Messi/Ronaldo just raised the bar, people essentially have different expectations now

Well Messi's best ever year is 2012, when he was 25.

Ronaldo's best ever year is 2013-14 when he was 27-28.

Zidane didn't win ballon d'or until he was 26.

Maradona wasn't the consensus best player in the world until he was 26.

peaking at 25-30 is normal lol.

Benzema had his best ever season at 33 y/o.

Messi was 24 for half of 2012 tbf but I personally don't have 2012 as his best atleast not season wise 14/15 I number one for me but you can argue different seasons from his early 20s till his 30s.

Messi's best years in my opinion were

2012 - 25

2015 - 28

2019 - 32

2011 - 24

2016 - 29

2018 - 31

2017 - 30

2010 - 23

2021 - 34

2009 - 22

Messi’s ability to take on players on demand was way better prior to his 2013 injury. He was unstoppable without being fouled all game.

In 2011, minus the Copa Del Rey final he just dominated most teams.

It was clearly his best season w.r.t individually impacting the bigger games, hence would rate that as #1, even though later on he became more complete.

The ability to 1 v 3 or 4 consistently and efficiently is what sets that season apart.

Sometimes I watch a random highlights videos and man... it's fucking insane how easy he would go through whole ass defenses. Crazy he lost that and became an even better player.

Eh not really, their primes began in their early/mid 20s.

Ashamed_Form8372

Nope they were hyped to hell and were amazing in early 20s but if you check Ronaldo peak from 2015-18 he was late 20s to early 30s when he was champions league 3 times a row. As far as Messi he really had two primes 2012 and 2019. Tbf Messi been consistent his whole career till psg

MalIntenet

Ronaldo was more successful 2015-2018 but he was a better player from 2010-2014

Post 2015 his numbers dropped off, he was experiencing longer goal droughts, and his agility declined due to his knee injury

Ashamed_Form8372

If only Ronaldo didn’t transition to the poacher role post Madrid career he would be looked at better player than he is now. But when Ronaldo joined Madrid he was already 24. And by 2012 which was also his “peaks” he would have already been 26 entering his late 20s so still match peaking late 20s

Maleficent_Resolve44
:Queens_Park_Rangers:

If you look at the best ever version of Ronaldo, it was in 2012 or 2013. He was 27 and 28 then. So yeah he did peak in his late 20s yes. But I don't think including the early 30s works. 2015-18 Ronaldo was a worse player overall than 2008-11.

weegee19
:Manchester_United:

Wrong. It's widely accepted that CR7's best version as a player was during his 20s, his time as a flashy goalscorer with every trick in the book was between 2007-2012. How old are you?

Messi already won four Ballon d'Ors by the age of 25 lmao, his prime began since arguably 2008.

100%, Messi was a one-man army that season. Like you say, it felt like he could do anything, and then it simultaneously felt like he was doing everything.

If anyone else on the pitch was on the receiving of that through pass at the end of the first leg against you lot rather than Dembele, I think it would've been just a step too far to mount a comeback. Yeah, yeah, I know, we don't know how it would've played out in reality, but I genuinely think that Dembele miss provided the faintest glimmer of hope.

Which, honestly, is a shame most of all because Messi and that Barça side could've torn that Spurs team to shreds in the final. That would've been a fun watch.

So much of PSG's goodness is underpinned by his quality. His technical skill, pace and press are all crucial to Enrique's gameplan. PSG might do well to sell Ramos given how small the market for decent 9s currently is, and buy themselves another total forward who's not a 9 but could be molded into something similar to what Dembélé has been doing.

Look, the small midfielders with slick on-the-ball, amazing retention and vision who control the flow of games are my favorite profiles in football, so i've been watching PSG and Barca like a mfer for those two players. There really isn't that much between them, yes i'd give a marginal edge for intrinsic quality to Pedri, but Viti edges it for winning everything for both club and country. Leading your teams to trophies and glory has always mattered to BD'Or rankings.

Barca fans overrating their players again. The only player you have that is as good as you lot think they are is Yamal. Raphina and Pedri are brilliant, but to act like Pedri is the best player in the world this season is madness.

Rickcampbell98
:Aston_Villa:

Honestly pedri has been barcas most consistent player and as much as they wank yamal many of them wouldn't be mad if someone said pedri had a better season. Personally for me he was their best player last season, so if you think yamal was up there then I think it can't be madness to put pedri up there.

RyanLikesyoface
:England:

Yamal doesn't deserve the Balon D'or. Never said that, just that he's the only that deserves the hype he gets from Barca fans. Pedri had a great season, but both Raphina and Yamal were better, ofc I didn't watch every la liga game just the el classicos and their CL games so I can't speak for the rest of it, but in the games that mattered Yamal and Raphina were the best.

Despite that, no one at Barca deserves the BalonD'or this year. Cubarci is overrated as well. I dont think Pedri is better than Yamal, but even if you are of that opinion Yamal deserves more hype considering how outrageously good he is for his age.

