Imo I love that we have spin-offs. I haven’t watched dead city or Daryl Dixon but I have watched TOWL and it was great. It’s like DLC on a video game. It’s optional content that just adds on to the story. I love that. I assume a lot of the fans do as well but it’s just the haters who always say “this show still is going on?”. Game of thrones fans don’t complain about house of the dragon, they just enjoy extra content. Doesn’t hurt anyone. 11 seasons + spin offs and games is super healthy for any media imo.
I think the complainers are just louder. If you look at how well TOWL did, then you know many people watched it. People are still interested. Like you said, if you’re no longer interested just don’t watch anymore, but the complainers are still interested. This fandom seems to have a love/hate relationship with the show.
I dont think simply watching something counts. I was part of that statistic, I watched it, took nothing away from it and never thought about it again
You watched six episodes of something you didn’t like? I would never, but I guess people are different.
Fandom feels like an obligation sometimes. If season 1 of the walking dead had the quality of season 8 for example; there would have been no season 2.
Exactly this. Plus, fans wanted to seen Rick’s story end.
Hell, I abhor GoT season 8 but even though I was done by episode 4 I stuck it out just so I could say I finished the series.
Not that unusual. Gotta give it an honest go to have a worthwhile opinion on something imo.
Unless it's like, 50 episodes, fuck that.
Didn’t say it was unusual, just that people are different. It doesn’t take me six hours to figure out whether or not a show is interesting or something I want to finish. If it doesn’t hold my attention, I move on.
People are still interested in good stories, like the CRM story, and in Rick. The problem is that the story of Dead City, in my opinion, is of low quality; as with Daryl Dixon's. Despite that, I don't understand the people who complain about spin offs (I understand that they complain about their level), if you don't want to see it, just don't see it
Because everyone likes different stuff
weak writing should never be applauded lol
Mid spin offs that are optional to watch hurts no one. Not even the main source material. It’s a spin off.
I don’t know how any spin off “hurts anyone “. Not doing spinoffs doesn’t hurt anyone.
Not sure how it would.
There are hundreds of people employed on these shows
I ve never seen before a "spin off" about the protagonist.
They actually wanted to continue past season 11. However, since they lost the lawsuit against Darabont a new season would mean they d have to pay him some money. They didn t want that and so they made the spin offs as continuations. This is why the ending to the main series was so bad. Since it wasn t actually an ending.
Technically it did end lol. U don’t gotta watch the spin offs you can
I mean if you wanna know what happens to Rick, Michonne, Daryl and Carol you kinda do. Otherwise what would be ending? Everyone s just missing or searching for someone lol?
Absolutely degrades the IP, fear, world beyond, dead city, daryl dixon post season 1, even the ones who live, all rushed, poorly written and/or poorly acted and water down and already watered down and oversaturated IP. Treating something as a cash cow offers no respect to the fans or actors, why milk a dead cow without putting any actual quality writing in there?
Honestly there was some great acting in TOWL, mostly Danai. Her scenes just felt so genuine and raw in my opinion.
No question on the acting in towl, but the writing was absolutely rushed, the acting in world beyond and fear s4-8 was terrible, the writing for s2 of daryl Dixon and of dead city was also lacking and just stank of mediocrity
Yeah, honestly. It sucks because a lot of those shows had a good bit of potential if they were just a bit more loved.
Because they've been pretty poor.
Thats fair, I love all media from TWD even the slow parts. Not a lot of people do. Post mainly was targeting the people who keep saying the are dragging it and it should end completely
I agree to an extent. I too, really enjoyed TOWL and rewatch it regularly because I'm Richonne shipper trash, but DD and DC aren't good in my opinion. I wasn't even able to watch s1 of DC through to the end. That show in particular seems like a waste. I do not want to see a redemption arc for Negan. I do not care about this back forth of will Maggie forgive him or not. It seems like a blatant cash grab by the franchise because fans love Negan. Sad part is, I love Negan too (as a villain), but he overstayed his welcome in the flagship series. DD is at least more watchable and an interesting glimpse into how the outbreak affected the rest of the world. But it's not something I'm waiting with bated breath to watch. Especially after they completely ditched important characters to focus on Daryl reuniting with Carol.
IDK, the people who dislike them are at least partially right because they just aren't good as the flagship show. Even the ending of TOWL is a bit cheesy for my taste. The first 4 episodes are amazing, and they really let the romance drive the plot, which was a breath of fresh air in a franchise where that kind of storytelling isn't the norm. But if you're not shipper trash like me, I can see how it's a waste of time.

