
What is the content of the update?
Library: "uhhh... workshop content changes, they added to their dependencies the following mod... ability to read"
Thanks for playing [GameTitle]!
In this update: - Bug fixes and improvements
Size: 100 GB
Haha 😂😂
🤣👍
You can pause automatic updates, and maybe leave in automatic the current game you're enjoying.
What even changes though.
Discord*
Or play Deadlock and update between each match
Especially if you're on Linux
especially not if you're on Linux, I've never seen this because it's only inside the app store
You can download it from the website what are you on about. Getting it from the appstore is probably a better idea though because if you get it from the website you have to install eery update
Why would you download a random executable from a website on linux when it's on the appstore though.
I went to the official site and downloaded it. Why are you scrutinizing for not using the incredibly slow app store?
I'm not, it's just not what you do tho lol. Best practices help avoid headaches like manual updates or weird prompts or incompatibilities.
4th certainty: Discord needs to check for update
I mean you can just evade taxes, the other two not so easily.
I think the reason it's so common with Steam is because other apps usually hide minor patches in the background, while Steam tells you explicitly
Oh no, the app updates itself so you have less issues and more features, how could they?

No thank me for existing
Not so much Steam, but Discord on the other hand...
I don't get this on linux(native install, not the flatpack), but did for years on Windows. I think it's a bug in the Windows version of Steam.
Steam launches much faster if it is properly exited. However no one does that, so it verifies every time. Wouldn't be surprised if your distro on shutdown sends an exit command to steam instead of a force close.
If you have a native Steam package, then Steam just updates whenever you do dnf update
or whatever the appropriate one for your distro is.
Steam? Try Discord. That thing updates so often that I'm wondering what they do there to warrant such fast update rate.
Thank god that no longer happens for me
just launched steam. took 4 seconds to "updating steam, verifying files"
that 4 seconds is faster than many many apps take to launch,
Steam has updates?
People keep mixing up that the bottom part of the updater window says "verifying installation". Even when using the beta branch of Steam, an update for every single Steam launch is not normal, or at least not as common. If it's a real update, the window will say so at the bottom.
???
I mean obviously it has updates, but it doesn't update that often.
No no, that's Firefox.
I swear it can't fucking let me do anything every morning.
Adobe Fucking Acrobat
If you opt into the beta, you may get updates several times a week that require to restart. I switched back from beta to finalized updates and I only have to update like once a month now
Its uploading your browser history to its -dramatic pause- mainframe! Its all part of the doomsday plot.
Bro launches Steam once a month, I guess.
It's the most developed SAAS service in the world. Yes even more than SAP.
This is true for Discord but not Steam imo
I wouldn't mind it if it actually did a noticeable update but I don't even know whats changed ever.
With as much as Nintendo gets wrong, the best feature of the switch is the "start software" button. It'll let you know about updates but you can play as long as you aren't going online. Holy shit what a difference it makes.
<Kool-Aid man style entry> discord has entered the chat.
Damn... I thought it is only me, due occasional gaming :-)
I never had that issue
Idk what y'all are doing, I only use the Steam Beta version (both on Windows and Linux) and Steam only updates every few days at most.
now i think abt it i havent seen the update window since i got my new pc like 2 years ago
Well, there is a trick for steam. I just never shut it down. I hibernate my PC instead of turning it off, and next time it resumes from the same point where I left off, with steam already running. It only updates on really rare occasions when I do reboot my PC, but that's even not every month.
You spelled Fusion 360 wrong
Maybe it’s different but I love my steamdeck but I swear even on stable channel it updates like 3 times per day.
Discord having multiple updates each day. I went on holiday to turkey (where discord is banned) and brought my laptop with me, where I'd updated everything before i left (including discord because i didnt know it was banned until i went). Came back and discord had 18 updates over the 2 weeks i was away
I use Gentoo Linux so it doesn’t update unless I tell it to
I’m working on some stuff to get around that first one. Stay tuned
Solution is simple. I never close it.
Does it need to update every time you launch it, or do you just leave it running in the background for so long you only restart it when it has an update?
It doesn't need to update. It's just checking for updates.
Forgot steam does this, happy I don't have to deal with it. Now I have compatibility issues instead.
Never needs to update if you never turn it off.
Steam is the only app I allow on startup, updates aren't a problem.
why would you launch it
Is the post talking about Steam itself having to update on every launch or Steam having to update one of the gazillion of games I have installed?
Cuz the former is absolutely not true for me.
But if you’re born in a royal family you could avoid taxes
Discord. Fuck that shit. No i won't let you auto launch
Don't you dare touch our beloved Steam
Discord is so much worse
If only my steam would still launch
More like Discord
Nah, I would say armoury create; every single time I get on to armoury create because of RGB, gpu, mobo... Issues I always have to update like a gazillion services from Asus that helps shit and even less, just to do a 40 min journey to fix the RGB that is still on when I put on sleep mode my PC
I'd rather constant updates than none at all. That's when you should be really concerned lol
Okay, I’m downvoting these from now on. I see them all the time and it’s not true. Mine hardly ever updates.
Why would you close Steam?
TF you talking about kid
I haven't seen a steam update in years. If it's happening, it's instant.
When I first became a member of PCMR 4 years ago, I actually thought this was a feature of Steam.
Honestly, automatic updates are such a useful feature that people often forget how annoying it is without them. The only real exception is driver and OS updates, since those can actually hurt performance.
or when programs get worse, which is rare with things like steam but lots get enshittifed or have awful redesigns
There's also the weird ones that have some better and some worse features
Back in the day that meant you'd up or down patch depending on what you wanted(assuming you even knew you had the option anyway)
What's up patch?
Patch: "Not much. What's up with you?"
Steam did get a lot worse with its new UI update.
If you haven't tried one yet, wait until you try a proper OS package manager. One place to update everything about your computer from the operating system to the software you are running. It's a massive productivity booster when you have several dozens of things to keep updated.
Legacy Update does that for Windows. Took about 2 days to fully update my Win7 Ultimate VM, but it does metric butt loads in s single pass. See Legacy Update 😎
Not having OS and driver updates can also hurt performance though. No real winning there
But yes. Not having to hunt down patches anymore is great, especially for old games who's sites may or may not exist anymore so you have to roll the dice on if you want to trust a third party download to get them. Now if we could only get one service that properly supported using any patch level we wanted without jank that'd be the bees knees
or how annoying it is when they don't work properly, like with firefox's setting
https://preview.redd.it/ntpv6i6m5vbf1.png?width=365&format=png&auto=webp&s=0faf742e2d938e618ee6d4e7f7a970a786d56718
what it actually means by "when firefox is not running" is "when you next launch it, half a second after the window opens"
I think that's a great feature. I hate background tasks. I hope all apps only update on launch. If you have even somewhat ok Internet this should be a 5-10 second waiting time. And popouts that say "update and restart app" are even worse I never want to update while using the app.
It is.
there’s a toggle for “only update on launch.”