Rickcampbell98
:Aston_Villa:

I do watch barca regularly and that's probably why we have differing opinions, pedri was better in la liga than yamal and raphinha for me. I said what I said because barca fans hype yamal as the best player in the world so if you think thats justified then in my opinion Pedri is certainly up there and so is raphinha.

For me Pedri is the best midfielder out there, he's a special player and my favourite player to watch in Europe, kinda fills the void iniesta left when he left Europe.

RyanLikesyoface
:England:

I like Pedri a lot but it's the Xavi & Iniesta comparisons for me, he's not even close to that. Also the reason Yamal deserves his hype is because he's 17 and already a top 5 winger in the world.

asmodeuscarthii

Ad hominem attacks only go so far. I personally don’t think Dembele was even PSG’s best player, Vintinha and Hakimi probably hold that mantle. Trophies does not equal class and Pedri has shown above Vitinha this year and every year previously. Sorry but I’m sure you will be happy with Vitinha as your candidate while I’m happy with mine. I’m not saying Pedri should win Balon D’or. But I’m not naive enough to start overhyping players over what has been shown.

Vitinha can still win Ballon Dor and I would still consider Pedri a better center mid.

RyanLikesyoface

There was no ad hominem whatsoever. We'll have to disagree on Pedri being better than Vitinha, this year Vitinha has been much better, that may not be the case next year or in the future but he was the better player this year.

Messi in 2010/11 (his peak in terms of goal contributions) had 80 goal contributions in 4579 minutes, or a G/A every 57.2 minutes, Dembele is at a G/A every 66 minutes. Not quite on par with peak Messi but not that far. Nvm his peak is 2012 where he was at a G/A every 49 minutes, still crazy that this is the benchmark you have to compare Dembele to, with Dembele having to be rested against the weaker Ligue 1 opponents due to his injury prone nature.

But that last point is what makes what they did even more impressive, playing all those minutes and maintaining that quality is absurd. He has been really really good though and finally fulfilling the potential that everyone knew he had.

MorbidlyObeseBrit
:Paris_Saint-Germain:

Remove the penalties of Messi/Ronaldo season's since Dembele doesn't take them and I'm pretty sure it's incredibly close. Dembele also contributes immensely in the game, as shown by his FBREF stats which are literally all in the 95th percentile in build-up. And he contributes defensively and presses. He's obviously not half the player either of them were, but if he does win the Ballon D'Or, his season is very respectable and people saying this is a weak Ballon D'Or haven't watched what he does for the team on top of his goal contributions.

Defiant-Traffic5801

Luis Enrique 's genius has been to make Dembele the main man, and a centre forward. All of a sudden everything clicks and instead of being an on/off, peripheral, wasted talent, there he is, always on, delivering almost every time from pressing / interceptions, and big runs to key passes assists and goals. Complete player in attack and defense. He is also an inspiration to massively gifted young forwards (Doue , Barcola) and forms a perfect tandem with Kvaratskhelia. Hats off to the best player from the world's most dominant team since prime Barca.

You can blame Yamal for that.

Imagine Yamal didn't exist or just didn't have the PR he had.

The entire club and fanbase have been lobbying for Yamal to win Ballon d'or over Raphinha.

I dare say its even more normal among Barca fans to favour Pedri before Raphinha as well lol.

Real Madrid fans/club are just as bad. the whole debacle about Vinicius getting "robbed" by Rodri when imo Vini wasn't even Real's best player in 2024. Jude Bellingham was. Jude > Rodri > Vini (imo).

Just like Dembele > Raphinha > Yamal > (a handful of players) > Pedri (imo)

Raphinha is easily Barcelona's best player this season but it seems among fans its:

75% Yamal this

15% Pedri that

10% Raphinha

numbers pulled out of my ass but I really don't like how Raphinha isn't getting enough love form his club and its fans.

And still the balon dor debate will revolve around Messi/Cr7/Haaland/Kdb/Rodri/Vini jr/Bruno Fernandes etc 😤😤😤 . It's a f*cking joke!!!!

CR7 prime was def not at united he was amazing there but not his prime. We can’t even measure Messi to other player as he literally won bdo across 3 decades. Both Messi and Ronaldo peak powers were 2016-2020. Messi we can’t even measure extend to 2022. If being flashy is considered a metric for being in your prime then Neymar would be considered the best player ever or Ronaldinho and that’s clearly not the case

Man. Were you watching football 2010-15? It's impossible to look at 2018 Ronaldo and think he peaked there compared to 5yrs before. He was far more complete before he turned 30. Messi aged a little better but even he was a much better player before 30 too. Look at the pace he used to have back then.

Pace isn’t everything tho imo the best Ronaldo I’ve watched and I’ve watch him since 2010 was 2016. But there is a case 2013 was his peak year tho