Yeah a lot of ppl say “it sucks after _” I look at them as NPCs. Don’t form opinions for themselves, I seen someone on tik tok say “it fell off after season 3” 💔. Season 3 is a bottom 5 season

People just don’t realize what they like from the show. I’d be damned if I watched a show for 6 entire seasons then stopped because a certain character died. You mean you watched 6 seasons for 1 character and nothing else? And I love that person but bro really wasn’t even a top 5 character by the time 7x1 came around
The vast majority of people form their opinions on entertainment by personally consuming said entertainment. Dehumanizing them as “npcs” because they have a different opinion on tv, film or games is strange at best.
For me, every spinoff has ended up somewhere between extremely mid and very bad. Fear the walking dead became an embarrassment, tales was laughable, world beyond was corporate “can we appeal to teens with teen characters” put on camera.
It’s fine if they worked for you, but I don’t think anyone can make a reality based argument where a walking dead spin-off was high quality entertainment that deeply added to characters, lore, or the franchise.
I don’t think it’s that it hurts anyone, it’s that they’re not particularly good television to many people
I dislike them because I watched the entire TWD series and there was no conclusion. When you watch an entire show, its reasonable to expect a conclusion to the story, or at least and attempt to conclude the story.
Instead the final episodes felt like a sales pitch for 3 new TV shows.
The spin offs, especially since the main show ended, were simply not as good as the original. That's a difficult thing to do but they seemed to go for bigger with lots of action instead of good writing. We ended up with Daryl and Carol's European Vacation, Maggie Goes to New York, and Rick Kicks Ass With One Hand.
I feel like the time and effort could be put into better things.
I feel like the AMC stuff is done. All the fans want is Rick and Daryl to reunite.
I’d much rather get a culmination to the franchise to fully end it then I’d want an animated TWD show to be greenlit which more closely follows the comics and is made by Skybound. I feel like there’s so much potential in an animated TWD show similar to Invincible.
By continuing the AMC franchise, we will not get the animated TWD show we actually need.
I mean, isn’t this the case for just about every piece of entertainment?
They dont really entertain many people either
This is reddit, where simply avoiding or ignoring something you don't like is not possible.
Yea I’m with you I love all TWD content
I just want more of the universe
Man why don't they just make a TV spin off with Lee and Clementine that would actually be fun to watch
It's the internet. People seems to seek out places to complain rather than compliment literally anything. TV shows are no different. I can understand wanting to vent if you're disappointed, but I love the shows. My least fav was TOWL and I truly believe that's because I hated the character Jadis so much. I fast foward everytime the trash people come on screen. Can't do that with TOWL because she's so integral to the plot.
But I still love parts of the show like apartment episode and Eppie 2 where Michonne meets the wagon train people.
And yeah....as cheesy as it was I loved the very last scene of the show, I needed to see them reunited with their babies. It makes me cry everytime I watch it.
TOWL is the only one I’ve watched and those first 4 episodes were peak TWD. Nat was one of if not the best side character we got in a long long time.
Then those last two episodes happened… as for the other spin offs, I honestly couldn’t care less. And once we finally get the Daryl/Rick reunion I’ll probably be done watching completely because it’s just not worth being invested anymore.
It's fine if the franchise still maintains strong popularity and growth over the years. TWD? It's a shell of its former self, it stopped being big from season 6 onwards. It went on for too long repeating the same cycles over and over, keeping Negan around was the nail in the coffin. The only logical and sensible spinoffs to be made were FWTD which is miles better than TWD especially its later seasons and the one with Rick. The others? Unecessary and just milking a dead cow. The idea to start a large universe, all connected with spin offs instead of just keeping two was STUPID and the lack of quality and popularity wasnt deserving for all the spin offs we have gotten
“I feel like it doesn’t hurt anyone” has got to be the weakest critical take I’ve ever read.
No one in the audience is hurt by the existence of any show.
Quality of writing is uneven at best. It was too with the main series but we got more quality seasons than weaker seasons. Seasons 1-5 of TWD is some of the best tv of all time in my opinion. None of the spinoffs have been able to touch that but it doesn’t mean they are bad.
Ngl im not too fond of the mutant zombies angle. Feels too Z-nation / resident evil
I think it really is just that people are sick of seeing things being turned into franchises with projects that don't reflect the best the original content ever got. Personally, I don't really have an issue with it either. I don't think any of the spin-offs have been a home run and it sucks that the ending of TWD wasn't exactly an ending, but I like that these shows feel pretty low stakes for the most part and I appreciate that we still get to check in with some of the characters a couple times a year. They've been in some people's lives for a long time, and I wouldn't say the writing has butchered their characters (at least not more than Gimple's did), so I think it's nice to get to engage a little bit longer.
If they were to start making more spin-offs after this that don't bring the main cast back together to some extent, or they start doing some kinda "next generation" bullshit, then I'd probably stop watching.
Agreed! Daryl Dixon, esp, is really good. I think the spin offs are better than had the original series continued, or, God forbid, a reboot.
You can dislike whatever you want. They aren't good, but they're more TWD so it's whatever.
