Jon Bernthal is a fucking juggernaut of an actor. Every role he’s in he gives 110% and fucking SENDS it. He’s also got this very specific and unique brand of captivating charisma that snares you in every time

I think this relationship really drives down the inhumane, harrowing, nature of the apocalypse and exactly what it will do to people beyond eating them alive.
Other than Sofia, maybe early days you could say Aimee, but we weren’t as attached to those two. Sofia was terrible because of what she was, not who she was to the audience. Leaving Jim by the tree as there was nothing to be done, this really drives home the dire choices that need to be made. Dale whilst sad, was old and the level of connection we feel between the characters as an audience not quite there yet.
In my mind Shane serves as the first big loss, and true example of how the apocalypse can turn an otherwise principled and heroic man, bad. Rick has to kill his partner and life long best friend, then the cozy farm vibe is ended abruptly, it really drives the horrific nature of what they are going through home.
Absolutely- It drove home that nowhere is safe anymore, not even out in the sticks nor in your own family ties.
Exactly no where is safe, not even your life long friendship and partner you’d been in literal shoot outs beside in the old world. Really creates that feeling.
ALSO WHY the little family crew they create later is so goddamn vital and hits home for viewers and why it’s so devastating to lose one.
one of the best and most impressive things about the first episode of the 1st series is that in very little time, you feel how strong the relationship is between these 2. Excellent writing and acting

The lineup is a bit over a year and a half into the Apocalypse iirc. That's compared to the 13 years that passes between season 1 episode 1 and where we currently are in TOWL.
For us, the lineup is just a bit past halfway through the story in the main show. For the people currently in the show, however, it's only like 15% of the way through.
For another perspective, season 1 to season 8 accounts for about the same amount of time as season 8 to season 9.

It’s been a long time since I watched TWD but from what I remember I feel like Shane and Rick’s friendship wasn’t really fleshed out if that is the word. i feel like I didn’t get enough to see that they were such great friends. I feel like their relatinship should have been more fleshed out like I don’t know more flasbacks and/or baxkstory. If they were gonna kill of Shane so early as they did and have him completely downfall so early as they did then they should have made season 1 and 2 longer and made it a slow burn downfall. But again that’s just me and my thoughts and I haven’t watched the show in a long time.

There's a fantastic "What If" story where Carl is separated from Lori and Rick from the beginning of the outbreak, only to reunite with the group as a junior Savior during the execution circle scene. It slowly shows other Butterfly effects, Sophia is alive, Shane's alive, etc.

Shane wanting to make Rick kill him then he gets shot and Rick learns Shane's gun was empty. Shane was never gonna murder him but he had completely lost it and wanted to die at the hands of his best friend.
I think that would have been beautiful and given Shane some redemption in death. Just a broken man who in the end wanted to go out on his terms whlist pushing his friend to make the hardest choices.
