He was written cool and aloof. Later they made him funny and dumber. There are a few good brother scenes with David too. He played a good big brother.
The had to give him more dialogue and it just made his character weird.
You mean when he almost beat him up for hanging out with Becky? Or was it when he was competing for Traci Lords?
Oh man, I know they wrote two different Beckys but it is still weird that this Becky dressed like this and worked at Bunz/Hooters. Other Becky would NEVER. I always felt this was too far off from any version of Becky.
I never cared for the second Becky 🤣 she was so selfish and always ran out of the room, and way too different than original Becky
Plus no chemistry between second Becky and mark.
Becky's face when he said that. She tried so hard not to bust out laughing.
Mark was dumb since the first episode nope, That was just Darlene being Darlene when she calls ol stupid, zippy and the 2+2 plus question, but mark wasn’t always an idiot like some say they just like using the first interaction between him and Darlene as a example to say he was always stupid
If someone came up to me and said “what’s two plus two” I would also say “what?”. The “what” wasn’t “what IS two plus two”. The “what” was more like “wtf”.
Exactly, like wtf
Exactly!
I’ll never forget get Mark’s sad BINGO moment. He was so endearing during the later seasons. It’s interesting how they developed him tho, given that his mom was absent and abusive. You could tell that while David endured a lot of his mom’s BS that Mark probably took the brunt of her abuse and had no coping mechanisms. Idk, he is one of my fave characters. Even at his “worst” he was great.
Darlene's surprise was the best, "Wait a minute, did he just say something clever?"
My guess is they didn’t intend to have him around a ton. He was meant to be a bad boy. Once Lecy decided to go to college, he became a good vehicle to explain her absence. My guess is, they realized that it started to become too adult heavy. At that time most really revolved around kids somehow. So they decided to bring Becky back with a new person and he was then part of that package again. This is all conjecture, but I often wonder about how much they changed him from a bad boy to an oaf.
I always took it as he became an adult and just grew out of the Bad Boy phase like most people do. They always eluded to him being dumb, Darlene was usually the one to point it out. Darlene threw the 2+2 at him right away on their 1st date. And then when Becky wanted Darlene to lie for her so she could go see him she says 'you remember Mark' and Darlene says 'from down the street?' and Becky says 'no the one I went out with' and Darlene says 'oh the stupid one'. Then when they break up later and he sends Becky flowers Darlene again says 'alright, ol stupids coming back'.
Pretty sure that you're not wrong. It's reasonable to assume that they recast Becky to get Glenn Quinn back
Instead of bringing her back they could have increased DJ’s presence instead of leaving him like a side story.
This is like the only time he said something clever.
It was worth it for the DJ sexual maturity episode where Dan and Fred are using euphemisms to hear Mark hilariously not get it and yell "No Dan the kid's getting erections!"
I love when he partners up with DJ
They needed to bring (new) Becky and Mark back into the fold to fill out the roster since Darlene wasn't going to be available as much.
Mark's initial characterisation didn't fit as well into ongoing week-by-week plots. THey made him dumber and more comedic in order to have ready-made easy jokes to fall back on.
He was a badass then they started leaning into him being dumb af and losing his luster. I guess it’s to show that there was more to his character than surface characteristics
I’m sorry, Dan Mrs. Connor sucks!
“Again, not her but I’ll be sure to tell her how you feel” ☠️
“Wait, I got you. You’re glad to be rid of her. Eh, me too. She’s a mean ol’ bat. You can do way better than her.” 😂
Hands down my favorite Mark scene!
