For those who grew up with power rangers and returned to it later, which seasons are much better than you remember. I haven’t made my way through every single one, but here’s a few that stood out to me.

Zeo:

I hated it as a kid. Still not my favorite, but appreciate it for how good it is. There’s story arc and character growth. And thinking back, the main reason I hated it was because I was mad that it wasn’t Mighty Morphin.

Movie (2017):

Still not my favorite, but I appreciate it way more now. I watched it for the first time in years and I see there was plenty of good there. The two biggest complaints I have are:

  1. You could cut 20-30 minutes out of the movie and it would probably be much easier to sit through.

  2. For a movie that seems to be relying on nostalgia to get people in the seats they went out of their way to be as different from OG power rangers as possible. Different for the sake of different just to show how different we are. Honestly, if we hypothetically give this movie 3 stars (out of ten) then I think all you’d have to do to lift it up to 7 stars would be to change the names. If it was Robert, Marcus, and Jennifer instead of Jason, Billy, and Kimberly I think it would’ve been so much easier to swallow.

Mystic Force:

I think the thing that made this bad for me was just that I was outgrowing power rangers. But I sat to watch one episode and next thing I know I’m halfway through the season. I definitely appreciate this one much more as an adult.

I liked Mystic Force; and I was an adult by the time that came out.

Listening to the Zeo theme song for the first time as a kid was an out of body experience 😮‍💨

The greatest part about Zeo was they really fleshed out all the characters especially the newer 3 who had 0 fleshed out stories in mmpr. They really got to shine.

Zeo was the perfect new start to the now established format. After the original and long standing
formula we had since the start of the franchise, it was everything a new start ought to be.
Enough of the familiar to keep it grounded and relatable for those already along for the ride, while also being like a breath of fresh air bringing some new life and vitality into the experience.
Watching the opening and hearing the theme for the very first time was the perfect statement of what was coming, the same but different, replacing what came before and had been there since the very beginning, and then expanding it and taking it somewhere new!

True. One of the reasons why I like Zeo.

Ironically it was the movie 2017 made me want go back and watch power rangers from the beginning I hated the movie it sucks it was good to see Amy and JDF in the movie.

Ninja storm going back to watch that wasn't the same energy I got as a kid like happy to see it same with Dino thunder and SPD it was more like ok ill watch some episodes.

Im just glad I got back into power rangers back late 2023 watched it from the beginning MMPR-RPM plus I watched the movies 1995 MMPR and Turbo movie. I now have a new top 10 Rangers shows i like and like a top 5 rangers shows i hate.

Same for me. After watching the 2017 movie, I rewatched the whole Zordon era. I still can't stand Turbo and the fact they changed the whole team after one third of Turbo. But "In Space" is pure epicness.

Facts I mean turbo movie was ok but first half of the show ok after the switch i didnt like it anymore and in space saved it my #1 favorite Ranger show

I haven't seen the Turbo movie, but not because I didn't want to but because I just missed out on it when it was in cinemas back i the day and then I kinda forgot that it existed. 😓

I still think Mystic force is bad but I think 2017's biggest problem was that it was trying to serve two masters , as an adult I appreciate the movie trying to give the Rangers more complexity but I can also seem how kids would find most of the movie pretty dull.

Zeo is peak. The Gold Ranger plot was botched, but it really is a great season.

I’d say the Disney era in general. I think, like the OP, I had really aged out of the series by then. I mean, I guess I technically did by S3. But by the Disney era, I was in college and it just seemed like generic, mediocre stuff being pumped out. I think it was partly because I missed the somewhat serialized nature of the Zordon era. So i sort of stopped watching regularly during this time, catching episodes here and there. It wasn’t until the show was all on Netflix and I binged it that I grew to appreciate a lot of what that era did. There was some seasons I liked more than others. Operation Overdrive being a terrible one. But for the most part, I ended up enjoying a good portion of that era. Jungle Fury rose up to be one of my top 5 favorite seasons.

Samurai. Regardless of its flaws I still think it was pretty good. I prefer Samurai over Megaforce anyday.

I'm actually having the opposite effect. Currently on a rewatch of Lightspeed Rescue(my personal favorite Sban season) and I was kimd of shocked how much I didn't care for In Space or Lost Galaxy anymore. Luckily, LSR is still good so far

Zeo holds up, especially as a successor series to MMPR. The transition from the Dinozord powers to the Ninja powers was messy, but from the moment I heard the barest hint of the Zeo theme, I was hooked. It felt new and exciting, and more or less delivered on that promise.

