Cat peed on my PC, what to do?

Cat peed on my PC, what to do?
Cat peed on my PC, what to do?

I don't use my PC daily and found out that one of my cats (see second image for reference) peed on it a few days ago. It looks like not much pee got inside, and it's all dry now, but I'm a bit worried to turn it on. The GPU was protected by the heat sink, but the mainboard has a few dried drops on it. What do you think I should do?

  • Turn on the PC and hope for the best
  • Clean the drops off the mainboard with a damp towel

Clean it with IPA. Do not use water. Put it above or next to a radiator if you have one till you know there is no way there is any moisture still in there.

This. Use a LOT of IPA, dry with paper towels to absorb urine mixed with alcohol, then let dry completely. Do this as soon as possible. (And pet the cat afterwards)

If you didn't turn it on, and won't let it sit so long to cause any corrosion, your PC should be fine.

Or just non-vented slot covers.

They're a terrible idea anyway from a dust perspective.

Covers are better cuz they protect all parts of the computer from fluids when not in use. Watched a video from a YouTuber named "Vex" in which he talks about having to deal with Asus warranty due to his cats peeing on his monitor.

Interesting - are you saying they tried to claim on the warranty because their cat peed on the monitor?? That seems... wildly far from anything a warranty should cover, unless it was a product advertising it's water resistance I guess?

"Isopropyl alcohol" is a common way to say it, and 'isopropanol' is another name for it with the suffix '-ol' indicating the compound is an alcohol. So, combining the two into "isopropanol alcohol" is technically redundant to a very niche audience.

It's pedantic, but funny, and that's all they meant

Pee on the cat. Assert dominance. Also disconnect pc from power source (remember you are the only power in your house). Wait an hour (capacitors may still have some charge). Dry out the pee with a damp cloth / tissue. let it dry. Maybe use a hair dryer (don't melt anything though). Wait a day or two, just in case there is still some humidity. Pee on the cat again. Power the pc, turn it on. Take a shit on the cat.

Isopropyl Alcohol would be the way I'd try to clean that up. I imagine it will eliminate any smell of cat piss too. Use a few drops on the board and give it a gentle brush with a soft bristled toothbrush. Leave it to dry and see if the marks remains. I'd do it sooner rather than later though otherwise you might start to see it rust. Then I imagine it will be too late.

Hey, hope you read this. This is not normal behavior for a cat, please hace them checked as this could be a health concern. Cats have few ways to show discomfort as they must not appear vulnerable to "predators". Peeing outside the litterbox is one of the ways.

Reasons your cat might pee somewhere odd:

  • litter box is too dirty

  • the cat is repeatedly harrassed/frightened by something in the environment

  • cat feels ill or is in pain

  • cat feels directly insulted (seriously, did you roughly push the cat away when it tried to wake you for breakfast? I've seen this happen)

  • cat feels neglected (also seriously, it might have beef because op's spending too much time with the pc. My cat feels similarly about my TV)

Thank you for your concern! They receive regular check-ups and are in good health. We adopted them when they were two years old through an animal protection program, as their previous owner was no longer able to care for them and labelled them as “too difficult” cats. Unfortunately due to mistreatment during that time, they are left with anxiety and a strong sensitivity to changes in routine. Something as simple as getting up earlier in the morning or working longer hours can throw them off.

That said, since they came to live with us two years ago, they’ve made very good progress. We’ve learned to manage and live with occasional accidents like this one :)

Clean it with 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol (commonly abbreviated as IPA). Don't use a brush if you can help it. What you do is put it into a squirt bottle and then spritz it. Have it angled vertically so it flushes down. Put some paper towels or shop towels at the bottom of the case to catch the excess. After you've done that to thoroughly flush it out?

You then need to dry it. Have a fan blow on it for a few hours, then let it sit at least overnight. If you have no fan or way to blow air on it. Give it 2-3 days without use.

I would also recommend taking a lint free cloth with IPA to wipe off the back plate on the graphics card. After the IPA dries fully smell at it to see if you can smell any cat urine. If you can? You'll want to remove the back plate and do a flushing spray like you did for the motherboard. Let it dry, and then re-attach the back plate.

Dude, rub a piece of very thin cloth or paper with isopropyl alcohol on the affected areas, then dry it gently using another piece of cloth of paper. After the fact, just dust it with any kind of duster you have (just make sure to disconnect it from any power source for some minutes before doing it, in order to avoid a short circuit while dusting).

