See, I don't think it is the actors who require being perfectly groomed. An actor will pretty much do whatever is required for the role when it comes to stuff like that.
I believe that all these show runners do it to keep the women attractive to the male audience. It is the same for Game of Thrones, Vikings, The last Kingdom- all of them!
This is why I loved the show 1883. The women have body hair as they would have had in those days.
I'm sure that plays a factor... but I also don't see it landing well with the female actors if someone told them they had to stop shaving their armpits and legs and stop plucking their eyebrows and stop washing their hair.

Talk about no period stains on pants? It would take a couple of hours after death for the menstrual cycle to stop. So if you had a female walker who was on her period and say, didn't get a chance to put a tampon, in, or was wearing one for too long, they would bleed into their pants. Not to mention how hard it would be to get menstrual products in general during the apocalypse; considering they're a really good thing to grab when prepping. Even as a man, on a medical standpoint.

It's distracting because it stands out so much. Also in Dead City everything looks so fake like a stage play. I know they have a budget and limitations but it looks "fake dirty" and it's jarring. Daryl's show looks great and I love the sets. I think that Chunnel scene with the fungus was really cool and reminded me of Far Cry 3.

Hell in season 2 i kept noticing how clean the cars were and it bugged me a lot. I assume they couldn't get the rentals too dirty due to budget reasons but they were always super clean. My fiance's car is dirtier NOW (tbf he works on a train yard lol)
I remember when people noticed some yards had cut grass while others were overgrown. On The Walking Dead after show one of the producers said they asked locals not to cut their grass but couldn't force them not to. I didn't realize they filmed in neighborhoods people actually lived at IRL. I believe it was season 2 when they were out looking for Sophia.

Some people naturally have whiter teeth just by genetics. I've had family who smoke and almost never brush their teeth but they have perfectly white and straight teeth, so that one I can accept for a few characters.

And its not hard for makeup department to make people look like they have gross teeth. All the walkers have gnarly teeth. Let the humans too

The only thing that would save their teeth is the lack of processed sugar. A lot of priates had bad teeth from the sugar in the alcohol and poor diet.
So if survivors are a diet of hunted meat and veg/fruit they grew plus a few cans of whatever they could find then a few would have decent teeth.
Look at skulls from the 1800's and before. The rich usually had horrible teeth because they are a lot of sugar and bad teeth was a sign of wealth.
Without it humans are fine without brushing our teeth as often and a lot of the harder food we eat would help get rid of plaque build up.
Only reason I know all of this is I was super into Fallout for years and I was curious how bad peoples teeth would realistically be š my autism decided which random thing it wants to study
But a good bit of people would have half decent-ish teeth. Just yellow. But anyone living off processed food they find and drinking a lot will have horrible teeth.
Everyone's breath will stink a LOT tho from any bacteria. But toothpaste might be worth finding just to keep dental hygiene up since a bad tooth infection could kill you and bam. Walker time.

I often see this criticism of media but i dont agree with it. The truth is you see the show in your reality, not theirs. In their reality someone smelling bad isnt a thing since they are used to it. Someones hair being bad does not mean much. Rosita is still attractive to Abraham even if she is nasty, dirty, smells bad.
If the show did the same it would struggle to attract you as a viewer. So they have to adapt some elements to your reality as well.

Itās not like everything disappeared in the world and they never get ANY down time or bits of peace, especially when more times than not they are in a community of some sort. Unlike The Last of Us where everyone is looking FRESH fresh, they got like 50 pairs of crisp clean clothes the entire time theyāre adventuring cross country.
Yeah but without proper running water or time why would you bother shaving. Especially since razor cuts are common and in a world where small infections can kill you, why risk a razor cut.
Its why amputees can't shave the part that goes into their prosthetic. Those small cuts are pockets for infections to grow. All the sweat and gunk can cause you to get seriously hurt.
More times than not they do have running water? Besides the very beginning of the show when theyāre surviving in the woods. Even then, they have that whole lake where they wash laundry and what not. Itās not entirely impossible they also washed themselves up, and maybe even shaved a little here and there. You donāt need running water, stagnant works fine too. Pretty sure razor nicks/burns were the least of their worries, nor being amputees in need of sheathing their lost appendage. When theyāre escaping from the CDC (their first source of running water since the outbreak) they find themselves heading to Hershelās very quickly. (Another running water spot) After the farm they end up finding the prison in like what, a day? ((Yet another running water hole)) since youāre barely at the prison I wonāt spoil anymore. Another factor, running water isnāt necessary for shaving, people in the 1800ās and even earlier on were doing it. Allās you really need is a little bowl of water to clean off your razor, and something to make a nice smooth lather over ya hairs and there youāve got a clean shave. Maybe the women in TWD made sugar wax? Itās fairly easy to make and use.

I think you are just confused thanks to big soap convincing everyone that we are filthy ugly smelly disgusting monsters without their products when in reality all it takes is some soap which isnt even hard to make they do hunt and can get animal fats for soap. If they had a source of fresh water thats all it takes to stay clean.

Bro, when I was married I found shaving my legs to be one of the most onerous tasks. I can't even fathom a reality in which I no longer have to shave my legs but continue to do so under extremely trying and life-threatening circumstances.
These people were lucky when they found running water and could sit still for a couple of days. Getting clean would be a priority. Shaving would not be.

In The Walking Dead universe, a literal survival situation, there is no way any of the main female characters would bother shaving. There is no way that any of them would have made themselves vulnerable enough to get that done while keeping an ear out for a walker attack, or an attack from bands of roving humans, for that matter.
Once they were in a secure location like the prison or alexandria, sure, maybe.