The 2017 movie missed so many marks for me, far beyond those that could be explained away by nostalgia for the original series:

  • It is 2 hours. We don't get any Power Ranger-ing until the 3/4 of the way through, and then it's 20 minutes of a chopped up fight with Putties, and whatever the hell that Zord/Megazord fight with 'Goldar' was. Even for an origin story, it was needlessly slow and the payoff was lacking.
  • The unnecessary redesigning of every aspect of the Rangers, Zordon, Alpha, all the way down to the Power Coins, the lack of unique weapons, the over-redesigned Zords, and the Megazord. It was mostly awful to look at. Goldar being a literal hunk of gold given humanoid form is an extreme disservice to Goldar. It felt like they only wanted the name and the property, but not all of the 'baggage' of being a series for kids.
  • It is too serious for its own good. It didn't need to be entirely kid-friendly, but the foundations of the series were serious-ish subjects tenuously balanced against, if we're being honest, campy humor. It takes up as serious, turns up the dial to dark, and substitutes the campy humor with efforts to be quippy and joke-y that do not make sense tonally.
  • The characters are poorly developed and not entirely sympathetic.
    • During the final fight, Kimberly spins a couple of Putties off of her Zord, and one of them falls onto the car of the girls who cut her out. And she says, "That's what you get." Why? How is Kimberly justified in this? SHE was the mean girl, she did the mean thing. And made no amends, No apology. She, as far as we know, spread a naked photo of her friend around school.
    • Jason is, apparently, a career screwup. "This was supposed to be your season" but also "Just when I think you've done the dumbest thing you can possibly do, you find something even dumber and you do it." And there's no real foundation for WHY he does these things, no mention of something that would possibly warrant bad behavior in spite of ability or talent otherwise. He's just a f*ck-up.
  • Krispy Kreme. Now I know gratuitous product placement isn't new, but Krispy Kreme being central to the plot was a swing and a miss for the sake of comedy.
  • No Bulk and Skull.

I always liked Zeo. Theme song was badass and the zords were all cool.

Mystic Force was great, but I still don't like Nick.

The movie was average at best. I don't hate it,but it wasn't good

Honestly. MOST Post MMPR series were good. Genwunners just couldn't get over their Ducklet imprinting of MMPR and give them a chance.

I never understood the dislike of Zeo. It is definitely one of my favorite seasons. I love the suits, the Zords, and even the Machine Empire. The Gold Ranger was the coolest ranger IMO I dressed as him for Halloween like 2-3 years in a row. I was probably the perfect age when it came out and I had some heavy nostalgia, but man I loved that season.

In 2020, during the early months of the pandemic, I did a Power Rangers watch of Samurai, Super Samurai, and Megaforce, since they were the only shows from the Neo Saban Era I hadn't completely seen. While I have always enjoyed the Samurai seasons, I have to admit that Megaforce is better than I remember. I didn't get into Megaforce when it first aired in 2013, but watching the whole thing seven years later changed my mind on it. Sure, it's not perfect, but it does have its good moments.

I liked Zeo even as a kid. Came out before my time, but had VHS tapes. Mystic Force I didn't like as much as Dino Thunder or SPD, but as I got older...I like it even less. The 2017 movie ironically I think did the power ranger stuff bad, but everything else good. It's sucks because I actually did like the actors and how they built off each other. yet at the same time, despite it doing the power ranger stuff not that great, I would have been far more interested in the sequel to see how they adapted into the role.

Stop trying to make the 2017 film this underrated thing when it was the exact opposite of that

Ranger Operator Series Green

At the time, I remember thinking it was okay, but with the caveat that we all expected - or at least knew they had planned for - there to be a sequel that would give more. Some of the design decisions were flat out bad, but naratively it reminds me of a lot of the introduction 2-parters, where they would sometimes go the whole first episode without morphing. They work because you get the more later, that never happened with the 2017 movie and its worse for it

The movie was ass. No one is arguing that. I'm just saying that looking at it through fresh eyes I see the potential it had. It COULD have been a good movie if it had been handled better.

It's slightly less painful than watching overdrive.