After the alcohol dries, which takes a few seconds, and the interior is free of cat hair and dust, you should be good to go. Don't leave it on the sun and don't wash it with water.

BlckMlr

Let it dry out and then get some of those blue paper shop towels or a small ( coffee filters works too) dab some 98% isopropyl alcohol and wipe it with that to sterilize it and no other liquids is like the cat pee is on it. And you won't be smelling it as you turn it on through your fans.

Be gentle with the wiping making sure you don't tear off any capacitors.

apachelives

Workshop. Disassembly and clean (also to make sure you don't find it elsewhere).

By clean we would be spraying on alcohol (spray bottle), letting it sit for a minute, and then blasting it with compressed air (air compressor), repeat until it looks brand new, zero contact/abrasive etc.

How does a computer get drunk? It takes Screenshots!

Take it apart removing the motherboard and using 99% (or better) isopropyl alcohol with cotton swabs is your best bet. If you need to do this, it's best to fully remove the motherboard from the case and components before cleaning.

Though alcohol evaporates quickly, make sure to give more than enough time for everything to dry off completely before plugging it back in.

Have done this myself with many boards before we had a ultra sound cleaner for them. *Keep in mind Ultra sound cleaners have some limitations and you should never use it on motherboards that have loose capacitors/ connections or with a battery installed( have to remove it first). Bad results can happen when you don't confirm the above.

Well first you should probably stress test it. See what kind of heat it can handle. I would avoid letting it get above 100C as it may cause permanent damage. You may want to then quickly liquid cool it. As much liquid as possible. Make sure you've run as much power through it as it can handle, though.

Once you're done torturing the cat for it's insolence (please don't, I'm not being for realises), you should spritz the MB with some iso alcohol and wipe the affected area of the motherboard. It will probably be no big deal based on what's visble there.

Microfiber cloth, rubbing alcohol. Disconnect the computer plug from the wall, hold the power for 10 secs to discharge any remaining electrical current left in the circuitry.

Fold the cloth, spray some of the alcohol on one side, leave the other dry, do slow, deliberate wipes across the surface, then use the dry side to wipe out the rest. Keep it at room temp for 24 hours to dry completely before turning on. I did this with a friend’s computer, worked like a charm.

Now I am not recommending this but here is what I did when I poured a whole coffee in my laptop.

I then submerged the entire board in a tray of isopropyl alcohol and let all the grime, coffee, dust dissolve away. I then let it dry for a couple of hours, put it back together, good as new. I'm still using it 2 years later, I had poured a whole coffee literally into it.

Step 1: gently spank that pussy cat Step 2: use isopropyl alcohol with soft tissue paper. Step 3: let it dry. Step 4:turn on mobo If it blasts 💥 Step 5: spank that pussy cat again and remind yourself to search and lock your room for saboteurs before using a open test bench or cabinet.

It's not your PC anymore. Now your cat's property. What you're gonna want to do is buy another PC.

My void did a similar thing to mine about 6 months back.

It went on the top of the case. Luckily, it's a dual chamber case (011d mini) so it didn't go down the mobo side, only on the power supply side. Again, luckily not in the power supply but, all over it and the top fan.

As others have said, patience, isopropyl alcohol, cottontips, and paper towels on the case itself are all I used. Get as much of it as you can.

It doesn't matter how thorough you are. It will smell faintly for a while also when you 1st turn it on. It does go away after a day or so. Depending if you got it all. If the component warms up, and it's on it. It will continue to stink.

Yeah, it sucks. Fully disassembling a pc that stinks of cat piss is freakin gross.

Wow; so let me preface this by saying do as I say not as I do.

Everyone is correct. Running alcohol preferably atleast 90% and let it completely dry.

What I did: I didn’t have my computer even plugged in, woke up in a fib (heart palpitations) after staying at gfs house. Picked up my pc to find out a cat peed on it. Drove from her house to the hospital and was admitted in the hospital. Computer sat in my car for 3 days in summer while I was in the hospital. Went home plugged it in and never cleaned it… never had an issue (that was roughly 9 years ago)

Clean its littler box more than once a month.

If the cat pees often where it shouldn't, I would bring it to the vet ASAP. They may have a problem such as kidney stones or something.

For the computer, I am not sure. I wish you good luck.
