How do you think the amish communities throughout America handled the virus? Do you think they put up a fight? Or got mostly wiped out.
Would be a cool tales episode
I be thinking bout mfs w braces n shit like that 🤣
Pray you find a dentist. Though one of my brother’s psycho friends claims to have ripped out a guy’s braces with a pair of pliers when he didn’t pay the money he owed her.
My brother ripped his own braces off with pliers in our garage.
Have you ever seen Amish men raise a barn? They would have walls built in no time.
Then the first one dies inside the wall.... about to put their pacifism to the test.
I've used there horse powered saws to cut wood before. It's not that fast. Ijs.
They would have handled it just like everyone else: poorly. Amish already don’t believe in modern medicine and rarely use hospital services unless there’s a very dire emergency, and they’re widely unvaccinated (so any other sort of normal communicable disease outbreak would be especially dangerous), AND they’re by definition pacifists-they’d be in trouble when facing raider groups.
If communities wouldn’t get overrun with walkers, other people would certainly be a problem, though being more rural could help for a bit, though their communities still aren’t exactly fortified or incredibly isolated. They’re definitely not as off the grid as people would expect, and they’d be super impacted by a shutdown in the supply chain and energy grid like the rest of us.
If an Amish community broke down and survivors got separated/ spread out they’d be useful additions to other groups. Must have a bunch of good unique knowledge tucked away
I don't know much about how the Amish view possessions and other related topics, but do you think they send a religious elder to a sick member? Or think it is some type of Godly punishment for when the walkers and other threats eventually make their way to them?
They would mostly just need to survive the initial outbreak, which they likely could because they are more isolated, even if it's not entirely cut-off from the rest of the world, they are more isolated than the average person.
Knowing the Amish from my area, the majority of them would likely house and support many of their "English" neighbors or former Amish, which would provide extra guns and protection. The Amish would be less impacted by the outbreak because they are already mostly self-sufficient, they go to our grocery stores, but they could survive still without it. They already don't rely on electricity, so that isn't going to be a loss for them.
They already have order in their communities with routine and collective effort, that puts them at another advantage over the normal Joe. They are masters at craftsmanship and building, so if an outbreak started, they are more than capable of building a fortified wall/fence
I think where most of it would get complicated is that there is so many different factions of the Amish, the ones who are part of the Old Order might fall the quickest because of their dogmatic beliefs and refusal from outside help. So, I could some of their communities thriving, others would be wiped out with the quickness.
Raiders, like you pointed out, would be a massive problem, but the ones who bring in their English neighbors would have a solid foundation to start on. The threat of humans wouldn't be any different for them than it would you or me. Not every Amish person is unarmed, either.
My biggest hang-up with their long-term survival is how their religion ends up adapting to the new world, I feel like it could easily turn into a terrifying cult. They may not defend themselves, either, which is why it would be important for them to accept outside help right away. They have food, animals, resources, shelter, in exchange for protection.
I could also point out many of them are already disillusioned with their church, so if pushed to extremes, many of them would likely start defending themselves and families and start abandoning methods that will get them killed.
I know there’s definitely at the least one Amish community deep in the wilderness with a fortified base thriving
Hard to find an Amish person who isn't good with an axe, a scythe, a butcher knife, or a fireplace poker. I think they'd do well, especially if the women switched to pants or those modest wide legged riding pants for women. They all wear sensible shoes, too. And they wouldn't piss away the first year foraging for dented cans, they'd already be growing and preserving food in a lower population density area.
And I second the other poster's comment about applying barn raising skills to building walls.
Most people are surprised to hear the Amish also use guns for hunting. They wouldn't likely shoot a human but if they can see a zombie as a non-human threat they'll shoot it. Human threats though... Not sure how they'd handle that.
This is where Z Nation comes in
I think they all survived
Or a sequel to the Weird AL video.
The more moderate Amish would probably be alright. The more Orthodox probably would not.
The Quakers are done for in the first couple weeks. ;p
they probably did as about as well as Herchel's farm did. They would have had more community but they lack the outside communication to survive longer than a few months without reaching out for guns and ammo
why would that be a cool episode???? talk about boring as shit
You lack creativity and imagination
Why did I read this in Gustavo Fring's voice?
That was actually my intention
Then, you have done well.
.....now that you brought it up, you just KNOW there was at least one Amish warrior out there, probably killed a thousand Walkers by hand all over Lancaster...
All over intercourse
Lancaster is too touristy, they're getting soft. 🤣
