Just finished the series. Here are some thoughts from Seasons 9-11.

And why last three seasons? Years ago I was watching the series on the weekly basis. I've stopped at Season 9, during winter break I think. Right now I've returned and in March I started the rewatch. An hour ago I've witnessed Judith and R.J. standing at the walls of Commonwealth, thus ending the series. Here are some thoughts I've been gathering since the beginning of the Season 9:

  • Overall, I think it was a breath of the fresh air. The Saviors War was tiring and episodes were dragged as hell. Season 9 was more of the show we had at the beginning, but improved. Heck, even cinematography improved very much (that shot of the group approaching heads on the spikes? *chef's kiss*);
  • I liked the development of many characters, but especially: Ezekiel, Gabriel and Eugene. I think they ended up as my favourites. That episode, where Gabriel and Aaron get drunk and meet even-more crazed Robert Patrick? Top notch;
  • I liked Yumiko's group at the beginning, I liked Connie's relationship with Daryl, but in the end, I think they were underused. Luke disappeared for a very long time just to return and get killed in the series finale? Come on! I also may be weird for noticing that, but I think Magna was... too modern? Like, her tattoos and clothes. The world ended in 2010 but she felt like somebody from >2017. Just an observation;
  • I don't know how it went down in the comics, but I think the Whisperers were revealed too early. They were cool, menacing and Negan dealing with Alfa was a big surprise, but ending of that arc was... weird;
  • I wish we had more of The Highwaymen;
  • Michonne leaving in the middle of the Whisperers war was dumb as hell;
  • I like that Daryl started smiling! - and I liked his relationship with Leah, shown in that one episode. I really hoped she would return, but... not this way. The whole Reapers arc was so disappointing and unnecessary;
  • I loved Princess. I think she was one of - if not the best - additions to the cast in those last 3 seasons!;
  • That episode with Virgil and Connie in the house? DAMN!!!
  • Now, the Commonwealth. I don't know, but in the last season... Something clearly went off. I don't know if it's because of the COVID or what? Watching this I felt nothing. Not boredom, not annoyance, just NOTHING. I don't know what happened. There were some great scenes but the whole arc was... it just was. I think Hornsby was great villain tho;
  • The ending was a bit... disappointing? I think some seasons finales had better ending, and here we're talking about the whole series. It felt rushed. And by the way, the show was really bad at showing that 50 000 people lived in the Commonwealth, but I think it was the case since Woodbury, then Alexandria, Hilltop etc.;
  • Mercer? My man;
  • I've also noticed, that in Seasons 9-11 they used more original music and that it was more diverse. Hell, even in the intro in Season 11!;
  • I also wish that after the Commonwealth, the group would have to deal with new variants. Not for long, but I think it was severly underdeveloped;
  • I don't know how to feel about Negan. I'm not sure if he redeemed himself in my eyes. I try to get it, but I can't (altough great character, Jeffrey Dean Morgan nailed it, especially at the moments when it was "new" Negan, but 3 seconds later he was switching to the old one);
  • some sidenote to the whole show: I don't know how it looked in the comics, but it's surprising, that there wasn't any big (maybe antagonist) religious group. Considering the end of the world, it would be very fitting. The Reapers had some moments, but... well, I said about the Reapers what I had in mind

This show had many flaws, bad, weird moments. Episodes that made you question why the hell do you even watch it. But everytime it fell, it stood up again. Had so, so, SO MANY great moments, characters, scenes, dialogues. I said that the ending was a bit disappointing, but I shed some tears. What a journey, what a show. I'm sad, and yet I smile. Because I gave the show and myself a chance to finish it. And I don't regret it. AMA if you have any questions, discuss, and comment - I will gladly reply.

I honestly couldn’t agree with you more on pretty much all of it. I finished the series for the first time this year. I’ve seen seasons 1-10 so many times but I had a hard time watching the last one, I don’t think I wanted it to end. I saw the first episode the night it premiered on TV when I was in 7th grade, like 11/12 years old. This shows been a huge part of my life since day one somehow. It scared the absolute shit out of me growing up, but I refused to stop watching it.

I really love that you took the time to put this all into writing too. I’ve been trying so hard to get some friends into this series because nobody I know has watched it or really cares to have conversations about it. I have one friend who’s agreed to watch it with me and learn all the stuff that I’ve learned over the years being into the show. And I’m so excited.

your summary? ✨👌🏻

Touching on the religious group point fear the walking dead season 3 actually started building towards that and if the showrunner wasn’t booted off we’d have had that (and I’m confident it would have been great, season 3 of that show is top tier walking dead universe stuff)
