Man his Portugal teammates, the last guys to celebrate with him in football. Must've crushed them

I'm glad that whoever wins the final on Sunday some of his teammates will be able to dedicate the win to him

yup, that had to hit different. End of an era for all of them.

Shout out to Courtois for going over and giving him a pat on the back right after. Speaks volumes to be down 4-0 and on the brink of elimination, and immediately think to go over and support the guy who just scored on you.

Love seeing these tributes, wish they never had to though.

First time I saw it, it hurt. Every time I see it since it turns more and more into just remembering what a baller he was, and how much his teammates must have agreed

I’m hoping that the whole squad doesn’t do it after their first goal this coming season, I don’t think I would be able to watch the rest of the game

Genuine question (don't bury me pls) : his celebration looks like he was miming playing a video game? What's the link with Diogo Jota?

E- thanks everyone who answered, very much appreciated :)

Destroyer_of_Sorrow

Jota used to be an avid FIFA gamer, who also won the FIFA 20 invitational tournament. I think he was the World top 1 at certain point in time in FIFA (i might be mis remembering it). One of his on field goal celebration was sitting down on the pitch and mimicking playing on controller. Ramos just imitated that as a show of respect to Jota

RIP Diogo. gonna miss you

He was genuinely one of the best fifa players in the world, beating pros on the regular. A legend on the sticks and on the field

Jota was ridiculously good at Fifa. He would slap up mans on fifa the night before, then score for Liverpool on the weekend

Also anytime the FIFA player ratings came out he would be the ones to give the ratings out to his teammates. I think last year it was he and Konate. Theres a video on LFC’s YouTube channel. It was delightful then and I’m sure it’d be bittersweet now.

Here’s the link

You’re right, but the crucial context in relation to the original question is also that Jota himself did this celebration a good few times as well

Along with what others have said, I remember the match thread or prematch thread for the first game I'm aware that he did this celebration there were rumors that he had been in a fifa online tournament that morning and had to forfeit to get to the actual PL game with Liverpool on time. Then he scored a worldie where he dribbled past everyone like it was as easy as in the video game and did this celebration.

So it seemed like a cheeky acknowledgement to the people he was playing in the tournament too. That context always made it even better for me.

The players as individuals, maybe. Their style and quality of play sure. Their coach, definitely. But behind that is oil money. A fuckton of it too. From the perspective of the club, all of this is hardly built, it's mostly just bought.
