i play pokerogue alot and it pains me when i use chinchou and phantump and they evolve (its for gameplay purposes [the evos are stronger]). chinchou and phantump are some of my favourite pokemon and i have nothing against the evos (lanturn's a bit generic) but i prefer the prevos so much more.

As someone whose favorite pokemon is Piplup, I get that. I do love prinplup and empoleon because they were my first starter pokemon but Piplup is just so sweet and squishy! Not a thought behind those eyes! It needs to stay a baby forever.
Yeah Piplup was my first 4th gen starter, I tried to like Empoleon so hard, but I just couldn't. It feels so stiff and rigid somehow? It's not bad per se... Just multiple things about the design just seem kind of off and awkward, Idk... Nowadays I just go with Torterra.
I think Sealeo still cute, I do prefer Spheal he's so cuteee

This is it for me. I still use Crabominable when I can on a trick room team, but it’s such a downgrade aesthetically. Unfortunately they nailed the coconut crab/yeti crab fusion, it’s actually a clever and thoughtful design. Still pretty ugly though.

I am aware yeti crabs are a thing, but why did a yeti crab theme entail a Dumb And Dumber haircut, horrifying paw-hand-claw abominations where the palms fold out, a repugnant hillbilly mixed with the Ice King from Adventure Time for a face, the addition of a purple bra, and the COMPLETE OVERWRITE of the boxing theme?

Goomy is a weird choice for me. Goodra’s fine and I like it, but I like other Pokemon better. But once I see a Goomy I must catch it.

Goomy kinda gets the Dragonite treatment. Goodra is at least somewhat consistent with the rest of the line. Dragonite looks like he should evolve from a completely different pokemon than Dragonair. You go from an adorable and elegant wyrm, to Barney the dinosaur
I really want a wyvern split evo for the Dratini line tho. A gorgeous creature taking the design element of Dragonair's little wing-ear thingies and expanding on that. Maybe making them out of clouds? Put some Mega-Ampharos vibes in there with the flood of floof. A brilliant indigo wyrm weaving through the skyline with a collar of clouds and wings the size of a storm front.
I wish a Mega Dragonite could carry that theme

I don't mind Prinplup but I feel this exact way about Dartrix and Crocalor. LOVE the starters you pick, LOVE the final forms, hate going through that mid phase

Almost every starter has an awkward middle stage.
Counter argument: In the not-awkward category we have Ivysaur, Wartortle, Quilava, Bayleef, Marshtomp, Grovyle, Monferno, Grotle, Servine, Dewott (my GOAT), Pignite, Frogadier, Braixen, Quilladin, Torracat, Thwackey, Raboot, Crocalor
In the awkward category we have Chameleon, Croconaw, Combusken, Prinplup, Dartrix, Brionne, Drizzile, Floragato, and Quaxwell.
That’s 18-9 in favour of not awkward.

OMG same I liked Torracat but I didn’t pick Litten when I saw the final evo, Ik people are gonna say it’s good competitively but idc about that. It turns into a man wrestler cat. I find Incineroar humorous now, saying it’s savage. Definitely my least favorite final evo of the Alola trio for me personally.
I use incineroar in doubles but man I hate that thing, its one of the most ugly looking thing Pokémon ever made, atleast bruxish is supposed to be ugly looking on purpose, what is incineroar's excuse for being ugly looking cat wrestler, I love machamp and lucario even though they look quite humanoid but I just can't with incineroar.
I'm very tired of the humanoid starter evolutions. Nothing worse than picking a cute little fox, only to get halfway through the game and go "ew, I'm playing furry bait."
Mine stayed the whole Sun journey as a eviolite torracat. Only let it evolve after beating chanpion
Skiploom.
Losing the flower and ears was a huge downgrade upon evolving into Jumpluff.
I understand WHY they did it since it's a dandelion's life span. But what if the middle form was jumpluff and the third was skiploom but with more flowers? As if the puff seeded and grew?
This is the first one I've seen where I completely agree. Skiploom is a perfect pokemon and legitimately might be my favorite gen 2 pokemon. Jumpluff is a B tier pokemon and just kind of fine though and loses all the best parts of skiploom.
Rhydon -> rhypherior.
Its so fucking ugly
Rhydon is up there on the list of a candidates for the platonic form of Pokémon. It’s a monster with some animal inspiration and elemental influence. Later gens steered designs more towards Pokémon as characters and not as creatures.
It is literally the first Pokemon ever designed so in essence, it is more Pokemon than any other Pokemon.

ok I thought I didn't have an answer but it's this. If I ever used Rhydon in a playthrough I'd honestly just eviolite it. it bothers me to have non-evolved Pokemon but eviolite Rhydon is strong enough to justify it and Rhyperior is so awful
Rhydon seriously got done dirty by that evo. To be honest, all many of the new Gen IV evolutions of Gen I pokemon were ugly af possibly except for Electivire.

Magmortar should've never happened, or at the very least not like that. Electivire takes aspects of its pre evo and improves on them, or at the very least stays in touch with them. Magmortar is just a fat pink man with cannons.

Magnezone and Tangrowth both got some flack when gen 4 released. Maybe the opinion turned on Magnezone, but there are still many who prefer Magneton's design direction.

Rhyperior's one and only service to the franchise is allowing the use of Eviolite on Rhydon.

fletchinder. one of my favorite pokemon ever. i know talonflame is beloved but i really think its probably my least fav regional bird as someone whose fav pokemon tend to be those birds.
i also like corvisquire more than corviknight but corviknight is still properly badass
I realized recently what bothers me about Talonflame so much even though I think hawks are super cool - the art makes it look like it's just flying around or hovering with its legs sticking out and that's so silly
I don't know if it actually does that, never seen the gen 6 anime, but it looks so awkward the way its drawn. the legs should be tucked up under it. instead they just make it look like it's leaning forward over oversized gray pants and it's so distracting from the rest of the design

I actually kept my Togetic unevolved during my entire SS playthrough because I didn’t even want to look at a togekiss.
I actually felt that way about Togepi. I first saw it on the anime and then got Gold version, and I got kind of attached to the lil egg! When mine evolved during my first playthrough, it took me some time to warm up to it.
Today I'm fine with all three of them, though I don't think Togetic or Togekiss lives up to Togepi.
I like togekiss. But I do admit it is very very different from Togetic

Honestly, Psyduck. Especially the shiny. Not only do I think Golduck has a worse design, but when shiny, it doesn't look much different from the base form, while the Psyduck gains this nice blue color. I wish they would have reversed their colors. I know old shinies weren't really chosen for the most part, but they've done changes in the past, like Charizard going from purple to black. I'd love to see them do something like that for Golduck.
Hisuian Sneasel to Sneasler. I hate how uncanny Sneasler is, the entire design makes me so uncomfortable.

Torracat. They massacred it with Inciniroar. Both Torracats from my Sun/Ultra Sun playthroughs are level 100 unevolved I hate Inciniroar that much.
Wooloo. Like most people, I fell in love with Wooloo when it was revealed. When Wooloo evolved into Dubwool I was so disappointed.

Crabrawler. I really enjoyed picking him up in Gen 7. I really hated having to wait to evolve him and did not like crabominable design at all. That little crab was such a solid pickup too.

Honchkrow was this for me back when Gen 4 came out.
I’ve grown to like Honchkrow in the intervening 18 years, but I have always loved Murkrow for its “tricksy witch bird” aesthetic and was wildly disappointed when its evolution turned out to just be “mob boss”.
