I think the reason Cotton lashed out at Hank was because hearing Hank say he loved him made Cotton feel overwhelmed with guilt. Deep down, Cotton was hoping Hank would resent him, it would’ve made it easier for Cotton to pass away with the way he treated Hank

Cotton loved Bobby but resented Hank because Bobby was unapologetically himself, while Hank constantly sought his approval, a trait Cotton saw as weakness. Deep down, Cotton may have hated himself, which made Hank’s trying be like him even harder to accept