Ngl I can straight up watch 5 seasons of Daryl Dixon walking aura farming and call it peak
Because we are in the age of entitlement and hate bonding.
I tried watching episode 1 of Daryl Dixon and it was a snooze fest. I regret wasting my time watching it. So I'm just gonna assume all of the spin offs suck and will no longer be wasting my time on them.
You simply aren’t ready! Daryl Dixon walking is peak
They dont hurt you, if you dont watch them. Its been over 15 years. We want it all wrapped up, and thats not that much to ask for. We used to ask for more, and be excited about it. Everything "extra" they've given us has been mostly shit - not that hard of a concept to grasp. I am still and will forever be a diehard, but let it die a death. No offense to anyone's personal opinion, this is just mine. Long Live Rick Grimes
It's the disappointment. Continuing the stories is arguably a great thing, doing so passingly or poorly is less than satisfying.
It’s a cash grab. I mean it can be average but the only reason is money
It hurt the story.
Except it's more than optional content if you are looking for closure with these core characters...
The only thing these spin offs hurt is the legacy of what were once iconic TV characters. Instead they are now like Greys Anatomy (walking & talking plot devices)
Negan especially has overstayed his welcome, anything iconic about him has disappeared and him using that dumb electric bat just shows how shlocky it has become.
A great story with great characters should have a proper ending, instead we are getting just random side adventures with no end in sight. It's exhausting!
I know people want to see a Rick & Daryl reunion so that may be the final plot thread that would bring it all back together but until then we get cheap TV slop..
I haven’t watched dead city or Daryl Dixon
Why are you judging people for having opinions about something you haven't even watched?
I used to be in the exact same boat as you, but after seeing the quality of these spin-offs, I'm now to the point where I wish we could wrap things up.
because they're not very good and every time a new season comes out it degrades the walking dead further. I mean right now it's a mockery of what it once was, when it comes up in conversations people usually tell me "i didnt know it was still going on". you can't separate the spinoffs, they literally have central characters from the main show in them, they're all the walking dead and they make the quality of it all worse. I've just accepted at this point TWD will continute to become more and more slop until 5 or 10 years from now when amc realizes its not worth it anymore and they hand it over to another studio who will give it a more comic faithful adaptation. until then, it's gonna be a dreadful time
I think the spin offs are all trash. For me TWD ended with S11. But like, feel free to enjoy what you like, doesn't bother me!
Fairs
For me, it feels like they are milking it for all it’s worth and won’t just let the series end. Though I did like the one with Rick and Michonne. They needed a proper ending.
Technically the main show ended, u don’t gotta watch the spin offs. That’s how I look at it. Who am I to get mad at optional content that I ain’t forced to watch.
Yeah people just like to hate honestly, it’s so easy to just say “oh I never watched that I wasn’t interested” but instead many fans get upset and hate on shows even if they haven’t watched them at all.
The spinoffs were just for me I guess AND I LOVE THEM ALL
I get what you’re saying. I’m not necessarily mad at the spin-offs. I just feel like they can weaken the original story, which was so strong to begin with. It doesn’t always feel like they enrich the story, just that they keep dragging it out. Sometimes less is more.
If you compare it to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon works because it’s a prequel that was referenced in the original. It gives us deeper context and world-building. It expands the lore in a meaningful way. It adds weight to things the characters said in GoT, which makes rewatching even richer. That’s the kind of expansion I enjoy, where the new content adds layers, not just extra runtime.
the main show ended in a very unsatisfying way. the viewers want a clear ending but the spinoffs are very weak; two things can be true at the same time
The main show ended the same way as the comics
the comics didn’t leave that many loose ends though. Rick was still alive, so was Michonne, Daryl also left and so did Carol. Maggie was still out there too, and Negan’s story didn’t seem complete. The comic ending was satisfying because the cast of characters that were left didn’t have that much to tie up, they were just living and Carl was actually still alive.
My point that i made that yall so blindly downvoted was that they’re milking the spinoffs as a cash grab because the spinoffs have a weaker story that keeps getting more and more diluted the longer they keep it going
This idea that nobody in the comics had any adventures in 30 years and this is somehow “closure” is silly. That’s not how life works. The apocalypse doesn’t end because they put one annoying lady in jail.
you just massively misinterpreted what i said, i’m not taking this conversation further
It literally was nothing like the comics. What version of the comics did you read?
I feel a proper ending would have been a big reunion with Daryl, Carol etc etc
It could still happen, since they keep finding excuses to keep the story going.
This.
We understood that we had Fear and the webisodes as a way to see what happened in the initial apocalypse and expanded into the virus a bit more.
Now with Dead City, Daryl Dixon, Ones Who Live, its all for greed to continuing the series. I feel its overly expanded as if they're trying to be like Marvel or Star Wars
